      I have had cracked retainers and that was in covid time, dentist wasnt taking appointments..
      what i actually did is glue it, use something strong like krazy glue..
      first, clean your retainers and dry it with cold setting on hair dryer
      second, put a drop of krazy glue on a toothpick, grab your retainers and slightly bend to split where the crack is, then use the toothpick to apply a tiny bit of that krazy glue.
      third, hold the retainers for a while so it can dry, then when its dry enough use the hair dryer again on cold setting and blow it a bit, then set it aside for a while before cleaning it and putting it back in your mouth..
      this method works best for splits, if its actually a hole crack then its hard to deal with, make sure you dont bite down your retainers or aligners when they are in your mouth, use chewies if you feel its loose.
      note: avoid applying the glue directly from the glue container or there might be excess and it will make the retainer look weird on that spot, worse case scenario if you spill inside you might feel that thing when you put it back.

    Judging by all the comments of kids scared of telling their parents that their retainers cracked, it's clear to me that these kids nor their parents were properly educated on the risks and costs of orthodontic treatment like braces and retainers. More orthodontists should educate their patients on the treatment they are offering and what it will mean. This includes telling patients that retainers often crack and that they would need to be replaced and the cost of the replacement and how frequently they need to be replaced or how often they get cracked.
    Informed patients would then be able to make the informed decision on whether to go ahead with braces or not, and perhaps would decide that it isn't worth the long-term cost and hassle. I suspect some orthodontists don't take the time to sit down and go over all these details with their patients, due to time constraints, effort, and the financial disincentive of losing potential patients.

    • @GluckOrthodontics
      @GluckOrthodontics  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you so much for the comment! You bring up an extremely important point - informed consent! That's one of the pillars of any medical or dental treatment (along with diagnosis, proper treatment planning, patient cooperation, etc). Most orthodontists provide written informed consent documentation (for educational and legal purposes) along with written instructions for all types of treatment, and retainer wear and care. We really appreciate your comment and hope you have a wonderful day!

    I have a crack where there are molars. Like on top where food is grinded. It cracked cuz I like to bite down my retainer to put it on but I hit it in a wrong angle. It’s about half an inch long I’m not sure if I should still wear it. It’s almost unnoticeable but I’m worried about gunk getting up there.

  • @andrew2272kag

    I have a split in my removable essix retainer, very small, top plate rear left molar, bisects the edge of the plate up to the molar but doesn't go into the molar section itself.
    I will be making an appointment to get a replacement retainer, however due to the age I will have to get new moulds done.
    I am concerned as to whether the split is enough for the retainer not to function properly anymore, and for the molar to shift, meaning that when the mould is done the positioning will be wrong.

In our practice if the crack is due to a quality issue with the material, and it's only been 8 months since the retainer was made, we'd likely do a no-charge replacement. We'd suggest calling the office to make an appointment once they reopen to see about having a replacement made. Have a great week!

    If you don’t have any cleaning crystal packets left that you should’ve gotten with your Invisalign’s vivera retainer(s), I used a natural active charcoal toothpaste with a manual toothbrush. Sometimes I just use my oral b vitality electric brush also.
    My bottom one cracked (actually I had three-I got them after doing the trays about three/four years ago) and they all cracked in a spot where I have no tooth(molar). I am supposed to get a bridge there but pfft can’t afford that. And probably can’t afford a replacement either.
    I did have to get a new top one because a couple summers ago because they put a crown in my ine tooth and the ok’d retainer in top didn’t fit so at least they offered that one for free because I wasn’t aware of this at the time I got the dang crown.
    So be aware of that also if u get new dental work after your Invisalign treatment. 😊

      Thanks for the comment! There are definitely recommended cleaning materials based on the type of plastic from which the retainer is made. We suggest asking your orthodontist what they recommend, because if you use a different product, they may not be willing to cover the cost of a repair/replacement if you were using a different material.

    I have an active plastic retainer (don't know what kind but it's the one made of plastic that goes over your mouth) and one of the springs just went completely out of whack so that it's literally impossible to put in, is there any way to fix it myself? Or make a new one? It's 2am and if I take it out, come tomorrow I'll both need painkillers that I don't have and if I have to take it back to the orthodontist, I might face missing an exam I won't get another chance of retaking, so this is pretty much my only option. What should I do?

    Hello, my retainer cracked in the rear molars. I live in NJ, but my orthodontist is in NYC. Because there's a pandemic, I feel that it's too dangerous to make an appointment. Unfortunately, I don't remember having a digital model, rather I had a rubber-like mold to find the imprint of my teeth. That being said, is there anything I can do to fix the retainer?

    • @GluckOrthodontics
      @GluckOrthodontics  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gotcha. Great question! There may be a local orthodontist in NJ who could see you to make a new retainer? Or, if the crack isn't too deep, you can likely keep wearing the retainer until you can get back to your orthodontist in NYC. Just be very careful removing it so that you do not make the crack bigger.
