    Got the 4i4 during covid and have been very happy with it. It has the awesome in-built loop software feature which allowed me to play live through zoom using my DAW which had audio processing applied to my input channels as well as my pre-recordings. Highly recommended.

    My recommendations for any one looking to buy an interface regardless of the brand.
    Buy an interface that has these features:
    - Independent volume control for your headphones and speakers. It shouldn't be tied into one knob.
    - Direct monitoring switch with a monitor and playback blend knob.
    - A mono switch for checking mono-compatibility.
    - XLR or 1/4 jack outputs for speakers (don't use RCA if you have good speakers).
    - This is optional but MIDI I/O if you are looking to use your old keyboard or a digital piano as a MIDI controller.

  • @clicks59

    Great video! Thanks for posting. After much research, I started with the 18i8. What was appealing to me was the ADAT input. I then purchased an 18i20. The downfall is even though you have 16 possible inputs, only four from the 18i20 will record at 96KHZ. That’s due to the limitations of ADAT. All are capable of 48KHZ. I am now to the point where I would rather use external preamps even though the Focusrite preamps are decent. Fortunately, there are 4 inputs on the 18i8 that are just inputs so external preamps can be used without preamps being in the signal path. Eventually, I will step up to an Apollo or an Antelope.

    • @AudioUniversity
      @AudioUniversity  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Thanks for sharing this, TB Player! Yes, ADAT is limited to 48 kHz sample rate when using all 8 channels. I think your comment will save others in the community from the same headache you went through.

    I got myself a Focusrite-refurbed 2nd gen 18i20 and haven't looked back. Moved up from an SSL2, which was an upgrade from a 2i2 I previously owned. It's got all the I/O I need, and I've been collecting some outboard gear so it's nice to finally be able to put it to use

    • @Fiveash-Art

      That's funny .. my SSL 2 is a piece of crap ... it's extremely noisy and the 2nd instrument channel doesn't work at all. The build is really cheap plastic junk ... I'd tell most people to stay away from these things even though they seem to be getting rave reviews. I have no clue why.

      @@mgmg116 Seems there're a lot of these 'lemons' floating around considering a lot them have a failure rate after a year or two of use. I think it depends on how long you own them, ... but if you also look at reviews that aren't as concerned with the sales pitch, they'll mention the noise problem. There's a quite noticeable buzzing hum, and you get that without even having anything plugged in.

    I figured a long time ago that if producing was fun and meaningful, and I want to have really massive recordings of amplifiers plus a signal straight from the bass/guitar, and proper drums, I'd probably have to get the Scarlett 18i20 anyways, so... I bought the super cheap M-Audio M-Track Duo for starters (instead of a smaller Scarlett). So cheap that it can be used for learning, and then later just be a decent soundcard for a laptop or secondary computer.

    Very cool! I'm not a musician, though I do want to experiment with AI voice models, to record songs from one band with the vocals of a different singer.
    Mostly, I just want good audio for simple pre-recorded videos of me doing artwork. I'm guessing the 2i2 is what I'll get, and if eventually, after a few years, I need more, I can upgrade. But if the 2i2 suited you for several years, I'm sure it's fine for me.

    I’m stuck between 18i8 and 18i20
    Ive already been using a 2nd gen 2i2 for a couple of years which has been good and I’m a solo recorder for now but I know I’ll have some friends to record with at some point I also like to record dynamic vocals and condenser for instruments so being able to do it at the same time will be useful and both of them have divided multi input so that solves that problem.
    To be honest the midi stuff I have already runs off a usb so I don’t need any of that.
    If only focusrite could make an octpre as an interface rather than an add on

    @rahndail3863 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You mentioned that the 8i6 doesn't allow two mics to be connected directly, and that one would need an external preamp. On the product listing on Amazon it mentions two preamped mic inputs though - maybe that's just deceptive marketing? For example, I'd like to record acoustic guitar with two mics at different distances, so I'd imagine I'd want that feature.

    • @AudioUniversity

    As much as folks recommend the behringer interfaces, be warned it's a gamble. They sound perfectly good, but they break so easily. After a year of use, two outputs on my friend's uphoria 404 died from bad capacitors. If you don't mind the short lifespan, they're fine but if you want anything that will last longer than your weekend, look elsewhere.

    I was thinking about upgrading my Scarlet 4i4, primarily because of the number of mic inputs. So far I know I want to record at least three mics simultaneously, but with time who knows...
    Furthermore, I did some research and watched a lot of videos comparing Scarlett and Clarett series - to me, recordings made with Clarett sound much clearer and sharper. So my go-to choice would be probably Clarett+ 8Pre interface - 8 mic inputs should be enough, and comparing features and price with other series - I have a feeling that Clarett+ 8Pre is a solid upper-end best buy :) I don't know if I am missing something, but it seems to me that for the home studio recordings, it should be fine for the next N years :)
    Do you have experience with the clarett series?

    Is it possible to setup surround sound with studio monitors with the 18i20? For mixing in Dolby Atmos but also for watching movies.

    What would be your pick between the 18i20 and an SSL 12 in regard to preamp quality? I'm about to do a huge upgrade after years of using the same old gear, and the choice I make now has to last a LONG time.
    I only ask as I know the 4th gen Scarletts are out now, and the 18i20s I've seen all seem to be 3rd gen, so I don't want to buy something which will sound outdated in a few years. Thanks.

    Is there a specific preamp you would recomend to run a mic on the line inputs on a 4i4?

    hey! The speakers I use with my pc have a subwoofer that use a red and black wire to connect to it. I think it also uses a 3.5mm jack to plug the two desk speakers into my pc tower. Would I still be able to "route" the sounds through a scarlet 4i4 with how my setup is now? A friend of mine said I'd have to buy an independent set of speakers that only connect to the 4i4 and then use a single plug from the scarlet to go into my pc. I'd really appreciate any help :)

    Does the Focursite Scarlett 18i18 tend to heat up a bit? I'm asking because I live in the Northeast of Brazil, where the temperature is quite high. Maybe I'll buy an 18i18a. I've heard that this model heats up a little. Natural?

    Just a question about the 2i2.
    Could I sent a Mic through one of the pre amps, out of the line, into a compressor and back into the other line on the front? Or are the two line inputs on the back specifically for monitors and why?

    does anyone know how to mute inputs 1 & 2? on both my Scarlett and Sapphire interfaces (both have 8 inputs) I can't mute or turn off monitoring. I use reaper and I right click the arm button and the monitoring is not checked.
