Very high marina rates in US. In Sweden were i live i pay 600$ a year in our club marina including 2 haul outs. It's a bit do it your self. A typical transiet slip fe in Stockolm arcipelago is about 40-60$ a night incl electric. I got a 34 fot motor boat so a 47' probably pays 10-20$ more. Mery christmas from Sweden.
My Wife and I are finally retiring and moving from Idaho to the Pacific Northwest (Port Townsend, WA). We’re buying a new home and a 50’ boat so we can start enjoying the ocean. I’ve been watching your channel from the beginning of your boat journey and I just want to thank you both for your videos and your story. You’ve helped us in several of our questions that we’ve had. Buying a boat, what size we need, repairs, costs of marina’s (although Florida is probably not the norm) and so many other bits of information. We even have two cats that we will take on board. I just want to say that I think it’s great that you two are living your dreams at your age. Why wait until you’re retired to live the way you want? You’re an inspiration to everyone. My only question is; why couldn’t you start this channel and your journey in the 80’s when I could have really got the message? Oh right, there wasn’t an Internet then. I really appreciate this video. I do not own a boat, nor have I ever owned a boat. But I recently applied for an operations specialist job at a marina and am using this video to give me an idea how the structure is and prepare for an interview.

There are many areas that are exposed to the ocean or need open water crossings.. and the entire ICW is salt water. Inlets can also be rather bumpy at times.
Thank you very much. I recently purchased a 2556 Bayliner Trophy. The boat is an 87 model, but it was stored in a climate controlled building for 20 years. The interior has a moldy smell, and I will need to have all the cushions, and carpets ether treated, or replaced. I plan to motor up, and down the East coast, and tour the Revolutionary war battle fields, and our revolutionary, historical sites, and meat new, interesting people.
I use an electric scooter (imax s1). I can't see myself hauling a bike on a dinghy. It's been through some rough dinghy rides and is still holding up. I do bring it inside even though I have a bag for it. The downside is you have to be able to fit your groceries in a backpack or the little basket I bought for it.
Cute little scooter! When I first read this comment I was envisioning a mini-motorcycle and wondering how that would be easier in a dinghy than a small folding electric bike (which we have't yet transported by dinghy.). But that totally makes sense!
I pay $749 a month for my Apartment in Jacksonville, which includes all bills. I was actually thinking of living on a boat to save money. I would have thought marina dockage would be $150 a month maximum. How naive was I?

I just got a rate from Haulover: for a 40 foot vessel , $44 per foot per month! Oddly it went down for shorter. $35 for a 35 footer. I didn’t ask if would be $20 for a 20 foot boat. LOL! I want to buy a boat but I need to stay in the Dade/Broward area. I am trying to make a plan to save on living space cost but this is prolly not it. Not in this area anyway. I’m still looking and am looking at mooring fields and anchorages but docks seem out of reach. I didn’t even KNOW about live aboard fees!

Yes it does cost more to live in a condo with intercoastal waterway views, but you forgot the cost of the boat. So another $200,000. Then there is maintenance on the boat that is always in water. The only thing about the condo is-it doesn't move, which may or may not be a good thing.
Well.. another $150k for us (and they can be purchased for even less), plus maintenance of course. Most condos around us have been 500k to a million. But mobility is priceless to us :)
We started in Punta Gorda, FL in 2017 and made it as far north as Charleston before the pandemic. We're 'sloopers' - doing it very slow and taking our time.
Would you please do another one of these marina costs when you get to Atlantic City NJ. through NYC. I live on eastern long island, and will be anchoring out along the way to NYC. I am concerned about the costs for when I decide to go to Atlantic City NJ. I would prefer anchoring out through NJ as well, but I know I will have to go in to have pump outs and to restock the boat ( drinking water, food, gas, etc etc ). I have a 25 ft Chris Craft Catalina Express Cruiser, so I won't need a large slip.
All depends on you're setup for energy (solar, wind, generator) and access to shore options. We've found a few mooring fields in cool spots that allowed monthlies.
I've been looking around South Florida for the same. Expect to pay between high 900's to over 2 million for a slip. My target spots are Key Largo, Marathon and Lauderdale.
How to afford the lifestyle. Do you have concerns the value of the boat will deprecate below loan balance over time? I have a debt free mentality so having a hard time making the numbers work.
No, we are not concerned - as we don't consider the loan on our boat a debt. We only financed to avoid cashing out investments and paying capital gains taxes. We are actively paying it off and will have it paid off within a couple of years. If we depreciate below that - then there's something huge up in the world that is of bigger concern. And we afford it by working full time to earn the lifestyle we want.
Electric unicycles are awesome gotway Tesla or a gotway msuper the Tesla has a 30-mile range and the M super has a 50 mile range they both do about 30 miles an hour

But is your studio waterfront and in the center of a cool downtown? Not many lodging options in such locations rent for that low. :). You'd be hard pressed to live for cheaper almost anywhere (without taking in room mates or moving to a lower cost area). However, right now - we're paying about $650/month with electric for our slip. So it is possible. But you need to buy the boat too.

if you change the displacement of a boat it will change the waterline even if it is the same hull!

Local laws can vary - and more and more restrictions are going up in some overused areas.

There's a city marina and the Jacksonville Landing. We didn't stay at either, and instead anchored out.

The formulas/example we gave for how costs are figured should be the same up there... just apply the per/ft charge for the marinas you're considering.

Not really.. although some change to different types of anodes.

There is a site that lists private docks.. I forget the name, but it's an option. We haven't used it yet.
Wow! 2 to 5 times as much as RV parking. Is cruising 2 to 5 times more enjoyable? Owning a boat is a hole in the water you pour money into.
Only 2-5x the price for *nightly* stays. Monthly is on par. It's been TOTALLY worth it. We're having the time of our life.
$437 for a week is insane. You pay that for a hotel room. In a marina your bringing your own

Don't know of too many decent waterfront 2-bedroom / 2-bath hotels with full suites for $60/night in prime downtowns like many marinas are.
