  • Breaking down the classic 5/4 rhythm from 'Take Five' by the Dave Brubeck Quartet. A great lesson in understanding how to count odd time signatures and learning how to solo with phrasing on guitar.

    Not to be overly salty, but I think you left some money in your wallet since the melody is off by an 8th note. The blue note is on the one...

    Since we are talking about the count, on what count would does the melody actually start? It feels like the 2. I can put the chords in my looping pedal, but I have trouble making it sound right.

    Hi Sean as always love the vids! As a mentioned to you before I'm a totally newbie, even though I can play some basic stuff. Lately I've been trying to correct my left hand (the one I use in the fretboard) position, specially the thumb position so I can be able to strech and have more power to my grip. However, my thumb hurts like hell... could you be so kind on providing me some guidance regarding a correct hand position? Thanks and Greetings from Chile

    • @seandaniel23
      @seandaniel23  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Andrés Iturralde definitely make sure that you're moving your whole hand/arm left and right to accommodate your reach. A lot of time we'll be reaching kind of unnecessarily when you can switch positions. The main thing to remember is to not overdo it. Everything will happen in time so you don't want to push yourself if it's hurting. Definitely practice the major scale in a 3-note-per-string and that'll get your reach going in no time!

    I saw an interesting video on Ted Talks about the "Indian Way" of counting by Jayen Varma. The presenter used words and their syllables (in this instance the names of cities in India or US) to do odd counts...he even does 11/8 in the video.
    I'm not going to link his video here, but you can just search Ted Talks for "The Indian Slap Bass Technique".

    Time Out is great, I love Blue Rondo à la Turk. The moment when the blues starts after minutes of Turkish 9/8 nonsense just always feels so good, and it is a good example of using time as a dissonance, right, making 9/8 sort of a dominant and 4/4 the tonic.
    Also, I'm now 4 minutes into the video and you still haven't mentioned Mission Impossible? Shouldn't it always be mentioned when talking about Take Five or 5/4? At least everybody always does...
    And forgot to say, you should make a riff deconstruction on Afro Blue as well, I feel it's a simple jazz song that has interesting simple rhythmic elements in the form of the 3:2 hemiola cross rhythm. Keep up the good work.

      Erik Döderlund not too sound too pretentious because I'm not a great musician/have alot of knowledge but certain kinds of jazz like bop have and more room for imrpov on the heads and you usually wanna hit those leading tones. A good example is "now's the time" by bird. this tune in particular shouldn't really have embelishment or changes in the A in my opinion but to each his own
