- Lisa Gade compares the Microsoft Surface Pro with the Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro 700T and the Acer Iconia W700 Windows 8 tablets. All run on Intel Core i5-3317U CPUs with 4 gigs of RAM and have 128 gig SSDs. All have 1080p touchscreens and the Samsung and Surface Pro also have a Wacom digitizer with digital pen. Love your reviews Lisa! Especially that you talk about the pens because for me it's the deciding factor right now. I need it to work in Photoshop with pressure sensitivity so it's between the Surface Pro, ATIV, ATIV Q, Toshiba Z10t, Wacom Companion.. I think that's it actually and 2 of those aren't even out yet.
I have one question: Do you know which additional Wacom pens can be used on these machines? The diferent models of intuos pen don't work with diferent intuos boards.

You probably want Lisa to respond, but you might have to settle for me until she does. After having used the microsoft surface pro I can testify that it is great. It is a bit bulky as far as tablets go, but that's because it's meant to be a computer, not a tablet, and it meets that standard flies past it. It has your standard tablet stuff (usb port, micro sd card slot), so it doesn't lack anything important. It's also not too bad for typing. You will not regret it at all. It's really good to use
Lisa the W700 have been updated with the refreshed ivy processors and comes with a keyboard case that actually makes it pretty good. Just have to keep an eye on the processor speed and you can tell if you got the new model.
Great review. I have a Samsung 10.1 tablet and was thinking of getting another Samsung. I like that I can transfer things easily to my Samsung phone. I want to work with graphics and thanks to your review it will help with my decision when I'm ready to get one. You're detailed without being boring. I subscribed to you because of that. Is there any other tablet that the Surface that has a Micro SDXC slot? since 128Gig is not a lot I would like to be able to put a 2TB micro sd in my tablet at some point in the future
And do you think that paying 100 bucks more for the pro version of windows is really worth it or can I just get the media center on a regular win 8 machine?

I have a question, I'm planning to buy a windows 8 hybrid notebook (with detachable screen) to retire my old, I checked out your videos and I couldn't find a comparison one with all the devices I'm considering. These are the AsusTransformerBook, Samsung Ativ Pro, HP envy x2 and the Acer Iconia W700. It would be great if you could make a comparison I haven't had a tablet and I think one of those can make a good transition, thanks

Hi Lisa! You have tried plenty of Win8 devices already and I'd like to know your opinion about whether you support the direction that Microsoft is heading? Would you use these devices instead of your traditional laptop/desktop/tablet or maybe you are using them already?

I truly appreciate these comparison. Two main issues with my surface pro: 1. Heat. 2. Battery life. Would you mind answering couple questions regarding to these. Re: Heat. On tablet mode i.e. holding in my hand just reading ebook or comic, it gets awfully hot (not warm) quickly on my Surface. When you say doesn't get warmer than human temp, would you say the same for Surface Pro? Re: charge porting port do you think Ativ's port works with New Trent battery pack? Thank you in advance.

Same here. Im planning on buying a tablet and i was looking at that samsung ativ pc pro or surface pro. I wonder who would last longer when watching movies with one charge. my deal breaker would be which one has better battery life when watching or gaming light.
Hey Lisa, wanted to get the W700 at B&H New York, but now website says that the i5 3317U 128gb producion has been discontinued?? first forum link if u google "Acer Iconia W700 i5-3317U discontinued production?" outlines most of the questions that are really hard to find answers to like why has its production been discontinued/ what were the "teething issues". What is the difference between the 3337U and 3317U? why do they come with diff accessories and which one was reviewed here?

the surface pro has the ability to install and run legacy apps, meaning you can download, install, and run apps straight from the desktop. i installed office 2012 because it was not used to the new layout and it installed a bit faster than my gaming pc. its incredible

I also have an Asus Smart ME400C win8 Atom based tablet and I think that is the best value right now for student/light use as you can get them for around $300. It is also the only win8 tab I know which charges from micro USB port so you only need to carry 1 charger for both your phone and tablet. It also has NFC and one of the best rear camera of any tablet!

There's a lot of buzz surrounding CPU and GPU throttling on the surface and especially the iconia atm. Did you experience something like this, e.g. constantly reoccuring, large fps drops in games after 10-15 minutes?
Awesome review, I am still debating between the Samsung and the Surface Pro! I love Acer's option but the lack of digitizer pen isn't gonna work for me :(

Hey lisa im not sure if you saw my previous comment, it would be cool if you kept things interesting by doing some compatibility testing in your smack downs. Not everyone is a huge fan of windows so maybe throwing on some linux live cds via usb could be pretty cool to see how well they are supported driver wise, with those removable keyboards. Never the less, you still do a great job, and you are by far the best product reviewer on youtube.

I decided to wait till summer. I'm hoping there's going to be a better slate/laptop/tablet coming out this summer. Nothing makes me want to buy right away, although I'm leaning more towards Surface... How about you?

The Sony Vaio Duo 11 followed by the Acer W700 have the best volume and sound via the speakers. They're all equally good with headphones and external speakers.

I'm an artist, looking for the best tablet pc for painting. Are there any massive differences between the surface pro and the ativ pro? Wacom released a new driver which enables pressure sensitivity in the surface, Does the ativ work perfectly with pen sensitivity in photoshop as well?

The ATIV 700T is 3rd gen Core i5, as are the other two in this comparison. The Samsung Series 7 Slate was 2nd gen and it came out in 2011 (not included in this video comparison).

Wacom and N-Trig digitizers make for much more precise input and a thinner pen tip, it's not just about the pressure sensitivity. It's like writing with a pen instead of your finger.
Most of the major distros have there own signed bootloaders now to get around it but if its possible you can just disable uefi and it should be fine at least thats what i did on my asus. My only concern with those ultraportables would be the removable keyboards im not sure how well the drivers would work.

You can disable secure boot in the Surface Pro, I think they mentioned this in reedit.

Hi there, could anyone say which product would be best for a college student like me. The things that matter to me is that is has Microsoft word, powerpoint and excel, has good quality sound and screen to watch movies and to listen to music on iTunes with, uses windows 8, has good internet browsing and social networking, has a reasonable battery life and it is practical for use anywhere (even with the keyboard). All that considered, money no object, what would you say is the best product? Thanks

There are 128GB ones already, but he talked about some point in the future. The SDXC(extreme capacity) standard should allow for that, at some point in the future when it's cost effective.

Good review! I like to get the surface pro but I think ill wait till surface pro 2 lol.
I ordered the w700 2 months ago from amazon and it comes with a nice new keyboard case. google it to see a picture. I think it's the best bang for your buck! It also comes with a stylus although it isn't as precise as the other two and there's no active digitizer. I personally don't think it's necessary.

they are both the same to me, except that you'd have to choose the flavor you prefer...I've chosen the Samsung Ativ pro coz I believe in Samsung apps and liked the way they handled the digitizer and the ultrabook form when docked ... for surface I'd lose the stylus in a week and didn't like that it shipped without the keyboard. But still great device though

the reason i want to buy ativ pro 700t is of its 1024 pressure lvl pen. I want to become a concept artist but I would like to know if I can install one game, like assassin creed 3, resident evil 6, or tombraide and even crysis 3?

Another awesome review! Why is there no Asus EP121 in there, though? It's cheaper, has virtually the same hardware, a larger display and comes with a docked Digitizer pen. It's like reviewers have completely forgotten about it and I'm trying to understand why.

It may be defective. Or some program or process is running amok in the background and keeping the CPU way too busy.
Whats helping me lean towards the Samsung is the fact that I can use it like a laptop on a bed, with the surface pro, i have to worry about the instability of the bending touch or type covers. with the samsung, i can keep it at the angle that I want.
can be ativ pro 700t used as sketching? I've never seen any pro artist used it to its limit.
I'm in the exact same boat right now! Can't choose between them, and gaming & battery life is important to me too. The Samsung does better on battery life while gaming, but tends to have worse performance in some games. I think the Samsung keyboard is far nicer for light gaming, but the vents on the back and the plastic finish feel so gaudy to me. Soo... Surface wins on performance and looks, and Samsung wins on battery life and keyboard. Let me know when you make your choice! :)

We're doing pure slate Core i5 models in this smackdown. We also have a Vaio Duo 11 vs. MS Surface Pro comparison on our channel.
I found a table pc with touch( oviously) i5 cpu graphics with memory dedicated keyboard and stylus , more Gb in hdd than 128 and can carry with it everywhere and all of this in a product pack I want be looking for a keyboard or stylus separately is this or one ultrabook with win 8 pro :/
Yes, you can sync an iPod with these tablets, as well as an iPhone and iPad.
I have Surface Pro and in hindsight I should have waited for other slate laptops..
The stand is pretty dumb. It's difficult to use on a lap and might fall off the edge of a table. Also, can't adjust the vertical viewing angle. Touch/type cover has a little mouse delay when going from pointer to scroll.
Hopefully drivers and add ons fix this someday in the future.
I wish the Surface Pro was available in South Africa, I've been waiting for a local release to no avail. My decision now is to settle for the Samsung Ativ Smart PC Pro 700T.
Given the challenges of the new UEFI BIOS used in Win 8 tablets, I'm reticent to try installing alternative OS's or messing with partitioning on review units, sorry to say.
I like the look of the samsung as it has a good sized display. If the surface had the keyboard cover double as a dock with extra usb ports It would be perfect. I've got a samsung phone I love but I'm not sure about their quality. I've read several reports about how people had their device break on them, and supposedly the surface is a better made product.
The best part about the 700t is that you can get one of my beautifully hand crafted origami style cases for it. You will be surprised how much better a tablet becomes with a FlipSteady case. Check my newest video demo.
My Surface Pro doesn't get hotter than human body temp when using it for reading. It's warm to the touch but not what I'd call hot. No idea about the Trent battery for the ATIV.
can you brun cds using external dvd burners with these?

So, today I went to the Microsoft store and tried them out. I was pretty turned off by how the Samsung felt in my hands, it didn't feel like a $1000 piece of equipment, so I went with the Surface Pro. I've been playing with my new Surface all evening and I love it but I must say, the battery life is about exactly 4 hours with no heavy work, and that's right out of the box. The Samsung claims to last up to 8 hours so that's a pretty big difference. Best of luck!
Acer has way too many model numbers, but the thing to look for is the i5-3337U CPU instead of the i5-3317U CPU. That newer CPU is shipping in the US, but the performance improvement isn't much. As to when a given county will if ever get the new style Bluetooth keyboard, who knows.
