  • My 2007 FJ Cruiser had a noise in the dash on the passenger side. Checked and found it was one of the 3 motor damper actuators. This is a video of the cause, replacement and testing including a tear down of the actuator to find the cause.
    This may also affect 4 runners and tacoma's as well as other vehicles that use this actuator and fan system. The noise is usually heard on the passenger side near the radio

    Finally!!!! I know where that daammm noise is coming from! I have an 07 FJ Cruiser and its been making that noise for several months now. I’ve been looking for weeks and found nothing online, but this video 100% helpful and on the spot!

    I have an 07 FJ and had this exact same problem for the past 5 yrs. Only difference with mine is it does the noise on front vent mode (the most left option) and the noise goes away if i put it on other modes. Thank you so much for sharing this!

    Thank you for this video. It helped me immensely. I cheated by not taking the whole bracket off, and only taking the two upper bolts off. Then I took all of the small bolts that hold the actuator to the bracket, and wiggled it out. I only did it this way because I'm older, and my hands are not as flexible as they used to be. The mount, on the other hand, is fairly flexible. If you do it my way, the hardest part was the tiny bottom screw for the actuator. Thank you again.

    When doing the blend door actuator for the vents (upper passenger side), if you put the system on recirculate, then turn the key off, that roundish recirc door moves out of the way, then you can easily get to the lower screw. A magnetized phillips screw driver helps too.
    I got the replacement, GPD 1712327, from rockauto delivered to my door in 3 days for $33.
    I'll cleanup the contact inside the original and keep it for a spare.

    Hey man, thanks for making the video. My FJA was doing the same thing. It’s a 2010. I noticed this weird noise when I would turn it off like it was cracking nuts inside or something behind the dash. I will order whatever that thing is that you bought. Keep them coming. You got a subscriber.

    For those wondering, The actuator is a Mode Door Actuator GPD 1712327 from Rock auto for the '07

    • @MehdiNY
      @MehdiNY 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      So all the 3 motor damper actuators are GPD 1712327? I went to Autozone for the same issue and they recommended this one: MT18596 but not sure if this will work.

    • @gaving4359
      @gaving4359  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm pretty sure they are different, thus the part number difference. The 18596 you got is for the blower housing inlet door (the one on the right above the blower motor). The blend door is 18605. I would find out which one is faulty and ask to see a diagram to pick the right one out. The mode door is the upper one on the left side, that is the one I got.

    Just replaced the same servo as yours on my 08 fj. I ended up just unscrewing one screw on the metal bracket instead of taking all 3 off. Unscrewed the small screws that mount to the back of the servo and bent the metal bracket a bit to pull the servo out. Also didn’t drill any holes in the white plastic. Took the cabin filter out and made sure the recirculating vent was open so I could put my hands in their to manipulate the small screws with a small screw driver. Your video really helped a lot!

    I have found that if you just take the original assembly apart, clean the copper contacts and the surfaces they ride on with alcohol, and grease the gears and white plastic actuator liberally with white grease on the contact surfaces it will work just fine!

    I have a noise that is extremely similar to this....(2012 FJ) but the only difference is it ONLY happens when I hit about 60-70 miles per hour on the freeway. I haven't found any rhyme or reason to the air conditioning or heating. It just continuously sounds like a cricket when I reach 60-70 and I notice it when it's a a nice day (hardly ever happens on the cold days. It NEVER happens when I have stopped or idling. HELP.. THOUGHTS??

    • @phil_orr
      @phil_orr 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Bob Stobaugh I had a similar speed related noise in that area also. The cabin had always been dead quiet till one day I noticed a sound... a bit like a leaf fluttering and a squeek and only ever happened above 80 km per hour. It took me months to find the source. There are a bunch of wires that go through the firewall in that location and for whatever reason the insulation stated to make a squeeking noise. I moved them back and forth and the noise stopped. Must have been some very specific speed related vibration that caused this.

    • @gaving4359

      The blower motor wasn't in the way. It's that black unit on the bottom of the fan box. I don't think you can drop the bottom of the fan box, didn't seem possible but didn't try.

    • @gaving4359
      @gaving4359  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends, on where it gets stuck if it fails. If it fails closed you won't get any defrost or air ventilation in the cab with that particular actuator. Also, if the air conditioning is turned on, it could freeze the coil as no air movement will go across it. If it fails open, that's what you'll have to live with. If you're lucky, it will fail on the defrost so that your windows will be visible in the cold. If you think it's about to fail you can select your defrost mix setting and pull the plug on the actuator. That will stop it from moving and you can live with it that way.
