DSB Class MO (II) from Heljan - Unboxing, Fixing, Weathering

  • For almost half a century the class MO rail-car was one of the most hard-working pieces of rolling stock with the Danish State Railways (DSB). There were five different series with the first units delivered in 1935 and the last ones in the late 1950s. All in all 139 units were made and the last MO was taken out of regular service in 1982. The class MO rail-car had a diesel-electric transmission system where the main power sources were two 6-cylinder Frichs diesel engines producing 500 HP in total. The diesel engines were then connected to two electric traction motors. This arrangement made the rail-cars rather heavy weighing in at 62 tonnes. To carry all this weight most of the variants had one bogie with two axles carrying the electric motor and one bogie with three axles for the diesel engines. Nevertheless, the maximum speed was 120 km/h which was quite respectable for its day. The Class MO series II had room for 52 passengers. There was a luggage area placed between the engine and the passenger compartment, thereby reducing the inconvenience of the engine noise. The class MO was operated from one of the two driver's cabs located in both ends and the rail-cars could be used either as single-, double or even triple units. The class MO proved to be very flexible hauling literally any type of train. A very common assignment was passenger trains but also small freight trains or mixed trains can be seen in this video. This particular model is of one of the 10 cars of the class MO series II from 1935. It is different from later variants because it has a riveted body and roof where later series were welded. The model of MO 562 is from Heljan (45551) and came out in 2021. I like the model very much, especially the riveted details and the wonderful chaotic roof with all its pipes and radiators. However, the model has a very irritating flaw since one of the wheel-sets of the three axle bogie is not placed correctly. The problem can be solved with a little patience as shown in the video. Please visit my blog at www.Sundborg.Wordpress.com for more on my plans for a layout set in 1950s Denmark.
