    the leek is a national symbol because st david told welsh warriors to wear it to identify each other while fighting the saxons and has been used as a cap badge by welsh regiments ever since.
    also, the dragon was adopted by the tudor family it didn't originate with them... it's been the battle standard of the welsh since celtic times.

      The story of the White and Red Dragon is an old Welsh myth that involves Merlin and Arthur, the White Dragon being the English and the Red Dragon being the Welsh.

    • @leod-sigefast
      @leod-sigefast 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@tameriajones593 they did not try to take it away from the Welsh. In fact to the old English (Anglo-Saxons) Welsh and British were synonymous, namely, foreign and non-English. Hence they never wanted that title. It was the later coming of the Norman-French overlords who wanted to conquer a Britannia in the name of the former glory of the Roman Empire. So yeah, the Welsh are the original British. No one is disputing that. The Anglo-Saxons most certainly wouldn't.

      @@spark_6710 - To be fair, you weren't exactly wrong. Scotland *is* technically a part of England and England *is* technically a part of Scotland. However, while Wales *is* technically a part of England, England *isn't* technically a part of Wales. The difference is down to how the three nations came together. While Scotland and England agreed to join together, Wales was annexed by England.
      But it's all down to how you interpret history. I hate it when people say that Wales is part of England, even though it's technically true. I'm sure the Scots are the same - the issue the Scots have is that many of them don't accept the Act of Union because their leaders at the time agreed to the union behind the backs of the population, who were against it. Scotland was bankrupt because of a failed expedition to the Americas, so the leadership decided to hand Scotland over to England via a union in return for money.
      British history is fascinating, if a little painful for those of us who aren't English.
      By the way, those of Welsh descent are the last remnants of the Ancient Britons. As a result, they are the only ones who could truly be called British. Those who spoke ancient "Welsh" dialects once controlled all of England and even parts of southern Scotland before the Anglo Saxons arrived. It remains a mystery as to how they were so easily displaced.

    Wales finally seems to be on the tourist map. About time, too. We've got more medieval castles than there are skyscrapers in the Arabian Gulf, beautiful mountains and world-class beaches. Pity about the bastard rain, but without it Wales wouldn't be so vividly green and fertile. Lived abroad for many years but I love being home.
