Great, with only negative being that playing the 'violoncello' part on keyboards is not quite the same as playing it on guitar - something that made this song very special back in the day.
Now THIS is quite an impressive improv version of one of my favorite DP songs. It almost sounds like a Yes song during that extended middle section (doesn't Steve Morse sound like he's channeling Steve Howe in parts? I do). And the addition of Jon Lord's violin synth work gives this son added color. I'm already liking this song a lot more than the album version (not that the album version is less superior, I just think this version is more appealing to me)!

Saw them play this wonderful song in Detroit, at the Ford Auditorium, the Fireball Tour. Still love that album and especially this song with the guitar doing viola-like sounds. Simple Volume control manipulation with dexterity - and class. Steve Morse's rendition is obviously very different than Ritchie's original, but very cool - more like a shredders version. I still prefer the original, personally - simple, straight forward volume swells.
Live vs recorded? I'll go live when the song is true to the original. I don't go for live songs that digress in no meaningful way which is why Blackmore annoys me.
Satan's name is so very beautiful/stunning as is he, even though The Bible layers him in ominimity (new word), just as music in both the rock and classical genre's, HIS genre's.
Every instrument is symbolic of something, not only in sound, but also in shape and word spelling, and the meanings rotate depending on the song. I am still trying to figure out what the tambourine symbolizes, perhaps=tangerine=orange, and so on. The shape is a circle surrounded by small symbols. One day, I will figure it out in a flash, out of the blue. You must be in a very high realm of the mind to do this. The same goes for translating Caramba TV.

@@tariksba That is EXACTLY my point. Jon L should not be using that thing. It takes away both consistency and spontaneity and the sounds he makes are super horrible, one of the main reasons Ritchie left. JL used it countless times to overdub Ritchie's guitar==refer to MISTREATED!

Just listen to this mighty growling Leslie sound: th-cam.com/video/TvOtEnbdDjc/w-d-xo.html. Only between 1970 and 1973 Jon didn't have Leslies but used Marshall Major amps and cabinets. It wasn't because he or someone else didn't like the Leslie sound. The issue always was that the best sounding Leslies only have 40 Watt tube amps and due to the indirect sound production through the moving rotors (which isn't as effective as speakers pointing directly at the listener) those 40 Watts are really not much. The organ player couldn't be heard when there was a guitar player. Therefore, many people had very expensive modified high-power Leslies back in the 70ies and 80ies. The Marshall Major wasn't the typical guitar amp, it sounded almost fullrange and had tremendous power to offer (200 Watts tube amp). Jon could hear himself and it gave him a very beefy tone. But it also had its limitations which is why he switched back to Leslies after this short period. Don't be fooled, Ritchie Blackmore never left Deep Purple because of Jon Lord!
Brilliant song by Deep Purple, and Ian Gillan is in top form.
And of course, the brilliant Jon Lord was still around.
