As a retired welder the structural integrity of the casting left the minute the alloy was heated up to a malleable temperature.
There's a reason why we don't repair rims like this in the United States. That rim running on a car going 60 mph when it hits a hard bump could literally shatter.
Alloy rims damaged that much should be recycled.

The aluminium welding technique is interesting and clever. Form the missing part with the steel table and then use the stainless rod to refine the shape of the added metal. That man has good eyes to be able to tell when the metal is melted, but be quick enough to remove the flame before it goes fully liquid and runs away.
I used to repair alloy wheels for rally cars with a MIG. I shudder to think about some of the wheels I made from two mangled wrecks cut and welded. Never had one of my repairs fail though and some came back freshly mangled after a puncture on a stage, to be rebuild again... I wouldn't do it these days... Too many lawyers

Considering the fact the the guy is using a zinc alloy to repair the wheel he is only soldering, a long way from welding. The repair, though done with considerable skill, is nonetheless a weak and dangerous repair.

Good job if it's just body work. It's pretty scary actually, after a fresh coat of paint, few buyer can tell the difference. I will never buy any used / repaired wheels again.

Years ago my Dad bought a used set of aluminum "alloy" wheels for his car. Then one day we had a flat, good thing near a tire place. After removing the lug nuts the wheel would not come off.After some simple persuasion it finally popped off BUT the center of the wheel was still stuck to the hub, the techs never saw anything like that. Dad was pissed, could have separated at highway speeds. Next day got a set of regular steel wheels and replaced those rolling death traps!
It had nothing to do with the wheels being aluminum.

@@dan_6915 That is not safe. During welding, a temperature in material change the micro structure of alloy. In consequance, the place around weld has lower strength. Aluminum alloys are very weeck if you have that imperfections - they are prone to cold cracking. You can't forget that the wheel rim is extremly loadet. That information you can finde in aluminum alloys metalurgy. Welding is not the same like casting. E.g. in Germany such repairs have been banned.

Next time you think you are brave remember this man melting alloy with an oxy torch right above his feet with these shoes. He has earned those thug life glasses.
This is literally soldering. Not to mention changing the temper of the wheel with that much heat. That wheel will break instantly with any kind of load or impact.
Soldering usually means the use of a metal that is of a lower melting point than the metal being joined. In this case, the metals are of the same melting point. More like welding. Also, aluminium anneals with heat, which makes it less brittle. The hammering is work hardening it. I'd say these guys are more savvy than you give them credit for and looking at the wall to wall wheels in that workshop, they seem to have a bit of experience.
@@Weejie2011 would the isolated heating of the wheel still not remove the temper of the wheel in the repaired area and affect its strength? unless once the repair was completed, they heat treated the entire wheel again
@@jacklarson6281 Aluminium and steel behave quite differently from each other with heat. The biggest problem I can see here is the lack of flux to prevent oxidisation and assist in removal of impurities. Annealing is probably beneficial.
Oh. and they seem to be heating a larger area than just the damaged part and with the conductivity of aluminium, it's not as bad as people might think.

an impressively functional repair. we all know the challenges with aluminium fatigue but clearly they wouldn't be in business if every rim they patched exploded.
Seeing some of the other videos here I’m not so sure lol... Also the puddled aluminum is basically the same properties of cast alloy while the rim will have been forged and spun. It won’t be too strong, and any oxide incursion will make it worse since there’s no flux or shielding gas like tig.
Although having watched the whole thing the aluminum they added is forming swarf and not just chipping out like cast when machined, so it might be ok. It will be quite operator dependent, tho, so its more of an art than a repair.

@@tallerdumo Looks like the fusing medium is of the same melting point as the material being joined, so not really akin to soldeing. More like welding.
@@Weejie2011 the lathe is not doing anything for the balance, it only takes away leftover material and make the shape 👌 that's why you use a balancer and not a lathe after fitting tyres 🤣🤣
He may as well forget the torch and just build up layers of spray paint then machine it. It may hood up longer than the original repair.

its aluminum you dont generally heat treat it to strengthen it. Thats more common on other metals.

Respect, this rim would just be used as material for beverage cans in the West. It is really amazing what can be achieved with simple tools and lots of skill. Personally I wouldn't use this wheel on the limit but surely a rim like this may cost a little fortune in your country. Thanks for sharing!

This is really dangerous to repair a aluminium wheel while trying to keep the same original width. The stuff he put isn't as strong as the original material. The only way to do it is to make it thicker externally.

Large rim cuts follows a big impact and generally the whole thing is weak. Depending on type of cars some are heavy like m/Benz that type oxy-accet repair is a waist of time and resources it will soon break along the same position. What an inconvenience! It only works perfectly well for aluminum decorative items. In Zimbabwe we use Tig-fussion repair and you won't worry about leaks afterwards no need to spread extras. Yeah of course some of our roads have potholes. Here it's much cheaper to buy original pre- aluminum items than to repair, argon gas is expensive.
