  • The SEAB Flipper is a pretty miserable little plastic French almost-car. But it does one very specific thing better than pretty much any other car in the world. Spin!

    It was either Tom or Ray Magliozzi (Car Talk guys) that said, "The French don't copy anyone and nobody copies the French." This is a prime example.

    • @no1DdC
      @no1DdC 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      He's also wrong. The front engine RWD layout? Invented by the French, Renault to be precise. More car related French inventions, in no particular order:
      - Inflatable tires
      - Steering wheel
      - Modern transmission
      - Electric ignition
      - Panhard rod
      - 4-cylinder and V8 engines
      - Catalytic converter
      - Drum brake
      - Clutch
      - Independent suspension
      - Tempered glass
      The first race involving cars was in 1895 in France. Germany is the birthplace of the modern car, but France was the nursery.

    I had a nasty accident, riding pillion, on a wooden go-kart with pivot steering in the mid 80s. We were too old to be riding on such things by 1985, but we did it anyway. We were going really fast down a hill, when the steering suddenly turned 90° and it catapulted us both into the air. Cuts, bruises & and concussion followed. And mud - lots of mud. Pivot steering is lethal!

    I have a swisher ride king lawn mower that is a fwd tricycle and the way the gear box is set up the motor sits in between your legs with a pulley on the top that aligns to the top of a 90 degree gearbox with a chain drive to the wheel that allows the front wheel to turn 360 degrees around, essentially making it the worlds first zero turn (1959). I think it is so cool the French made a car so similar to this

    A while back I saw a TH-cam video with a blue san permis vehicle that was a three-wheeler and the front wheel could turn sideways and it could just about spin around within its own length. The Flipper is a much more extreme version of that idea, though. I’d like to have one but I bet they’re really rare in the US.
