    Unbound Gravel 2023
    looking at events leading up to the event as well as race day coverage. Unbound Gravel is a special event and really has to seen to be understood. Things that I personally appreciate was the overall good vibes that would permeate the streets. With thousands of people flocking to Emporia Kansas, with a population for 24,000 i'm sure that swells to some 34,000 or more.
    The weather leading up to the event was, warm, humid with intermittent precipitation culminating in significant rain the day before that start of the 200 and 100 mile races. This precipitation created some incredibly sticky mud from race mile 12-16, making pedaling almost impossible. Tire choice was important and these conditions favored those who had a little more clearance.
    To those who made it past this point they were treated to another 184 miles of pure kansas gravel. Undulating terrain, water crossings and even a few dry dusty country roads the Unbound Gravel course is one that if you survive the sense of accomplishment will never be forgotten.

    This race is just getting off the ground.. Americans just don't know what they are doing.. but learning slowly.. very, painfully slow..I saw some press about the race and some of the best was the police chief of the town..guy knew the race distances and start times.. seemed genuinely enthusiastic about the event.. some of the pre and post race footage was ok . what has to happen is helicopter , airplane or high altitude drone video needs to show the beauty of the town and overall great landscape of the race. Like the Tour dFrance. Giro Italia and right now the Criterium du Dauphine..all these races are shown as an extended video post card for tourism and how fantastic the place is.. so why not go to Kansas and ride the course.. get a hotel or rental..drink and eat in the town enjoy other things.. this race is only going to grow and the opportunity to show people how beautiful and fun middle America can be can't be wasted..we need to sell Americana every chance we get and a great way to do it is showing thousands of people having a great time and that fun doesn't have to be for only 1 week.. and the cycling federation needs to pull it's head out.. start super super over hyping races like Redlands and Tour of the Gila.. when the world sees extended coverage of fantastic S.Cal mountains and ski areas near race or see the wonder of panoramic views of New Mexico landscape it will attract people. Watch World Championship from Australia and all you think about besides the racing is what a breathtaking awesome country.. can't wait to stop dreaming and get there.. and Unbound is a real opportunity to showcase America..

      Maybe we could reschedule it to somewhere more interesting and actually beautiful in America like Utah and Arizona and New Mexico and not ugly boring pancake Kansas.

    Not sure why that the 205 finisher have to compete with all the other riders in that narrow of a closing section. Granted not sure Unbound thought that they would have a 7-up sprint finish for the win. But still a little dangerous and using the slower riders to create barriers could of gotten someone hurt.

    • @aethylwulfeiii6502
      @aethylwulfeiii6502 ปีที่แล้ว

      A pancake flat race no matter how long will always have a sprint finish.

      @@aethylwulfeiii6502 but what jim was saying was that in a 200 mile race, one would expect a smaller leading group. Especially since in the past few years, the pro men’s lead group has ended with maybe 2-3 people in a sprint

    As an amateur, why would you pay $400 to ride in the shittiest roads known to man? flat lands, mosquitoes, mud everywhere and no support?????

    • @almsthre
      @almsthre  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      While this portion of the course definitely sucked, the rest of the course was good. Tough for me or anyone else who wasn't on their bike to comment but to get a finish at Unbound is on my list of accomplishments I would like and didn't see a single mosquito... I had large spiders and wasps in my room though haha.

      The no support part is interesting too - participants have to bring or hire their own support.
      Is that unique to this event?
