  • This 1975 Acoma Mini Comtesse is part of a category of cars known as “voiture sans permis,” which is French for ‘car without a license.’ Even though you could be a drunk 14-year old and drive this, we sent Jason Torchinsky instead.

      As this car made in France, the speedometer says of course 60 km, not 60 miles. The allowed top-speed with that class of microcars in Europe is 45 km/h, which is around 25 mph.

    • @HesseJamez
      @HesseJamez 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There's no speed limit for microcars, but a speed limit for some kind of driving license and insurance. If the car was faster it was taxed as car, not as scooter, tractor, wheelchair or whatever.

    Actually, "sans permis" still exists! The law has evolved so basically they just have to be extremely light (I think it's 450 or 500kg max) and slow (45 kph max) cars and some other things like having only one gear (plus reverse), etc. So now those are some kind of ridiculous two seaters that makes you go mad when it's in front of you on the road :D

      I hate my country for that (UK)... In school we learn to use cm and mm, but our parents teach us feet and inches, we measure ourselves in feet and inches, weigh ourselves in stones and pounds. use MPH and buy litres but measure in gallons... I'm just glad we don't use Fahrenheit

    • @michaelkennedy8573
      @michaelkennedy8573 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      0 is freezing and 100 is boiling
      Literally

    • @hajjdawood
      @hajjdawood 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The Imperial system is more practica for day to day uses.
      0 = Very Cold
      30 = Cold
      50 = Moderate
      70 = Warm
      100 = Very Hot
      Celcius
      0 = Very Cold
      50 = Extremely Hot
      100 = Dead
      The fact that your thermostats have to use a decimal point really highlight the poor daily relations of the metric system as a whole. Lets say measurements. Using my feet I can tell you with a high degree of accuracy with ZERO tools the area of your room etc. Or my finger to measure inches. Or my hand to measure a cup. Or my step to measure a yard. Yes metric is easier when doing math on paper, but is terrible for daily measurements

    Saw another one of these unlicensed little things in Monterey this year called a SEAB Flipper. Apparently that one had a pedal mechanism for extra power. Very strange little cars.

    Seems like a modern upgraded version could probably be a lot more driveable while remaining within the restrictions. Given the various attempts at ultralight vehicles and pedal cars and modern materials and engine options I think it could be done.

    You totally got it wrong. Think about it. Thins thing was built to take drunk french old men home from the pub at night during raing without getting wet. Imagine that in a small french village or town with narrow old streets and no traffic at all. The suspension though... old people would have to be drunk... to not feel the broken spine....

    if not for the fact it appears to be slower than a moped. This would be very economical and fun. Still wouldn't mind having one, they do look like fun. In the same way a go kart is . And if you put the right go kart motor on that you'd be having a code Brown. Quickly LOL. I used to have a racing go kart that would do something like 60 or 80, no I'm not joking, and it had roughly the same size motor as on this little piece of interesting. I kept thinking to myself what it would be like to drive that vehicle with the motor that's on one of those racing go carts. Would be a interesting experience and you definitely wouldn't have to worry about going uphill.

    Jason, I hope you will forgive me for asking, but how tall are you? Because when I watch you driving some of these micro-cars, the first thought that comes into my head is there is no way I am going to fit into them. Not because I am overly tall or anything (I am about five-eight and change), but because I am fairly broad-shouldered, heavy-built, and cannot imagine sitting in there without getting intimate with the walls.

      More fun on 3! Wind in your hair, up on 2 wheels attempting a curve, just before winging a gendarme! Vive la sport! Twenty years ago in my small provincial French town there appeared for a year or so a pre-war invalid carriage, prob'ly dragged out of a barn after a long sleep. It had a wicker body, single wheel up front, two trailing, with a lever-joystick and a mighty 2-stroke motor, no muffler. I must have been at least 350cc. Jesus H., could it shift up to 50mph plus, with this white knuckled old man clinging to the controls, fly-spotted false teeth gleaming, trailing blue smoke... Driving is for fun, not just going shopping!

    and there are still cars like this available even now in Britain you can buy an axiam coupe s with 4 wheels, heating, a radio/cd all powered by a small diesel engine and can be driven on a learner bike licence with a CBT, even has 2 seats for people who have a full moped licence Still limited to 50Km/h though

  • @behemothokun
    @behemothokun 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    60mph? I think this is Km/h, which is realistic on a 50cc moped, most can drive a bit faster then that, but this "car" is probably heavier and less aerodynamic, so I guess 50Km/h is probably a realistic max.
