hey Sharla, I plan to visit Japan in the near future in spring of 2025. We are going in the sakura season for me and my future husband honeymoon. My question is, I'm wondering where your hostel home is? I don't remember the location of it and we have talked about visiting Osaka first. I don't think the hostel is close but I wanted to ask? Plans might change and where we would like to visit. Plus what do you recommend when visiting Osaka? what is the best location around japan to see the sakura trees?

Forreal, her videos are so calming and cozy. I get the same feeling watching these videos as I do when glancing in the window of a stranger's house. Maybe a weird comparison, but it's that feeling you get when you see a glimpse of someone else's normal life and routine, and it makes you feel like everything is okay, like the world and everyone in it is always moving along?

I would suggest inviting them over for dinner! Sharing food and stories is great way to bond, ask them about the property and sprinkle in a few questions/comments about specific areas you two want to renovate. Even cooking together, have them teach you how to cook their favorite dish, and you cook them yours. Then throw them a few gifts 😉

So A year ago I was fortunate enough to have a short stay at the Neko Neko Inn, and the area really did give me an appreciation for Tokyo I didn't have before. As someone who's always preferred more rural areas, it was a real treat to see that hidden side of Tokyo people often don't know about. I've lived in Kyoto for about a year and a half now, and I adore it. But, due to various complications with my health and debt, I have to go back to the USA for the foreseeable future. One day I'd love to come back to Japan, and as I watch this vlog here, seeing more of a side of Tokyo that I hadn't considered, maybe the next time will be there.
Anyways, so glad to see you so hyped up for your new life in Tokyo, surrounded by friends, and that the cats have taken to it so well! Looking forward to see what else the future brings you!

My mom always did the cucumber thing. Apparently, the stem side of the cucumber is bitter. The stuff that's removed is definitely bitter, so you could imagine that it makes a difference, but it's probably one of those things that's so subtle that you wouldn't notice unless you're looking for it or are especially sensitive to bitterness.

I am weirdly excited for you two living in Tokyo. ESPECIALLY Chris because whenever he talked about Tokyo in his videos, he always gave off the impression that he truly only thought of Tokyo as Shibuya - Shinjuku - Roppongi and nothing else. In his VLOG, he already seemed to realise that there's much more to the city than that and I hope you guys can check some of the areas west and east of the main wards. I've travelled Japan for a year and regularly stayed in and around Tokyo when I needed a break and there are some absolute gems out there!

The cucumber thing does work! It brings out the cottony leak, which is a very common fungal disease that affects cucumbers. It's not bad for you but it gives it that classic bitter taste. When you rub two pieces at the top or bottom together the rest of the leak comes out and it removes the bad after taste.

Because I was curious the evening face is a gourd that becomes Kanpyō. It’s used in sushi and noodles from what I could tell. From Wikipedia “Kanpyō (かんぴょう or 干瓢), sometimes romanized and pronounced kampyō, are dried shavings of Lagenaria siceraria var. hispida, a variety of calabash gourd. The gourd is known as yugao (夕顔) or fukube (フクベ) in Japanese.
Kanpyō is an ingredient in traditional Edo style Japanese cuisine. Cooked and flavored kanpyō is commonly used in futomaki sushi roll.”

I love つるし飾り, it’s one of my favorite Japanese traditional crafts and you can see some really beautiful ones during ひな祭り! The goldfish one you got is super cute and I hope the woman was able to sell all of her art! 🥰

In the US you can’t renovate rentals either unless it’s stated in a lease you can, personally I wouldn’t take a landlords word without writing and signing to make renovations so I don’t think it’s weird Japan landlords won’t let you either

My husband is Italian and his family also does that cucumber thing. t seems to work, because I tried a fresh cucumber from my mother-in-law's garden and it had a bitterness to it while the ones she'd prepared were so yummy.

Second skin tape is great. I found it from a tattoo but now use it daily to keep my fentanyl pain patches in place. It’s the best

  • @xlaurenisfine

I just got tattooed last week and my artist used the same "second skin" film. He applied one and gave me an extra, and he told me to keep the first one on for 24 hours, then take it off once its leaked all the ink and plasma and clean it up in the shower and replace it with the new one. Then, he said to leave it on for a few more days. This comment might be too late, but I def wouldn't leave the first one on more than 24 hours because all the gunk underneath will sit and could harbor bacteria. Hope it healed well in the end though!!

I got a tattoo done on my last day in Japan during my very first trip there in 2018. I still love it! I got it done at a tattoo shop in Ueno called Swallow Art (スワローアート). It’s still one of my favourite ones, even though I’ve got over 15 tattoos now. Such fond memories!
