What are Gems? (Scientific Analysis)

- Today I go back to my roots! We are looking at the fictional race of aliens from the animated TV Show, Steven Universe: the Crystal Gems! I will try to classify their culture as well as their anatomy, traits, and bodies through scientific examination and speculation! I will try to answer questions like: What are they made out of? What don’t they need to eat? How do they work? Are they robots? And lastly: What they really are? By using Science!!!
We talk about everything from the Kardashev scale, to nanomachines, aliens, to, surprisingly, crystals!

Let me clarify: My theory might not fit the show 100% entirely, as it should. My theory is simply a scientific speculation and classification of Gems as if they existed in our Universe and had to follow our Universe's laws and rules. Due to this, the very nature of a fictional show with fictional rules will most likely contradict my real life speculation in some aspects. Just remember, I'm trying my best and I understand Steven Universe has magical elements that might not fit within real life scientific explanations.

Why has nobody thought about the strawberry Battlefield or what it now was. Since a lot of gems were shattered there, a lot of their energy from their gems seemed to have seeped into the ground, making the berry bushes grow huge compared to their normal size.
Could this be related to how Stevens spit can make things sentient/living and make things grow. It could be their gems radiation causing mutations that cause the strawberrys to grow large

I think so. A cyborg isn't exclusively an augmented human, any being that's some combination of organic and robotic parts qualifies as a cyborg. For example, terminators are one popular example of a cyborg, even though a terminator's organic part is only a covering that the robotic skeleton underneath can easily live without. Steven being partially robotic since birth wouldn't disqualify him from cyborg status. However, it's hard to say which parts of Steven specifically are robotic and which are human. It's possible that every single cell in Steven's body has both gem parts and biological parts, making each of his cells a cyborg in its own right. Although, I'm not exactly an expert on biology, but I doubt that would help me much with determining what happens when a fictional magical hologram rock alien and a human have a baby.

There was also a class of builder gems which includes Bismuths, and a class of scholarly gems such as the Zircon lawyers. Fighting gems are also seemingly separated into two types: Quartzes such as Jasper's and Amethysts used for more military and battle purposes, and smaller gems such as rubies used for personal protection of important gems and minimal-combat roles such as scouting missions.
Amethyst is a type of quartz, like literally. Sometimes they are called purple quartzs and Peridot called that on the show

This theory actually perfectly goes with the new directions that the show has recently taken. I believe that White Diamond, who is "not like us, not even like them (Blue and Yellow Diamond)" could have been created as a carbon life form compressed into the core of Homeworld, hence the fact that the planet is split in half. She could have begun creating the gems, and formed them into her image. She is the only life form of Homeworld, and perhaps that is why all gems are sexless but appear female, just like her. Either that or perhaps she was formed in a star, giving her power over light energy, but I don't really have a realistic explanation for that (realism for the species of lesbian rocks, haha). That's only just my take on it though.
I believe the planet is broken in half because the raw amount of resources required to create all four diamonds at once (and they were spawned at once, about 20,000 years ago).
Considering this after the S.U movie, i'm pretty sure white calls pink "starlight" and while this could be a coincidence, but also it could be due to their formation from the stars

Yeah, fully corrupted gems are essentially the closest things to accurate aliens we have in the show, considering hardly any of them have the humanoid body type and possess several traits that relate to Wayne Barlowe's Aliens and the Snaiad Aliens.
But yeah, it would be cool if we saw something like an accurate depiction of 'Sneople,' as Ronaldo refers them to, or even alien dinosaurs. It would make sense for the aliens to be dinosaur-like as a reference to how rocks are commonly associated with paleontology.

Yup. The Crewniverse is full of surprises, so who knows what they'll unveil. Maybe the series will have some gravity falls or adventure time-ish material where we see skeletal remains of extraterrestrial beings or creatures hidden in the background of certain episodes or locations.

Edit: this may or may not have been said already, but in chemistry, organics contain *hydro* carbons (chemicals like benzene, fatty acids, etc.; all of which contain hydrogen and carbon). Diamonds are *not* organic (but on the surface they are); they're simply an allotrope of carbon. Just a nitpick
Gems are very similar to the Transformers too. Replace the gender identification from female to mostly male, and split the Gem into a ball of energy and a CPU and you are ready
Two robotic alien races that were in their own civil wars due to a resource crisis that threatens the new generation as they are weaker than the last. The good guys (the crystal gems and autobots) are severely outnumbered by the bad guys (homeworld and the decepticon). The few differences between them is that one is all female who are made out of precious stones while the other are mostly males who are made of metallic ores. Wow, talking about a parallel universe right? Also I'm aware that the gems are sexless beings and the same might be said to be cybertronions, but you can tell which ones are more feminine and more masculine.
The IDW version, as well as the aligned one (The one from Transformers Prime, and the book exodus) are the one with the heavier comparisons in culture.
other thing in similar is the "faith", both species see their leaders as deities, the Prime`s were the first sons of Primus, the creator, and are selected by him; as for the Gems, The Diamonds are the mothers of their empire

One small error. When a gem is shattered, it's mind ISN'T destroyed. It's fragmented and still conscious.
Yeah, it has a very basic consciousness to it where it needs to form and will form if given the chance. Even if it just forms into an eye, a leg, an arm, etc. As seen with how that need allowed a shard to possess/power Frybo and in The Secret Team when all the gem shards reformed into body parts.
The Cluster especially proves all of this too.

I don't think the video said that the gem's mind was destroyed after shattering a gem, it could be that the nano machines split, so instead of having a whole mind composed out of millions of nano machines, it is like half a mind composed of broken and split nano machines, which is why they form only limbs and not a whole body.

If you watch the episode "Three Gems and a Baby" it is stated that Steven is a fusion as Rose was trying to split when he was just a baby, but it's clear that she wasn't able to and so she's pretty much stuck with him. I like to think that Steven's just a "hybrid" fusion between Rose and Greg, if that makes sense. But whether or not Steven actually is a fusion is kind of a different story in a way.

only thing i would dispute is how they form their physical bodies. I'm quite positive that they are made of photons entirely. otherwise they would form completely different in different environments.
so they don't construct their body through nanomachines, and they aren't made of any compounds. they are photons with mass, all produced by the energy from the gem.

So gems either are AIs created by somebody, or... they _are_ the Uploaded original organic creators. Still, the main weak point of your iteration of the idea is that they use organic components for energy collecting. Organics is actually pretty terrible at acquiring energy, they lose a lot of what the planet is receives from it's sun. I think that organic is used to create the gem structure, but they are powered by some other form of energy, and it might be potentially infinite (since we yet to see a gem that died of old age, and Pearl, I think, plainly stated that they are immortal, and she isn't a type of character that is prone to exaggerations, so most likely she meant that in a literal sense). So, possibly they are able to efficiently harvest the vacuum energy? Energy crisis in this sense might be linked to the the gem civilization's expand at a greater rate than their gem population. So there is just the issue of production unable to fulfill the demand. It is possible that this energy is more reliant, and/or maybe the fact that it is limitless, provides a reason to why the gems are not bothering with a Dyson swarm - it is inefficient in comparison, and also might produce _less_ energy than n amount of gems. And it is also might be easier to find complex organic matter, rather than trying to synthesize it from raw materials.
Maybe gems do some sort of crystal based fission or fusion? You can make diamonds with radioactive elements and they'll produce DC current. Maybe they do the same with other gems, and the nucleoitides are part of the resources they're saying Homeworld is running out of... They use a lot of energy over the eons they're around.
Vacuum energy is better though. Even with nuclear power, they'd start running out after a while.

No, for real. The thing about the gemstone being the computer, essentially, and the thing about particle manipulation is a great explanation(generally) instead of them actually being magical, which is a potentially more socially-acceptable explanation amongst the gems.
Extending on this a little could also explain fusion, in the sense that both "computers" could sync up with each other to form a higher grade Gem, with its own distinct coding patterns dependent upon the inputs from the parent Gems.
I know that's a bit out of hand, but still.

My headcannon was always that they don't harvest stars as light is what is used to power them once they have been created, like the gem acts as a solar panel, that would give a somewhat valid reason as to why they dont build dyson spheres. Also it has been shown that gems can control gravity to some extent, perhaps their form really is just a hologram with strong gravity field at the boundaries acting as a physical barrier.
