Back here after the NHL just signed a 7 year deal with ESPN. We need Gary Thorne back in the booth ASAP!!!!!!
And instead, they get Sean McDonough John Buccigross and Leah Hextall. SMH!!!
He was tied to Baltimore until last year. September 2021 he was in talks with ESPN. Hoping a deal can be made for 2022-2023

Possibly the greatest call ever, period. It's definitely the most iconic.

The best part about Gary thorne is he is easily the most unbiased commentator in history. He always got excited when any team won.

@@srpdesigns absolutely they really put hockey on the map in the usa after Tom Mees passed away. Loved the music and the goal calls......they two complimented each other so well. I live in Montreal now and I don't care what they say about their announcers here in english or french they just aint Gary Thorne and Bill Clement

@@marco1974 This whole era in the NHL was phenomenal.. Everything about it was from the names on the jerseys to the last year's of those legendary arenas to the commentary of Gary Thorne and Bill Clement.. I can't believe how much time has passed.. I miss it like crazy..

Me too. The best nhl announcer ever. Sometimes I'll watch an NCAA hockey game just to hear him call the game. One year he did the Minnesota state hockey tournament.

Hockey in the 90s, early 2000s on ESPN was a great production. With Gary Thorne, and some thrilling playoffs/Finals to say the least
yah there were some cute stories, but bottom line, hockey from the mid 90's onward was and remains a cold bowl of soup compared to the 1980's til early 90's. when the nhl opened their eyes and allowed 2-line passes, then it started to get better. but the 80's remains the best.
also not to take away from thorne...a little frantic at times, but he has passion for calling the plays...and i'd take him over the antiseptic jim hughson

Good times. Thorne was synonymous with Wings' successes.
Loved watching him and Bill Clement.
What made it tough was loving the announcing of Bob Cole - Harry Neale, Chris Cuthbert - Greg Millen, and finally, ESPN's #2 crew of Steve Levy and Barry Melrose. All were VERY GOOD!
The reason why I love hockey so much. Nobody's better than the Thorne.
Wish they would get him back somehow. Some good playcallers out there but by far Gary Thorne is the most exciting and thrilling. Makes it feel like you're apart of the game and sometimes you feel like ur the one that scored the goal! Espn hockey intro was super dynamic with him too!

NHL should sign a deal with ESPN(after their NBC contract is up.) and get Gary Thorne back. Nothing against Doc Emeric, but Gary Thorne is the best in the game.

This is why to this day my all-time favorite NHL play by play announcer is Gary freaking Thorne!!! He has more emotion, love, joy, and utter amazement at what happens on the ice, as well as respect for the history of the game than any one else who's called the game. I can only hope that he comes to call more games now that the NHL and ESPN have a new deal! 👍👍👍❤😍

Watchin the NHL playoffs last night w/my kid and started telling her how great it was when ESPN carried the NHL games, Everything was better ,from the opening to the music but most of all because of this man...How I miss Thornes play by play commentary and passion for this game we all love!!

Fantastic compilation. In particular I like that you have his calls from some of the same games and series and showing the same enthusiasm for both teams when they score. He just wanted a good game he could make better.
