dude your armour rocks you ar the one who inspired me to make my own armour im makeing it out of cardbord to start off with then once i made a couple of suits of armour i will be makeing them out of metal at the moment im makeing gladiator arena style armour and it going very well for my first try

+RetroWeld I wish I had a real one. This is just a cheap ASO (Anvil Shaped Object) that I got from Harbor Freight. I think I paid like $40. It's not tool steel though so it gets dented and dinged
I found a piece of railway track on council cleanup that someone had cut a spike out of. It works a charm

+Amhed Briseño You just have to keep at it. I promise you that you can do this, and that the end result will be very rewarding. If you need help along the way, all you have to to is comment on a video or message me on the Armor Templates Facebook page. Just keep at it....or try something a little easier than the helmet first until you are more comfortable with it.

Love your work :) I've bought both of your gauntlet designs. Would love to see you do a breastplate with fluting. Do you have any tips on the gauntlet fingers? I had a difficult time trying to make the holes in the leather gloves and riveting it all together for the individual finger pieces in gauntlet version 2
+AsianTom There's no real trick to it...or none I know of anyway. You just have to fight the fingerplates until you get them to stay where you want them to. That's definitely the hardest part of gauntlets....or maybe second hardest behind all the cutting that you have to do. As far as a breastplate...one is coming, eventually. It's a lot of work and it won't be a very high selling template so I haven't focused much attention on that project yet.
Haha, fair enough. I've had a fair bit of trouble trying to make a breastplate in the past. So with the gauntlets, what do use to cut the holes in the fingers?
+AsianTom just a drill, but I drill them out before cutting out the pieces. Otherwise you'll never be able to hold on to them unless you put them in a vise and that will scar the metal. They sell some kind of punch press to make holes but I imagine they are expensive.
could you make the rest of the leg for the leg for version 2. i want to make a full suit one day in that style.

+David Guyton You might want to check out Knyght Errant's channel before you design your chest plate. Lot of information there about why armour was shaped the way it was. For example , you don't want the chest piece to ride up into your throat when you bend forward, or the wasp waist should support the weight (just above the hips, not on them) to make it far more comfortable to wear ect.
Of course artistic liscence will play it's part :) depending on what you intend to use the armour for.

Yeah what I have in mind is for more of a costume or display piece. None of what I do is REALLY official armor, although some of it could be modified to be. I really just make things look cool, and teach people how I did it haha

Artistic liscence is a good thing in anything even slightly fantasy related :) Just thought you might find some of the info handy when plotting and fiddling round with basic templates, especially for the folks who plan on recreating it for things like LARP ect.

I have been into black smithing and such in the past, so I was just wondering where you get your metal? I have always had trouble finding brass and such and was just wondering if you get it online and if so, what site?
+Reed Dye I generally just use Ebay or Amazon. Lowes has a decent selection of metals (in some stores). For the smaller pieces of brass, I buy from Hobby Lobby
Why don't you use normal pop rivets instead of making copper ones?
cause they don't look historical and are weaker
I notice you hammering the metal a lot. Whenever I do that it looks like dimpled dog crap. How do you manage to take it from that to a mirror finish without a hint of hammer marks? Reeeeally need to know! New tutorial perhaps?
Well with some stuff, like these greaves, there's no need to hammer much on them, so there's no dimples to worry about. For dished pieces, like for the shoulders or a helmet, it gets really ugly at first. You have to planish a lot (hammering with a very flat hammer from the top, with a slightly curved surface underneath.) I can probably do a tutorial on the process, sure

+Robin Van Schie I generally only make one gauntlet or one greave, so I don't have enough of the set to put on very much at one time.
Hey, Quick question. How maneuverable is the armor that you make? I plan on buying your templates and making some armor for my Larp outfit and was wondering how well this would work in combat.
+Razzman I try to design all of it for maximum articulation, but it's certainly more limiting than NOT wearing armor. My Iron Man gauntlet is the exception, as it has limited wrist and hand movement

+Luke Song Just buy shin guards for soccer/football. The chances of these staying on and being comfortable for the duration of a match is slim, despite how cool they look.
question could you use a rubber hamer instead of a leather one?
rubber hammers bounce a lot. You can do it, but the leather hammer is easier to control. They're not expensive either.
thanks for the info! Me & my partner are making some armor and where we live its hard to find a leather hammer! Also can you give some advice on a 3d dragon scales? Would we use the same process of curving?
the only way I would know how to do that is to hammer them out into a curve (like you see me do with a dishing stump on some other builds). That's way too tedious for me to want to attempt that though.

Why do you use different typs of metal for the ribbids?
+Hass Erfüllt because copper is much softer and easier to hammer into a rivet. It also looks a little more visually appealing in my opinion. You don't have to use copper though, you can use any metal you like.

I did some articulated plates at the bottom of my Version 1 Greaves that covers about half the foot. I don't know that I will do a full Sabaton...I don't think the tutorial would be popular enough to make it worth my time.
would that stop a tomahawk or sword?

David Guyton thanks for the response. have a clue what gauge you would need to stop them? maybe you have some spare stuff and can do some testing. i think the tomahawk would punch thru harder.
+TJ N that kind of protection would need to be at least 18ga if not 16ga, and heat treated after fabrication. That's essentially what a suit of armor was back in the day. I don't do that kind of armor...mainly just show pieces or costumes. It's tough, but not tough enough to take an axe

What gauge metal do you typically use for your pieces?
20 or 18, typically. I have used 16 for some helmets, but it's easier it you do it a little thinner with this method, since I don't use heat

Very hard to do that in 14 without heat. I'm afraid I don't have an easy answer for you
