    I believe the opposite to be true. SLOG is better for less than ideal lighting or high dynamic range situations like direct sunlight, and has the greatest flexibility. In order for you to get the best dynamic range you need to shoot at or close to native iso, so you messed up here, should have went to 12800 if you needed the extra exposure in camera. In 90% of color grading situation you want to start with a proper corrective LUT. It’s very misleading to tell people that SLOG has “off” colors. Also I can’t comprehend how your focus and white balance is off due to SLOG, use the Gamma Assist tool or a proper preview LUT in your monitor.
    I only shoot SLOG3 and am never turning back.

    There is an option in camera to turn on Gamma Assist which shows you an example of how it would look in REC709 or what it would look when you apply the SLOG3 lut from sony, I hardly use it but it’s useful for white balancing when you’re not sure.

  • @mjpeake1

    Almost every example seems to come down to operator error to me. Shooting in too high iso, not getting proper white balance on set, not nailing focus. these are pretty easy things to get right on set. Not knocking s cinetone. It’s an incredible profile. Since you were shooting alot of slow mo you could have easily just brought up your f stop to like f4 and over cranked the shutter a bit. If you are shooting more run and gun you have other Picture profiles for that such as S-Cinetone HLG3 or Cine 4.

    Are you using a gray card? You're supposed to over expose your middle gray by 1.7 - 2 stops. I was also having the noise issue when I first started using S-Log 3 but that helped a lot. And yeah, if I'm close to 10,000 ISO, it's better to just jump over to 12,600 ISO for the noise reduction. If you're run & gunning, just zoom into the subject and make sure it/they are 1.7 - 2 stops over exposed on your light meter. As for color, S-Log 3 automatically wrecks the skin tones every single time. Luckily, I found a good lut online for free that fixes that instantly. It's not perfect, I tend to add a bit of contrast to it, but as for skin tones, it always fixes them without having to make any tweaks. This is what I've learned from my time using S-Log 3 and I'd like to think my stuff looks good 🙃. I would also not recommend to shy away from this picture profile. It takes some getting used to but it's got potential

    I have a7SIII since more than a year and never used any profile aside from S-Cinetone. You can color grade that as well and tone it to your liking. SLog3 sellers on youtube try so hard to make S-Cinetone bad because it doesn't make them money. The dynamic range is pretty solid as well, extremely close to SLog3 and a polarizer/gradient filter will increase that, and probably a mist filter as well.

    I went through most of the comments and need to agree to always go for the 2nd (higher) ISO instead of selcting something around ISO 3200.
    On the other side, those ultra flat log profiles tend to have challenges in the lows by principle - and I see this with my Lumix S1H, too.
    Log-profiles are primarily superior in protecting the high lights from burning out - but, log curves also pull up a large portion of the darks that w/o log profile would come out of the camera as pure black. As the physical behavior of the sensor remains the same this automatically results in that nasty noise in the darks.
    Ultmimately, the overall exposure challenge remains: exposuing for the dark areas and risking burned out lights or vice versa.

    I can see your frustration. I feel like it sucks that you get so much grain once you pass 800 iso. What has worked for me is I honestly if I can leave my iso at 100 or below 800 I would shoot at 12800 which is the second base iso my videos have come out perfectly. I’ll soon be sharing that on my page but that and adding gamma assist to see the color result on screen while I’m shooting in slog 3 in camera. I also use an external monitor. Not a pro like you but it’s definitely helped me with my shots. I always keep an ND FILTER on and push the iso to 12800 to start. Hope that helps a little.

    it is a common misconception to believe that the LOG produce more noise, it only does so if you expose it the same way you would expose a REC709 or a CINETONE. Exposing LOG is a little bit different and i would recommend the use of tools such as waveform, this is a must have. Or else you cannot expose correctly your log.
    Also, try to use a monitor (a 5" if you cant carry around a 7") that will helps you to pull focus more precisely.
    Use also the monitor to apply a LUT while shooting, so you'll have a general idea of what the color/contrast will look like.
    The use of the LUT will also help you greatly with the focus pulling as the contast is how your eye judge what's in focus (it is not the color that helps, it is the contrast)

    3- only use iso 640 and iso 12800 (i know dont worry about it ) .

  • @ArcanePath360

    Many times my log footage looks worse than my old DSLR b cameras shooting at regular standard profiles, and I spend a tonne of time getting it to look the same as what came straight out of camera. I have given up using LUTs because they always mess up certain tones like reds, depending on the lighting or white balance. I now just use colourspace transforms and grade from this. But I am considering just using HDRPQ to get the dynamic range without the need for all the colour correction. LOG3 is good if you have high contrast and may want to correct the exposure, but if you nail the exposure in the camera in the first place, then there's really no point to it, since crushing your whites and blacks to keep all the info on a rec709 display just looks wrong anyway.

  • @bvisuals6295
    @bvisuals6295 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, It's a delicate profile and when using it you have to be so careful. I also found myself wrecking footage becouse of these mistakes... as people says, proper white balance has to be setted up in other profile and after that, always if neccesary even if using an nd filter, bumping to 12800 iso is a great thing. I like Scinetone but it's true that it doesn't have the same dinamic range.
    Anyway is a shame seeing that the camera has so much noise in lets say 2000iso. A little bit frustrating...

    Learning how the log profiles work would have helped in this situation. Pushing the ISO was a mistake! Signal-to-noise ratio is something to keep in mind at all time. Keep the native log iso to maximise your dynamic range. If you need more light, open your aperture or increase your shutter speed. Remove the ISO from the « triangle ». The real conclusion is don’t shoot in log if you don’t understand what it does !

    When you choose log profile everything is off ….. that is why you use gamma assist or external monitor with a LUT. Slog 3 with phantom LUTs is the easiest if exposed at +1.7 to +2.0. Easy peasy ! And you lock the WB.

    S-Log 3 is one of the best features of the A7SIII. You can use a monitor or the built-in gamma correction tool to get a preview of your final image. Dynamic range on this sensor is one of the main reasons to buy the camera, if you're not taking advantage of that you can save money by shooting on a much more affordable camera with a built in colour profile.

    You should put on good monitor. Slog3 is absolutely the best profile. S-cinetone looks amateur because you're limiting dynamic range so much. It's definitely not affecting focusing. Colors are always slightly off on log profiles of every brand, but its super easy to fix. Unfortunately Sony A7s3 is bad camera in terms of noise because of the that huge jump between 800 and 12800, but if you expose it with proper tools it looks good. I think your bad experience is caused by not understanding specifics of log profile

    In regards to the dual native ISO.
    You state that you would like it to kick in alot lower. This is understandable; this is a common use case.
    However, the S in a7siii stands for sensitivity. I personally love where it kicks in. 12800 iso allows me to get a significantly different looking shot from the 640 iso. I can close down my aperture to capture a larger focus depth and sunstars. The features of the a7siii fit my needs really well.
    It sounds like the a7iv would fit into your work flow alot more seamlessly. You might want to consider selling your a7siii and buying the a7iv. That would solve alot of your workflow issues that you mentioned. The noise would be more fine (less grainy) because of the 36MP sensor. The second iso kicks in at 3200iso.
    Just some thoughts 🤷🏻‍♂️ :-) wish you the best of luck with your work flow issues.

Also the footage is noisy bc you probably under exposed. Happened to me too. You gotta over expose by 1.7 - 2 stops. Which is counter intuitive but that's just how you shoot SLog3. Also have to be aware of base iso I believe the a7siii is 640 minimum.

  • @heynow2880
    @heynow2880 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The reason your ISO 3000 is noisy is cause anything over 640 to 12800 is garbage. Get a ND filter and shoot at 12,800. Also having it clean up at 12,800 is good because you can now shoot Slog3 at night. You might be better off with the A74
    Also make sure to overexpose keeping it at 1.7
    This is for best results

    Sounds like you just were too underexposed for SLOG. It's harder to pull the blacks up vs. pulling down the highlights. It's a fine line when it comes down to exposure, but overall it's the best option when looking for the most freedom for color. Also, SLOG3 has nothing to do with your white balance. As a DP, you should have a general idea of color temps. It's about setting yourself up for success in post while in production, and maybe get yourself an external monitor (if you haven't by now) and I would practice some more. To me, it sounds like you just need more time with it. Of course I'm seeing this video 7 months later, so I'm sure you have learned quite a bit since this video. Either way, keep creating, and learning. Great vid man. Best of luck!

    Come on man, iso800 and 12800 are the native isos. You should always shoot at those iso, the guarantee the best DR, and overall image quality. Sometime i go up to 1600 but then this is 12800, ith eventually some filters. This is the same on FX6, and actually when shooting in EI mode you have no choice than those 2 ISOs. Also, you can use gamma curve assistance on screen to check if your WB isn't too bad when you're not sure, and the peaking is very good. Also, having a little ninja, or shogun screen is great. Your arguments are not very founded. cheers !

    Maybe all this is stuff you eventually have changed your mind about over the past year?
    About 2 minutes in and I'm really confused at how you're saying S-Log3 has a lot of noise. Try and shoot a standard profile at 3000 ISO and there will be noise, albeit more of it is crushed into the shadows because of the increased contrast.
    S-Log3 is meant to be shot at its 'native' ISOs of 640/800 and 12800 (depending on camera). At both those ISOs it's incredibly clean, depending on the scene, and you can always add contrast or lower the shadows to crush the noise.
    Getting the tones right seems to be pretty easy if you get the white balance correct, and use a LUT that favors skin tones (like the Phantom LUTs).
    I'd never, ever monitor in Log, as Log is a completely different color space. The color primaries aren't going to be in the right place.
    Anyway, how's it going for you now? Still not using S-Log3?

    I had the same problem! I shot in really low light and exposed normal at 0.0…BIG MISTAKE! In low light you have to over expose the footage between +1.0 to +2.0 because in post when you go to brighten the footage and it’s exposed normal at 0.0 it will become grainy. It cleaned it right up over exposing the footage while shooting!

      @@MomentumProductions1992 So S-log doesn't work for you because of user error(s). Has nothing to do with S-Log3. Set your custom wb, focus should be easy to check and confirm (so have an evf, or monitor whatever works for you) and know gain responses etc etc. Pretty basic stuff for a camera operator. Be more critical. Don't say: ow in a controlled situation you can work with it.... quality is method of working and a single operator can also work in S-log3.

    I Love S-Log3, tried S-Cinetone and was dissapointed as you loose about 2 stops of dynamic range. To me it’s nearly a diffenence like RAW and JPG. If you shoot S-Log, blacks should never be black. Always check your histogram to make shure you use the whole dynamic range, if you expose right, the image will look way too bright (but isnt‘t clipping!)

  • @TedTremendous
    @TedTremendous 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    For ISO you want to either shoot native at 640 or at 12800, in between you will get noise that pros notice but normal users do not. For pro clients that are fancy pants with marketers/video ppl they might notice it but your footage is so damn good I'd bet they'd forgive you lol.
    This also seems like issues I had when initially working with a GH5 at a shoot and I didnt have everything dialed in correctly. What happened was I had banding from Fluorescent lights in a room and the footage was essentially useless. Needless to say, this freaked me out enough to sell my GH5 at the time which I soon regretted. The truth was it was more my own fault than the cameras. I think the same is here. When talking about color issues, you can use the gamma assist feature to see colors using SLOG3 using a basic LUT on screen so you get an idea of what the colors will look like.
    The good news here is that the SONY has the color to pull or modify which many do not. So you could recover or adjust which is awesome. I know it was a pain but be thankful for that and it is a testament to how good the SLOG actually is.
    The white balance is a known issue and one I do not like. SONY NEEDS FIRMWARE UPDATE for Custom White Balance and custom modes. It still does not work in 2022 wow! You have to go into film mode to set white balance then go back to your custom modes or save it to new profile of custom mode which seems dumb to me. You should be able to just set custom white balance in custom mode. This is very important!! Thanks for the video!

    I feel bad for your experience. Most of this is mainly just not understanding Slog3 and how to use it properly.
    Use gamma assist, ETTR 1.7 stops and bring back down in post (gerald undone has a video on this), you should have a white balance card on you and start using it. Use base ISO and if you need to use a quality variable nd filter to make sure you're always hitting base ISO.
    If you don't care about getting the most dynamic range, then forget everything I just said and use S Cinetone. Lol

    The A7S iii has to dual ISO, 640 & 12800 .. If you can't shoot in 640 don't go beyond 1000 ISO, you have to jump to IS0 12800 and use a ND filter to cut down the Exposure, especially in low light situations where the slightest amount of noise can be exaggerated is you go beyond 1000 ISO

    You're doing something wrong because with slog 3 properly exposed (custom white balance and expose a gray card then add 1.5 to 1.7 stops) it has much better DR and little or no noise.

  • @elvarj7431

    When shooting S-log 3 on the a7siii, NEVER EVER EVER shoot at ISO's between 1600-12800. If you need to go above 1600, go to 12800 and stop down your aperature to expose. ANY ISO between 1600-12800 will be noise af and basicly unusable. That said, I do agree 95% of people should not use slog 3 and rather opt for some other log profile or S-Cinetone.

Slog 3 is an easy picture profile to shoot with.

  • @alexkooistra

    Also in "running and gunning" you need to know what you are doing. A good camera operator knows how to set proper whitebalance, knows how to focus and what profile to use. I hear a novice talking about mistakes he makes and then blaming it on s-log. A good and seasoned operator can perfectly use s-log 3 (he will most likely as a starter in low light switch to the second native iso, have proper focus technique and knows how to properly set a whitebalance). I feel a lot of people think that "running and gunning" is an excuse for not setting custom WB or be critical to every aspect of filmmaking. Being a one man band is very very hard work. But this kind of titles and advice is something I would advice to skip. It's all user error.

    A bit late to the party here, but this video is absolutely incorrect. Have shot thousands of hours on the A7SIII, FX6, FS7 all in SLOG3. The issue you are experiencing is due to a lack of understanding how to use the tools correctly. As you state in a comment below "I don't have the patience for all that" - so you simply just don't have time or don't want to understand how to use the tools correctly. That's fine - shoot S-Cinetone, or REC709. But it's really not complex at all, and frankly if you're a professional working today, these are things you should find the patience and time to learn and understand. You don't need to be a colour expert to grade SLOG3, it takes literally seconds to build a very simple S curve and add saturation. Do it every single day in post (I don't use LUTs). Done and done. Simple rule of thumb - light bright, grade dark. Just a really basic simple principal of exposure and knowing where the noise floor is and how to avoid it. There's a reason in CineEI on the FX6, for example, you have 800 and 12800 as your ISO options. Those are the options that work correctly with SLOG3 to minimize noise and maximize dynamic range. You apply the same principals to the A7SIII - 640/12800 is where you live to get the cleanest image in SLOG3. If you're under exposed at 640, go to 12800 and ND down to where you need to be. Pretty simple.

  • @push.6901
    @push.6901 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Never shoot above ISO640 in Slog-3. The noise is horrible, if you need more light, use more light. 12800 is ok if you are ok with loss of detail.
