As a geologist, I was so giddy to see this video and watch you both collect fossils. You found some really great ammonite specimen! Fun fact, belemnites are often used by stratigraphers to date the surrounding rocks because they existed for such a short time (geologically speaking). It might be also why you had a harder time finding them. I am glad that you and Chris had a good time fossil hunting! Also, it may seem silly, but I really appreciated the safety minute with warning people about the cliffs. People often don't think about it and end up getting hurt trying to explore.

They are shells that had their material replaced with pyrite when they were fossilized. So like dinosaur bones are fossilized into rock, these were fossilized with pyrite. It happens when water rich with minerals that make pyrite filled in the spaces of organisms (even the size of cells) and over time the pyrite is able to form. I hope that explains it a bit, but I’m happy to clarify in any way.
Genuine applause for Sharla's resilience against the bitter English rain, particularly in winter. Cold isn't usually fun but wet cold is always miserable.
Well done with your humorous fossil hunting video and all your little fossil finds. You especially found some great little ammonites preserved in iron pyrite. You really went out there and did your best in all that rain ☔️ - at low tide. You certainly pointed out all the safety aspects well, about keeping away from the cliffs. It’s extra fun to find one of the right little rocks at low tide and split it open to find a fossil inside along the Jurassic Coast. There is one stipulation you must not dig in the cliffs " in situ."You certainly must not hammer the cliffs which could be fatal. The cliffs are dangerous and liable to fall suddenly and without warning! . You can save the little fossils like this from the destruction of the sea at low tide, on a rapidly eroding coastline. If you find anything particularly important you must register that at the Charmouth Heritage Centre. I have found many fossils that have ended up in museums across the world. Some important finds I have made by tapping the right little rocks carefully with a hammer, that had scientifically important fossils within. (45 years experience in the field helps.) If you get back this way in the future I can always take you folkes Fossil Collecting and show you the small nodules that split like slate. As a local who has seen a lot of fossil hunters, your tips are top tier. Also I'm surprised that people said that they're hard to find, there's literally an insane amount around. Next time you visit Dorset, do visit Kimmeridge beach, it's the next level fossil hunting for you. Not only does have a lot of fossils, the rock formation is stunning and great visual display of the why there is so many fossils on the Dorset coast.
Out of curiosity, do ya'll find sharks teeth there? Very cool to see these things being found on a beach. I live across the pond in Florida, about 10 min from the beach my whole life and I spend the time there either swimming or hunting for sharks teeth. I can find about 20 in an hour. It should be noted I'm on the west coast so it's the Gulf of Mexico and not the Atlantic, but just curious if sharks teeth are as prevalent. I'm guessing probably not. It's kind of ridiculous how many are here, super exciting to find "newer" ones and every now and then the very rare Megaladon ones (I've found 2 in 40 years...one at the beach and one on a construction site about 20 miles from the beach lol). Anyways, just wondering, best of luck in your searches! (not sure I'd go to the beach as often, or ever, if I lived there, I'll keep my 95 degree constant sunshine and 85 degree water thanks...probably why the sharks stayed around here too).

I really enjoyed this Sharla. My late father was an avid fossil hunter and this brought back many Sunday afternoons in the 1960s and 1970s when we were out having a family day, mostly watching Dad do what he loved and what to me at the time seemed a pointless waste of time away from a warm house and tv. Your enthusiasm was infectious.. and Chris reminded me of me. Palaeontology/Geology is complex and interesting and kept my dad gripped for the rest of his life -and he rose to be an associate curator at Oxford University museum and left his collection to the museum in his will. Thanks for this trip down memory lane :)
Watching you two over the years both apart and more recently together has been a great pleasure but this is your best yet in my opinion, not for technical presentation nor for subject matter excellent though it was; no, I mean for simple human warmth, nicely emphasised by the cold grey wet day. There is a comment below with many likes that says you should travel the world and vlog it. Worth thinking about, no?

Just FYI, the "UFO" shaped rock Chris beat the life out of was actually a fossilized Crab. It's very meticulous work to get them out of the rock, and they're pretty common. But still very cool once you've chipped them out.

This looks really fun! Something else you might want to try in the future is mudlarking in the Thames in London. If you do a guided tour they will help you find interesting things and tell you the history of what you locate. Pottery shards, clay arrows, clay pipes, coins etc

This was a fun video to watch as I also went fossil hunting in Lyme Regis, this July. I was super lucky with the timing of my visit (which I’d booked long in advance) because there was a huge rain storm the night before!! Also I went fossil hunting with Brandon from the @LymeRegisFossils channel and he showed me the best areas of the beach to search. I found LOADS of fossils!! 🤩 I didn’t find as many iron pyrite ammonites as you did but I found several larger stone ammonites. And several intact Belemnites as well as lots of Belemnite fragments, and a big hollow sea sponge fossil. And Brandon found two big sea urchin fossils! I also found lots of Victorian pottery and glass fragments as well as a Victorian marble and an egg cup. And I touched a piece of Victorian asbestos, not realising what it was!! (I guess that’s another reason to wear gloves!) 😄

Just a heads up to correct a common misconception: geologists and paleontologists are ones who look at and deal with fossils. Archaeologists deal with human history and remains - not fossils. You all actually got most of your information spot on, very well done! Btw, the ones that are more rusty are likely ones that have been exposed longer. Like anything containing iron, iron rusts once it's exposed to oxygen.

But it's all still human focused and not the kind of fossils that most folks would typically think of when they think of fossil (general understanding is typically "oh fossils are dinosaur bones." (Don't get me started on the fossil definitions freshmen undergrads try to give you; the level of understanding is extremely basic at best and usually incorrect.) And yes of course most sciences and academic fields in general these days are multidisciplinary and there is overlap, as there should be. But in the case of trying to correct a misconception to a nonsciencey audience, I chose to simply it to make it shorter and easier for people to understand. To talk about all the differences and explain each field would be paragraphs long, and way beyond necessary here.
Seriously, when Chris made the Indiana Jones joke, my only response was "but he's an archeologist, fossils are paleontology" and bam, his joke is ruined.

Nice video! You give some good practical tips for finding. Thanks! As for preparing in the end of the video, for the big ones: I would not remove all the rock around the partials, because it gives character to the piece. Cleaning and removing matrix from the top would be enough to me, but that's personal. I love the piece of rock with the many small ones in it. There are some pretty decent video's around on youtube how to prepare it and make the ammonites stand out of the matrix beautifully. Could become a wonderful showpiece 👍👍

Fantastic! I live in Wyoming USA, over 1,000 miles from the nearest ocean, and hunt ammonite, baculite, belemnite etc. on the plains and in the Black Hills. We're at 4 to 5,000' elevation but this area was once a great inland sea. Love seeing the perfect little pyrite ammys ... pyrite replacement here is very rare and ammonite is very uncommon compared to the common baculite and belemnite. Thanks so much for sharing this, I can't go hounding until the snow thaws so it was a nice vicarious treat for this rockhound

Yeah, it's like for hundreds of thousands of years, that spot was where ammonites went to die or something. Like just a mass euthanasia cove or something, in order for there to be all those countless fossils in such a small area. Somewhat morbid to think of >.>
@@fredd3.14 this is old sea bed that is now part of the landmass. So all these animals died at sea and sank to the bottom where they got covered in mud, sand etc and then more and more layers which get compressed and fossilized over millions of years. You can see in some of the clips all the different layers in the cliffs which literally represent millions of years of this process. Each layer will have different composition and different type of fossils.
This is such wholesome content for some reason. Something about being able to do something so chill together yet literally looking at stuff that is millions of years old!! I love you and Chris together!

Loved this! There's a neolithic burial chamber in Somerset called stoney Littleton which has a huge ammonite fossil in the entrance. Our prehistoric ancestors liked fossils too :)

This was my childhood! Not in the UK by the sea but in an abandoned quarry close to my house in Slovakia. It was blowing my mind, that I could find shells when my country doesn't even have the sea, nor it's anywhere close. I was obsessed. And now you have reminded me, just how fun it is. Need to go again when I have the chance. Btw. have you seen the movie Ammonite with Kate Winslet as Mary Anning? Probably not super historically correct but I really like it.

I liked the larger chunk with the scattered fossils you found near the beginning of the video. Puts their fissilization into context. You can imagine them lying on the sea floor and getting caught in some sort of debris flow freezing them in time.
So cool! We live next to the Devonian era rocks around the Shenandoah mountains and go looking for trilobites every now and then. Fossil shark teeth wash up at a beach nearby too
Oh how lovely! I grew up near Lyme and have a small pyrite ammonite (£2 coin sized) I found on the beach down there on my desk to this day. Chris calling a part of Dorset 'Devon' is giving me a small chuckle though.

@Sharmeleon Kimmeridge Bay is also great for rock pooling. Catch some crabs, fish, and sea anemones before releasing them back into the sea

Just a heads up to correct a common misconception: geologists and paleontologists are ones who look at and deal with fossils. Archaeologists deal with human history and remains - not fossils. You all actually got most of your information spot on, very well done! Btw, the ones that are more rusty are likely ones that have been exposed longer. Like anything containing iron, iron rusts once it's exposed to oxygen.

But it's all still human focused and not the kind of fossils that most folks would typically think of when they think of fossil (general understanding is typically "oh fossils are dinosaur bones." (Don't get me started on the fossil definitions freshmen undergrads try to give you; the level of understanding is extremely basic at best and usually incorrect.) And yes of course most sciences and academic fields in general these days are multidisciplinary and there is overlap, as there should be. But in the case of trying to correct a misconception to a nonsciencey audience, I chose to simply it to make it shorter and easier for people to understand. To talk about all the differences and explain each field would be paragraphs long, and way beyond necessary here.
Seriously, when Chris made the Indiana Jones joke, my only response was "but he's an archeologist, fossils are paleontology" and bam, his joke is ruined.

I would not remove all the rock around the partials, because it gives character to the piece. Cleaning and removing matrix from the top would be enough to me, but that's personal.
I love the piece of rock with the many small ones in it. There are some pretty decent video's around on youtube how to prepare it and make the ammonites stand out of the matrix beautifully. Could become a wonderful showpiece

Fantastic! I live in Wyoming USA, over 1,000 miles from the nearest ocean, and hunt ammonite, baculite, belemnite etc. on the plains and in the Black Hills. We're at 4 to 5,000' elevation but this area was once a great inland sea. Love seeing the perfect little pyrite ammys ... pyrite replacement here is very rare and ammonite is very uncommon compared to the common baculite and belemnite. Thanks so much for sharing this, I can't go hounding until the snow thaws so it was a nice vicarious treat for this rockhound

It's oddly fascinating and oddly horrifying to think there were that many of those things to be fossilized like that together in groups.
Yeah, it's like for hundreds of thousands of years, that spot was where ammonites went to die or something. Like just a mass euthanasia cove or something, in order for there to be all those countless fossils in such a small area. Somewhat morbid to think of >.>

to be fossilized, and to be found in one spot, it was most likely a massive flood event that buried them in sediment. (this is speculation not a fact)
@@fredd3.14 this is old sea bed that is now part of the landmass. So all these animals died at sea and sank to the bottom where they got covered in mud, sand etc and then more and more layers which get compressed and fossilized over millions of years. You can see in some of the clips all the different layers in the cliffs which literally represent millions of years of this process. Each layer will have different composition and different type of fossils.
This is such wholesome content for some reason. Something about being able to do something so chill together yet literally looking at stuff that is millions of years old!! I love you and Chris together!

Loved this! There's a neolithic burial chamber in Somerset called stoney Littleton which has a huge ammonite fossil in the entrance. Our prehistoric ancestors liked fossils too :)

This was my childhood! Not in the UK by the sea but in an abandoned quarry close to my house in Slovakia. It was blowing my mind, that I could find shells when my country doesn't even have the sea, nor it's anywhere close. I was obsessed. And now you have reminded me, just how fun it is. Need to go again when I have the chance.
Btw. have you seen the movie Ammonite with Kate Winslet as Mary Anning? Probably not super historically correct but I really like it.

I liked the larger chunk with the scattered fossils you found near the beginning of the video. Puts their fissilization into context. You can imagine them lying on the sea floor and getting caught in some sort of debris flow freezing them in time.

So cool! We live next to the Devonian era rocks around the Shenandoah mountains and go looking for trilobites every now and then. Fossil shark teeth wash up at a beach nearby too

Oh how lovely! I grew up near Lyme and have a small pyrite ammonite (£2 coin sized) I found on the beach down there on my desk to this day. Chris calling a part of Dorset 'Devon' is giving me a small chuckle though.
Now I can only imagine Chris hiding the ring and pretending to find an awesome fossil, calling Sharla and baboom, there's the ring :'D

This was such an interesting vlog. Me and my kids have collected so many rocks and fossils over the years. I actually prefer the ones that aren't whole in their natural state I think it makes them look more interesting.
