Dear Paul, thank you very much for this arrangement. I've watched several jazz pianist videos and tutorials, sheet music for "Take five" before learning it, yours is definitely the best. The left hand has become so soft and easy, the right hand takes the main role so skillfully, it's so smart. You made it swing. Brilliant work! 💜🎹🍁🍂
That's exactly how I conducted it with my jazz ensembles. First 3 beats like a waltz with the last two beats as a march. 5/4. I also learned this as a tutorial called "Patterns 6,5,4" which was quite interesting.😎
Excellent point you make at 13:40 about how long those right hand notes should be. I hear so many people interpreting this song and playing long notes in the RH. I always enjoy going back and listening to how Brubeck himself played it, almost staccato.
I solo on the bridge of this tune on my upcoming solo piano album. I am a Brubeck fan. I met him backstage at the Montreal Jazz festival when I was performing there. Andre Menard, one of the producers of the Montreal Jazz Fest knew I was a Brubeck fan so he called me up on the phone and said hey " Meet me backstage". And there was Brubeck with his wife. We were lucky.
Wow, what a cool story, thank you! He graduated from my alma mater, University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA ... but many years before me. The music auditorium is named after him. @@Jazzmentl
Thank you 😊. I chose to record this tune for my new album "It's Time" set for release next month. I didn't find other solo recordings with the solo on B section...so I hope folks find that interesting!
This is a golden tutorial. You are a great teacher and thank you for the sheet music. This seemed like a daunting piece to learn but with this help I am going to give it a shot!

Thank you for your contributions and teachings. I'm really just starting to play the piano, I've been learning with a mentor for 7 months and doing things on my own. At first it was on my own and I found a TAKE FIVE tutorial but it wasn't so didactic and I gave up, now I see that you have done a very good tutorial and with sheet music included!! I'm going to pick up this wonderful piece of music. I also want to tell you that I am studying your tutorials on BESAME MUCHO, HOW TO PLAY A MONTUNO and MONTUNO & TUMBAO and it has really gone very well for me in the short time that I have been playing the piano. I owe everything to my mentor (Cuban musician) and to your Didactic way of explaining without forgetting my effort. And that I don't speak English (this text is with the help of the translator). All the best.
I'm very happy to hear you are working your way through my Latin tutorials. Your Cuban piano teacher sounds like a great teacher!!! Keep at it! I also appreciate your feedback and I'm glad you are learning from my tutorials!!!🧡
Mr. Tobey, I saw the video on Facebook a few days ago, a very inspiring recording, because in fact very few people play this piece well on solo piano, I have heard mostly quite "poorly" played versions. And it was really cool to hear the solo on the B part, which is such a beautiful part indeed. Another wonderful lesson, Mr. Tobey. Your insights, videos and the pieces or themes you choose inspire many jazzers on the platform.
I appreciate your thoughtful comment Zoltan. You are referring to the video I posted on the Jazz Pianist group on Facebook. It's a great group and I hope folks take the time to check out your playing as well and subscribe to your channel. 😊
Tanks a lot. TO ME IT seems you are the most clear, patient and exat Teacher for this challenging piece.. And: I couldnt find the Tabs in the right corner above ??
Thank-you. Do you mean the links don't appear in the video in the right corner? Here is the link to the sheet music jazzmentl.com/take-five-solo-piano-sheet-music/
I have the same question. I believe A flat to A is a 4th finger slide from the black note to the white (so the fingering for the lick would be 1-2-3-4-4-5-4-3-2), but I'm having a bit of trouble executing that smoothly and consistently. In addition, the sheet I'm using is a half step up from the original key, which is generally a bit easier to play, but for the above lick means I have to use a pinky slide. Even with quite a bit of practice it still trips me up. Great lesson, by the way!
Hmmm, this tutorial is not intended for beginners :-). The good news Deborah is that I do have a jazz beginner series - it's free. jazzmentl.com/the-ultimate-beginners-guide-to-jazz-piano/ However, it is still intended for musicians that at least have grade 9 or 10 piano conservatory.
I like the video. But I am a woman, I have very little hands and I can't play 10th in the left hand (or the right one, of course). It's deeply desapointing, and jet imposible. I understand...it's so practical and beautiful, but I have to be born again to do it. 😅Do I have a solution?

Great to see a musician teaching so generously from his experience, with clarity and style! A fellow Canadian to boot!

How do you finger the first lick. I'm having trouble specifically with the a-flat to a-natural.
I have the same question. I believe A flat to A is a 4th finger slide from the black note to the white (so the fingering for the lick would be 1-2-3-4-4-5-4-3-2), but I'm having a bit of trouble executing that smoothly and consistently.

Yes indeed this is the correct fingering.
This is a great breakdown, i came in knowing the parts separately and left knowing how to put them together after all these years.😂
