Talon Pro Ardupilot FPV - Complete Build (includes drone hater at the end)

- This is my third Ardupilot build, this time is a Talon Pro airframe which is made for long-range and FPV flights. This video will show you the process to put it together, the mistakes I did and the maiden flight. Including a Karen (drone hater) at the end of the video.

This project makes use of the most popular autopilot software, Ardupilot, specifically Arduplane firmware which is the one I'm using for this build, installing the firmware using mission planner and using a Matek F405 Wing. Also using a digital airspeed sensor and GPS, the plane is equipped with an FPV camera to allow for OSD visualization and be able to fly via FPV.

@@Youdontwannaknow.. Lithium Ion cells have proven themselves to be the best option in long-range fpv flying for a reson.
Tom didn't get much flight time because he only discharged his cells down to 14.8v total or 3.7v per cell; however lithium ion cells can go as low as 2.5v (!!!). you can't treat a litium polymer and litium ion battery the same, they have different properties and use cases.

That was a fun build! How you integrate all the wiring so cleanly is very satisfying. Also idk how you kept your cool with that crazy lady, I would get boiling mad. Most people would make an entire video of that incident alone, but I'm glad she just went away and it ended safely

Stand your ground friend, we have had local local government try telling us "no photos of township employees" and we basically told them to "pound sound" and they left. We have the federal government writing documents authorizing our flights, but they still complain, so you will too :) great video, looking forward to what you do in the future

I look forward to watching more vids from your talon pro. I've put a few hours on mine now and have it tuned nicely. It really is an excellent plane and well designed, unfortunately just far too expensive. I find it to be very efficient too. I'm cruising at very low amps and seeing better mAh/km numbers compared to my old mini talon

Awesome video and well done analysis. I started during corona when they closed down the gyms and during my short career i aswell had a few unpleasant situations. What i found out is that it never was arduplanes fault. It was just me not being patient enough. Arduplane however has saved me multiple times or protected me from any serious damage. The software is awesome.
I've had some trouble with the gps fix at first and i've lost a single plane because of that. I learned that when i plugin my tablet only the gps and rx get powered up, which improved gps position significantly. When it's disconnected and fired up again by the mainbatt the gps apparently remembers the previous position and has to problems fixing.
Love the airplane and the flying part, but the Song was a bop! 🤍🤍
I only just discovered you channel while looking for my next airframe, after totalling a believer I was planning to use to really push the limits of expresslrs. I was pleasantly surprised to find you are using ELRS yourself haha 💪
A couple tips I have found when flying 1.3 that may help you (feel free to use, or not):
- That supplied Matek 1.3G Y antenna isn't very good. A TrueRC singularity gives much better results on the air side, and coupled with a 1.3G X-air on the ground, you should see 50km+ with good signal
- 1.3G video has an alias close to 2.4G, so running 2.4G ELRS and 1.3G video isn't really a great option. I'd look at either changing video to 5.8 (at the expense of range), or use 900mhz ELRS hardware instead of 2.4.

Wow, glad she wasn't carrying. Nice plane and build. I too am trying 2.4g ELRS on my FPV planes now that it has great Telemetry Yappu and INav LUA scripting. I'm using the Matek 2400-D receivers on elrs 2.0with great range on low power. I also converted an R9M , but haven't gotten telemetry going on it as yet. I would rather stay with the small antennas of 2.4 if possible.
Nice girl :D One day I was flying over a group of people with a 200g flying wing, very slowly. Some Karen asked me "is this fun for you?" and she did it in such a voice that it was obvious she was trying to make me uncomfortable. I just responded with "hell yeah! it sure does!" and that was the end of the discussion. Same when I was flying my 75mm drone around my block. Don't talk to people that yell at you. Let them vent, they seem to need it. Eventually, when they'll get used to you being in the air around them, they'll start appreciating your piloting skills and will learn to live with flying toys around them. At this stage, when I go out flipping around the trees I get kids watching, parents watching, old people smiling... There is rarely a case when someone reacts negatively. Sometimes when I crash onto a tree I get sneers from drunken Karens, but most of the time people are just helping me get my drone on to the ground.
The point being it's new to people, they are afraid, they don't know what the hell is this thing and what it does. They make up stories in their minds and react to them. The best example was not so long ago in Poland where a guy shot down an inspection drone worth over 10k EUR because he thought it was his neighbor watching as he was having sex. People fear what they don't know. Expose them to the new and they will learn to live with it. Don't give up!

You don't need elevator servo out if you already set vtail left & vtail right servo out. Just remove elevator output, and put the servo wire on the vtail left & vtail right on the servo rail FC.

Good stuff, prob the most in depth interesting one I have seen and the directions on the website were great. What is the additional camera footage )second view) from? Did not see another camera in the specs on your website? Still new to drones, I would love to do the FPV on a gas engine model.

Pennsylvania, I had two people say when I’m flying my drones it’s so I can peep into their bedroom windows at Night, and I got some good drones but I don’t have that kind of technology that I can be peeping into bedroom windows from 400 feet when I’m flying at night! FWIW I have never experienced so much drone hostility anywhere quite like I have in Ireland when I go home to visit - even if that lady was not exactly Irish. And that is a pity considering how much open space you have in Ireland. And I plan to do an FPV tour of Ireland soon so I had better get ready for more of this.

Hello, at the end of the video a standard situation is shown that deals with legal issues relating to model flying. Regardless of what it is about - especially personalized recordings - occasionally we model pilots are accused by self-appointed "police officers" of not acting in accordance with the law. Therefore, these people feel compelled to harass us with massive threats or even to commit damage to property or theft of our property!
I am German and have been practicing this hobby at home and abroad since 1970. Unfortunately there were and are such people always and everywhere. Outside of an airfield - and even there - you come across him again and again. Of course, I obey the law and have all the necessary permits with me. However, it should also be borne in mind that the local police patrol, should it be called up or deal with it, usually has no reliable knowledge of the local legal situation. It is therefore always good to be prepared accordingly and to have copies of the most important legal texts with you. This will quickly give you an advantage in the case of local allegations and also the legitimation to take action against these people.
Actually, we all don't want to have any problems and just find some relaxation and joy in peace. In my experience, however, this is only possible if you use all your might to defend yourself against hostility as early as possible at the beginning of a conflict.

Hey, I'm about to start building my Talon, I was planning to use the clear gorilla glue the same as you did. Have you had any issues with that glue not holding the parts together?
It was OK for the build, but roughen the parts a bit for the parts the glue is going to contact to ensure it works better.
You need to do a tutorial in how to set up Ardupilot in the computer from flashing to flying.

Um, from the video it appears that the giant solder blobs on the ground and hot wire coming out of the FC are shorted under the glue blob? No wonder it wasn't working well?
I wonder if that Vtail setting is that way by default to retain some deflection for a combo Yaw and Elevator input.

Great flight. People have been cooped-up in their houses for too long. She does have a point though, as she is a nature-lover and I can imagine the sound of a model plane flying overhead somewhat spooked her. Maybe fly in areas where there are mostly no people with the autonomous drones. Drones freak a lot of people, as they just see it as spying - even though your setup is purely as a hobby, people just won’t get that, as trust has broken down. I can’t even go flying my gliders these days upon the slopes without someone taking an interest. Gone are the days of innocent fun!

She only wanted to talk and argue, she was not interested in anything you had to say. I have had the exact same thing happen to me. I tried to tell them I wasn't shooting video or taking photos of anyone but she kept interrupting me and even getting loud. When I realized she didn't want to listen I stopped explaining and just said "OK" "yeah" and "whatever" and she even threatened to call the police on me. I was hoping she would because I was totally legal and had a right to be there. She didn't call police after all but I wish she would have. Maybe she would have listened to the police, but who knows.
