great work by the armorer! shitty and full of misinformation/debunked old theories commentary by the commentator....especially the part about "later armors were made of leather, linen even!"....metallic and organic armor existed together, one is a fandomentally cheaper and the other more pricy than the other....although a hoplite who wanted to give some love to his linothorax or spolas could turn it into something that protected and costed as much as a bronze thorax.

It's like 1.6mm thin and surprising strong enough to stop a iron spear head penetrating you. The steel ones are about the same thickness and can stop a 160lb English longbow
Would be interesting to see what gold would look like. Homers illiad mentioned an exchange if breastplates between a Greek and Trojan with family friend connections. One was gold the other bronze.

@Xaris Xeros but what's your parameters for Sanity? is it by comparing our modern understanding to the past or from a actual subject of the era and understanding what their Norms were? you cannot apply a modern sentiment to the past without qualifying it in that same period. To help give a little bit more body to your hypothesis is the idea there is the possibility of electroplating existing but I am myself not familiar with the process necessary to electroplate Gold onto bronze. And if it's only plating why was it a big enough deal to have mentioned in the Iliad after such a long exchange regarding these two Warriors.
As a brief aside, this mini story with an Iliad between two Warriors that have not been in pop culture to my knowledge, took up quite a bit as a Side Story. With a concluding with this remark regarding the gold breastplate somehow being more valuable.
@Xaris Xeros it's certainly important to keep in mind that The Iliad is a cultural memory. Where in the authors that put it to paper where hundreds of years removed from the event. Which we ourselves did not know it was a real event until the 1850s with the work of Heinrich schliemann. It's certainly a curious statement that boggles the mind.
As a curious parallel in Exodus there is a claim that the Priestly breastplate is constructed mostly of gold. Of course this may also be a cultural memory as the oldest version of the Hebrew scriptures is around the time of Roman occupation over a thousand of years removed from the events. To keep that in perspective the time that the Iliad was committed to paper was a shorter space of time from the story of Moses to the writing of the Torah that we know today.
Shure it would be interesting. Just send him 20 kgs of gold and we´ll all see.

I thought traditional greek hoplite armour was made of linnen called linothorax and not this cuirass.
Linothorax was adopted later because it was cheaper to produce and lighter to wear. Things change as technologies evolve.
It was made of leather not linen, and the metal cuirass was for richer hoplites

I reckon you're right. Why go through all that effort when you can cast it in high detail and hammer harden it and have it as thick as you please instead of that thin sheet that anything would pierce. Even a sharpened wooden stick would go through that.

Bronze is not always cast. Regardless of the reasons.
In my limited experience sheets aren't that hard to work with and you can always anneal it, just heat it to red and quench, yes, unlike steel it will anneal that way.
Bronze and Brass in antiquity are a complex subject, by the way, the alloys weren't always the same, you find copper alloyed with zinc, arsenic, tin and lead in different proportions in all sorts of applications.

How effective is vs arrows and weapons?
This type of brass cuirass iseffectice against cutting, mediumly effective against thrust (a horsedriven thrust could shatter it) but not at all effective against blunt weapons such as maces. But no one used blunt weapons in archaic era. Or very rarely.
@@szattila0609 the colour is more like bronze that brass because brass is pale and with a gold like colour but if is brass in that case yes is not hard enough to resist damage from any weapon, well actually thrust damage is more dangerous than cutting damage vs a breast plate but anyway the brass is not intended for that, greeks use bronze and not brass
