A simple question: how a bunch of chronical backstabber psycopaths/mass murderers succeded in creating and maintaning an Empire for more than some years? The whole system should've crumbled in months if everyone tried to kill each other, only sheer brutality and ferocity didn't bode well for government (remember how long was the HUNS' empire?)
A very old comment to be sure, but still; The Terrans are supposedly the continuation of the Roman Empire, should it have never fallen. Consider that, before it fell, it lasted a very long time.
I mean they could because translators yada yada, but more likely is that this is an imperialistic authoritarian nation and there is likely only one official language that is allowed (might not be English but translated for our benefit.)
I guess you could call this a "moment of humanity". Noticed how Killey and Owo surmised the situation instantly and was palpably aggravated by the display of empathy exuded by Georgiou. A turning point for the empire.
Even though the Terran Empire runs on fear, the binding force is actually the opposite: loyalty. Since when insecurity is the biggest concern, then life security is the most valuable resource that can be offered. However, this will spawn numerous factions in the regime since whoever can offer security will gain supporters. This is why Philippa forced Michael to kill his supporters; but she couldn't really deny the security that Michael can offer since Michael is still the daughter of Philippa, the next queen. The only solution to that is disavow Miachel's status, which essentially denies all of her resources, but that also means certain death to her since she lose all bargaining power, anyone can kill her without consequence. Basically Philippa took the chance and hoped for the best, this is why she passed Guardian's test: she no longer thinks like a Terran. She become Pragmatism with sympathy, which is more acceptable than Xenophobic racist native Terran, and with great potential to do great things if she goes down a right track.
Although I do enjoy DIS to a certain extent, I always felt DIS characters in prime universe are vastly inferior to old Trek in terms of "dailogue weight". I think it is because they somehow are often given super long lines and deliver them way too fast, making supposedly serious scenes feel casual and unimportant. The DIS mirror universe however seems to be the opposite, just like DS9 they speak slow, and have good use of pauses in between to show that they are really thinking things as they speak.
