    The newest N54 is 14 years old. Yes, if you wish to make a 14-17 year old car with likely around 150k on the clock “reliable”, you’ll need to do some maintenance. I do not recommend just throwing parts at it, though.

      The newest N54 is 8 years old. They also came in the 2016 Z4 sDrive 35i (engine N54B30). They were in production as little as 8 years ago. Some over run made it into early 2017 for a few 7 year old motors.

    So right on. Seen a few of these issues on mine. As well, the issues you describe are consistent with the reports on many BMW fan sites about the n54. However, I believe it's worth making your n54 engine reliable to have one of the best engines of all time. Voted best engine 5 years in a row by International Engine of the Year Awards. Also for 3 years by Ward's Ten Best Engines. The n54 is a very tunable engine as well that can easily make a lot more hp with minor modifications.

      Its the auxiliary belt he's referring to. It can get sucked into the engine through the front crank seal if it breaks but Vargas makes a plate that goes behind the balancing wheel in case that happens. Saved me from destruction when my belt broke

  • @jinayl
    @jinayl 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Short and informative, ty. One info I am yet to find anywhere though: does this list apply to stock or almost stock (say 400 chp) N54's, or mostly (heavily) tuned ones. Asking cuz I'm considering a e92 335i but I certainly don't want to constantly worry about this and that part failing and potentially getting stranded, not to mention the big costs associated with it

    • @AlteredAutomotive
      @AlteredAutomotive  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I’d like to imagine it would be fairly reliable if you kept it on stock/mhd stage 1 (lowest map ~ 330ish whp) regardless you should swap out your spark plugs, coil packs, & charge pipe tuned or not. As for the rest these cars are getting old and there’s a lot of plastic in the bay that is prone to cracking + the engines run HOT and the gaskets aren’t the best material so those are also prone to fail in time as well. Unfortunately the water pump is guaranteed to fail within 70k-100k miles so if you get one around that mileage make sure it’s been replaced. These cars can be hit or miss regardless of all, just make sure that the one you’re looking at has been maintained by the previous owner and all should be well!
      Edit: It never hurts to get a prepurchase inspection done by the BMW dealer if you’re buying 3rd party👍

    • @AlteredAutomotive
      @AlteredAutomotive  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      If you have MHD log a few pulls and check your rail pressure and fuel low pressure sensor, the HPFP should be at least 1800-2000psi and the lpfp shouldn’t be dipping into the mid to low 50s. (Safe values around 2200-2500 for hpfp and 70+ on lpfp under load)
      If your HPFP is showing lower values make sure to check your LPFP first. The LPFP having low pressures could cause the HPFP to drop in pressure and is also the cheaper part! I hope this helps 👍🏻
