    This is exactly what I wanted to know. Thank you for making this video. I have a similar vehicle and plan to make a similar trip. You have given me confidence!
    Also, I appreciate you including the detail about the trailer brakes. UHaul doesn't advertise that detail loudly, but it makes a big difference in how much I can tow.

    This helps so much! I have a 2011 Subaru Outback 6 cylinder , all wheel drive, and am moving this weekend from FL to NC and am pulling a 6 by 12. My biggest item is an L shaped sectional but scaled back alot otherwise.
    My mechanic and Uhaul have helped me... I am nervous. Driving alone with my dog. Whew, this helps!

    I need to just transport a china cabinet an end table and a chest - mine will be light load - but I think i need the bigger trailer for the height - I dont want to lay the china cabinet down with the antique curved glass doors. due to the height of the 5x8 trailer

    I am moving from CA to FL. After checking the cost, I think it is a better idea to purchase an enclosed trailer and sell it later.

    • @cruisingaltitude2976
      @cruisingaltitude2976 13 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Good luck getting as much as you paid for it dude, if anything happens to that trailer in between, the value goes out the window. Just rent the U-Haul brother.

    • @ike7539
      @ike7539 13 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @cruisingaltitude2976 I rented... and paid $2500 from CA to FL and about $800 from FL to CA. I still believe if you have a storage buying used is a better option. You can use it one time and sell or keep it.

    • @cruisingaltitude2976
      @cruisingaltitude2976 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@ike7539 well yeah I dunno the cost if you’re going nation-wide but, usually it’s cheaper to rent the U-Haul if they don’t charge ya per mile. Why I avoided the full truck rental because in Denver it’s over $1.25 per mile now which can add up astronomically. For 2 days and 5 trips across Denver the trailer was $60 grand total. If you went cross-nation pricing may be different tho, I could be wrong here.

    Hi… I’m wondering if my 4 cylinder SUV can pull same size trailer for a trip from New York to Texas…
    Any advice.
    Thanks 😊

    • @johnthanup
      @johnthanup  ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The best place to start is
      1) Checking your vehicle's towing capacity (google search is usually the easiest, rather than going through its manuals)
      2) Estimating the weight of your cargo.
      3) Checking your towing hitch, receiver, balls etc are rated for the load.
      My car was also a 4 cylinder suv with a towing capacity of about 3000 pounds. The empty trailer weighs 1800 lbs, so we limited our cargo to about 1200 lbs. (total about 3k lbs) .
      I am positive my car and trailer could have handled more, but following their recommendations gave us peace of mind.
      Here's a few tips from my experience:
      1. Only try to pass other semi's when there is an easy long road or downhill. We lose speed faster than semi's on up-hills and can get stuck on the passing lane for a while - that is no fun and that is where people make most mistakes in towing.
      2. See if there is an easy way to get out (like drive through) before getting into tight places rather than reversing. Reverse gear should only be used in limited circumstances.
      3. Take plenty of rest area breaks and avoid rush hour driving & big cities as much as possible. Stay in the truck lane as much as possible.
      - It's easier to drive in the night/early morning when its cool outside and less traffic. That way you don't have to use AC and overload/overheat the car engine.
      - I think it's best to avoid moving to any southern state in summer, especially Texas. Best time would be Nov thru April.
      4. Its best to avoid (or limit stay in) hotels on long tow (& make sure there is room in your vehicle for a nap when you are tired). That way you can pause and resume your journey whenever you want without wasting a lot of time(& money) on booking/detours/check-in. Also dont have to worry about detours, parking, etc.
      5. Keep plenty of drinking water and snacks/fruits and it saves unnecessary detours for food.
      I just realized all of these boils down to having the mentality of a truck driver.
      I wish you the best.
      John
