BIG Axe Restoration

- In this video, I’m restoring a big bearded axe from the manufacturer Jeklo Ruše in Slovenia. I found this axe in the garage when we moved in to our house. It wasn’t broken when I found it, I broke it while cutting roots of a stubborn lilac bush. It’s an all round axe with a long handle 99cm (40in). I didn’t want to throw it away so I decided to restore it.
I started by cutting off the broken handle and moved on to sanding the head to remove rust and pitting. The original green color was removed with paint stripper. I wanted to keep the original two-tone look but I didn’t want to paint it so I decided to polish the bottom part. But first, i needed to sand it with gradually finer sandpaper. I started with 120 grit by hand and moved to a polishing flap disc with grit 320. This left a really good finish, next step was polishing to get a mirror finish. For this, I used metal polish from Autosol, a great product (NOT sponsored) that works really well! I sharpened the axe with a file and then with a stone, I also sprayed some oil on the stone. Then I taped off the polished part and sanded the rest with a coarse scotch brite pad. I was really pleased with how it turned out.
The handle was originally made from beech as this is common in the Balkans, but I couldn’t find an axe handle from beech here in Sweden. After a lot of searching, I found a handle that was meant for an axe pick, but it was made from beech and had the right dimensions to make this work.
I hope that you enjoy the video! Let me know what you think by leaving a comment.
