    Perfect video to show the dd500’s ability to be so much more than just delay.

    Great video! You inspired me to dig around with my DD-500. I learned if you run the delays in parallel, with Tera Echo on A, Tape mode on B, you have even more sound sculpting options.

      Edit scroll to Contol. Select Parallel. Done. It is very intuitive and easy to use once you get the knack of it. One of the best delays you can buy...and it has presets!

    Thank you for doing this video. I tell people that the DD 500 is my desert island pedal, because it can do so much. You can create almost any effect within the edit parameters. I get lost in it, maybe too long. This is a great example. There aren't enough examples on TH-cam to show the possibilities. This is a wonderful, but simple deep dive. We need more like this.

    • @mauritsnienhuis

      Thanks for sharing that and leaving such a nice comment. I'm very happy to see that this video is being helpful. I agree, the almost unlimited amount of options can be a bit daunting but I love how it can also inspire to create new things. Thanks again, Lance. I appreciate you stopping by.

      I bought one few days ago, really cheap used. I am lost in this pedal in the good way! amazing! totally underated pedal still in 2023. The possibilities are endless, maybe for that people sell it I don´t know, but to me now is my desert island pedal too. Thanks to share, excellent video!

    Great video, but imho the freeze pedal sounds way better! This pad type of sound can be achieved by any modern delay/reverb pedal (like the strymons) that has a freeze function, but they will never sound like the ehx freeze, which in my opinion sounds actually like granular synthesis, and fits a dry guitar sound much better. You can always give effects to the guitar and the ehx freeze pedal later. Just my two cents anyway. (I have a Strymon Big Sky, but seriously considering getting the EHX Freeze)

    • @mauritsnienhuis
      @mauritsnienhuis  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for watching! To each his own I guess. :)
      I personally like the DD-500's frozen sound way more than what the Freeze creates. I feel the DD-500 is less consistent and has some texture to it. Along with the being able to add modulation which makes it almost sound like warped vinyl think it's the clear winner. Whatever works for you though!
      If I'd buy a dedicated pedal for this type of sound then I'd probably look at the Supego +.
      All the best and thanks for leaving a comment. :)

    Cool trick. I will try. One of the other TAP options is something like a WARP effect. I like it but find it abruptly ends when I let off the pedal. Is there anyway to have it nicely fade out?

      @mauritsnienhuis  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you very much, and you are very welcome!
      Yes, that did cross my mind and definitely makes it even more compact. :) Though, I LOVE the tape setting on the Echo Park simply for its tape emulation. When you crank the MOD it adds that very cool wow/flutter and crackle (especially the crackle) that I've never heard any pedal do. I've tried multiple tape delay emulators and keep coming back to this one. Besides that, I wanted to keep things simple with each pedal offering a single sound. But it'd be a great option to use the B patch for sure.
      Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.

    This all sounds really good. What would happen, though, if you'd put a modulation (or delay) pedal BEFORE the Freeze or DD-500? Do you think you would be able to also ''Freeze'' a sound with the modulation (or delay), but later NOT affecting you ''solo'' sound. Thanks!

    • @mauritsnienhuis
      @mauritsnienhuis  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Peter! I'm glad you like the video and sorry for the late reply...
      Assuming the DD-500 freezes slightly more than say the Freeze, I think it could potentially grab and sustain some of that modulation or delay pedal you put in front, but it won't be much. I don't think it's worth it for the frozen effect. Though, if you just like how your playing sounds when you noodle over the frozen sound, with those pedals before the DD-500 then I would go for it! :)
      That being said, the drone could also get very swirly with a phaser/flanger/chorus after it. Tons of options! Have fun!

  • @kombik7189
    @kombik7189 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Have you considered running the "Freeze" preset on the B preset of one bank and having a lofi tape echo preset on the A preset so you can run the frozen sound into it and obviate the need for another delay pedal?

    • @mauritsnienhuis
      @mauritsnienhuis  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I have considered that! :) For this video I wanted to keep it simple by showing 3 pedals offering 3 different sounds but to save space you could definitely find a sweet delay for the B preset. The Echo Park is so sweet though. :) I prefer it over the DD-500 tape delays even though those are fantastic as well.

    This is really neat! One question, since you can have 2 delays going at the same time on the DD-500, could you do the same thing you're doing in this video but add the extra delay on the DD-500 instead of using a separate delay pedal? I hope that makes sense.

I am looking for an alternative to the Freeze for practising scales and so on. Very basic use, although it would be nice to future proof my purchase. After your video, I am still unclear whether you use the Boss DD-500 to hold a note or a chord while you are practising scales and licks ... thank you so much. Cheers

      I'm sorry for missing this comment, Fancesco! I hope you figured out what works for you? Of the two, the Freeze is obviously the most affordable but the downside is that it can only do a single thing. The DD-500 is a fantastic delay module so I prefer that guy over the Freeze (that I actually sold after making this demo).
      Have a good one!

    Could you do the same thing in dual mode and have the reverb and delay in the second delay rather than extra pedals after, I ask as I have the dd500 but not the other pedals after

      You can definitely run Delay A into Delay B by running these patches in Series. EDIT > BANK > CONNECTION: SERIES - personally I’d still use a separate reverb pedal, but to each their own!

    Thank you! This is a great vid. I have a dd-500 on the way and I didn’t know it did this. If you wanted to set up a board for sound on sound like Gilmore would it be best to split the signal and then blend. Or is there a simpler way of doing this? Thanks

    • @mauritsnienhuis
      @mauritsnienhuis  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're very welcome! I'm not familiar with Gilmour's sound but I think you could do some fun things with splitting the stereo outputs. I'm not sure how it all works but maybe you could feed the frozen sound to L and dry sound to R? Maybe you could even control the mix with an expression pedal. Options are pretty much endless with this unit, lol.
      Thanks for watching!

    When you demo the sound of the tera echo settings, are the repeats coming from the echo park? Trying to set this up but not sure how you get those initial repeats within this mode.

      If you're referring to the sound around 2:10 then that's just the Tera Echo (the red light on the Echo Park indicates that it's turned off). Later in the video I do turn it on but mention it in the video itself. Thanks for watching!

  • @GlennMichaelThompson
    @GlennMichaelThompson 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good sounds... but how do you compare a $99 Freeze pedal to the DD-500 at more than 5 times the price...? Apples & oranges. Good video anyhow, just not a realistic comparison. Cheers

    • @mauritsnienhuis
      @mauritsnienhuis  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for your comment, Glenn! I'm glad you like the sounds, both pedals are cool tools.
      The title says that I'm comparing the drone sound made with the DD-500, to the drone sound created with the EHX Freeze. That's what I'm doing in the video so I don't agree that it's an unrealistic comparison. I'm clearly not comparing them feature-wise or cost-wise since one is a multi-delay pedal and the other one is a single-effect-only (that doesn't even fall in that same category as the DD-500). I know many guitarists in the post-rock type genres that own(ed) an EHX Freeze and various delay pedals at some point so combining pedals could be a way to reduce the amount of gear and pedalboard space. Take care and make cool music!

  • @basstabs74

    Nice function , but with this setup you're allowed to sustain just what in freeze is called latch mode isn't it ? I mean ... there's no set possible for instant "freeze" by pressing the pedal ... (?)

    • @mauritsnienhuis
      @mauritsnienhuis  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, that is correct. I'm not sure if you can create that instant freeze effect with the DD-500 while holding the switch down. I typically used the Freeze the way I showed in the video so that was what I was after. Thanks for dropping by!

    I have a DD 500 but when I programme to 'hold', it merely only holds if I have my foot permanently on the tap/ctl knob. In this video you only hit the knob once and it holds permanently without needing to keep your foot on it. It is generation 1 so do I have to upgrade to 2? Any help would be great.

      @matthewevans4841 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mauritsnienhuis Thanks for replying. What you suggested doesn’t work and I think it’s because I need to upgrade it to version 2. At 2.16 of your video on the ‘edit’ page it shows the option of ‘bank’. Mine doesn’t offer that and secondly at 2.22 you move the tap/ctr to hold which then opens a new menu of mode and level (then you scroll to toggle), again mine doesn’t do this. Looking at the original owners manual it states that you have to hold your foot on the knob to get this effect so again I think it’s a new feature of version 2.

      @mauritsnienhuis  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're not being a jerk. :)
      Though at the time of making this video the DD-8 wasn't released yet and I don't own one now. You mention the chorus pedal to be after the frozen delay to add some modulation? I used the reverb (with modulation) pedal as it also smears out the drone-y sound as well. To me, that really blends things together well when you play over it.
      But cool you can do similar things with the DD-8. I love the typical Boss pedals. I still own a DD-2 and DD-5. Two classics in my opinion.
