Power amp distortion, totally different to preamp distortion plus the Hammond chucks out tons of harmonics, wasn't meant to but it does! :o) Totally know what you mean, just doesn't get old as it was old to start with! LOL

Agree, and on the topic of dueling how about Gillan & Blackmore in Strange Kind Of Woman live - now I tend to fancy myself when it comes to rock music knowledge so if you can tell me of another similar kinda thingy I'd love to know as to me it is totally unique to Gillan & Blackmore or did Plant and Page do it as well...

Steve Morse is not that bad as Ritchie's replacement. I like Ritchie more because, I mean you gotta give more respect to the man who wrote the riffs than one who can replicate them, but he covers most of Ritchie's songs really well. I don't know about Don Airey though, Ritchie Blackmore is a legend as are all Deep Purple members, but Jon Lord was such a unique musician, I think he is irreplaceable. Still Ritchie Blackmore and Brian May still have their acoustic live performances they do today.
But the most talent for a live rock band today(not counting classic bands that still perform) is Muse. Matt Bellamy has a unique vocal style, mixed with some classical piano playing, and kickass guitar riffs(I say riffs because Muse isn't really about solos, they have a few kickass progressive solos, but most of the time its just the vocal melody done on guitar) Chris comes up with some of the most memorable basslines, and he is an excellent backup vocalist. Not to mention he is a one man band, he sings, he plays guitar, keyboard, bass, harmonica and drums. Dominic, doesn't sing, in terms of live performances, he only does the drums but he writes all the synth rhythms they have.
I recommend you look up their song Survival live at Rome Olympic Stadium 2013, or Space Dementia live at Reading Festival 2011

I actually don't know if I agree with that statement. What I WILL agree on is that the Mark II line-up made the best records, and Blackmore's riff-writing was pretty damn integral, on that score. Don't get me wrong, Blackmore is a great guitar player, great tone, etc. But, for my money, both Tommy Bolin and Steve Morse are more impressive players, overall. But, again, from a composing standpoint, Blackmore has the mantle, so to speak; I'd honestly pick him among the five best riff writers in all of rock, and that's a GIGANTIC gift. The other four? Keef (Richards), Page, Iommi, and Hendrix. Gosh, that was surprisingly easy!

Yeah during that time black Americans had already moved on to soul music, motown, etc...and white Americans were either still doing the Elvis style of rock, country or surf rock--so the Brits took old blues music made by older black Americans and flipped it into their own version of blues/rock and it went huge.

They were in the wave of British rock bands that paved the way. Deep Purple, Led Zep and Black Sabbath. Now looked upon as an era that will never happen again, simply because these guys had to learn their instruments. Everyone wants to play in a couple of hours these days. And that's why music like this will never happen again.

Experienced deepest of purple in Greenville memorial auditorium, the biggest little auditorium in the southeast of the USA. It was deep purple, opening for the Uriah Heep tour. Our one of many historical jams!

One of the all-time greatest band line-ups. A bunch of guys who couldn't stand each other made some of the best music in history. One of my favorite bands... ever. Thank you, Deep Purple, for the enjoyment and influence you have given my life, and music!

Really they didn't like each other?

    • @plasticoflamingo2952

@@kellyzang8423 From what I have read, and seen in interviews, it's mainly Gillan's animosity towards Blackmore, and Blackmore's disdain towards Gillan. That always caused friction between them all. They loved playing together, but couldn't stand to be around each other. Probably why they reformed and broke up several times.

I got this album when it was released (I was 13); it was my very first LP. I played it until the grooves wore out, and I know every note of every solo. The studio track is much different, but I LOVE this video, although I must admit that I miss Jon Lord's haunting opening (on a Hammond, no less!!). The lyrics vary a bit too, but I like them better than the studio version.
(Ian hitting the ascending "laaaaaayyyyyzzaaaaayyy" scream is the stuff rock and roll dreams are made of.) thx for post

Saw them live January 1973. Hitchhiked 180 miles to and back. The backup band was pre-Stevie Nick's Fleetwood Mac. One of the great days in my life. Wouldn't cross the street to see any of today's hip hop garbage.
