These guys were scary good 1980/1981. One of the greatest bands in the world. The issue is that the 81 material, Jaco had to learn on stage with the sheet music, because the self entitled WR album was released in 82. The problem with that is, management didn't tell Joe & Wayne that they had to go on tour to support the new music (which they had already did the previous year in 81). The issue that arose was Jaco also putting out his Word of Mouth LP late in 81, and going on his own tour in 1982. This in turn led to Jaco and Pete having to depart from WR. By 1982, Joe and Wayne had to recruit a new rhythm section to go on tour or they would have to pay the $75K in fines. Usually Zawinul would have WR record the album in studio first then support the album with a tour, they decided to do it backwards here and it backfired on Jaco in hindsight.
Jaco knew Joe would never fire him so he took advantage of it and did anything he wanted. Jaco took them to the next level when they were just a college band. It sucks Jaco had a mental breakdown in 1984. He was already nuts but the pressures of being a bandleader, WB dropping him, and having 4 kids to support sent him over the edge
@@PhuckHue2 yep, he basically financed/bought two of the houses for both of his wives, but then he ends up homeless. It tears me up. Guys like him and Shawn Lane couldn’t capitalize on their talents monetarily like Miles did. But Jaco never really left the band, it’s just the timing and the. Fact that Jaco was the best bass player with only that one album out. Meanwhile guys like Stanley Clarke had put out like 6 or 7 albums by 1980. So Jaco felt like a sideman with all that music he needed to release, while WR kept having their European and Asian tours never allowing Jaco enough time to do his solo projects. Jaco on the other hand should have stayed with Epic/ Columbia records. The executives, would have been like, “this is the bassist who is with WR and will be making more money for us,”, but he went to the other side where it was greener, but not for the long haul. If he would have stayed with CBS , they would have given him more musical freedom to make records. Your point is right as well.
@@flame-sky7148 you’ve got this ass about face. Saying WRs European and Asian tours didn’t leave Jaco enough time is bullshit. They didn’t exist to help Jaco Pastorius to build his career. It was Joe and Wayne’s band. They did not need Jaco to make great music. They made that b4 and after him. If he didn’t like his commitment to the band he could have fucked off. Weather Report made Jaco famous, not the other way around. He was a sideman, hired and fired. A great one, but a sideman. His story is a tragic one but it is a tragedy of mental health, nothing more or less. His performance here is unprofessional and unacceptable.

@@flame-sky7148 haha. I have energy enough to post and fuck too, don’t worry. My musings aren’t meant to be a personal attack and I think you probably broadly share my point of view, that there needs to be a correction about Jacos history, he was not the main actor in the WR story. Peter with his Maynard Ferguson T-shirt on....I saw Peter in that amazing band led by maestro Maynard with so many top level horn players in tow and keyboard extraordinaire Biff Hannon....Joe called Maynard seeing if he knew a drummer to take Alex Acuna's place....off Peter went to be in Weather Report.....there's a beautiful story of Joe and Maynard involving a Green Card for Austrian Joe....
This must be the time Pastorius was drunk and awol on half the tune ? There's no bass on half of this and he seems unaware of where to come in or not. But it's a great great performance because the rest of the bans rescue it.
It's not all jaco... no one knows the tune yet at this point. There are form errors, bad changes, etc. Everyone tries to hold it together as best as they can.
Grew up with this, what was so posed to do next. I was a little kid, Jaco was not from this world back then no one could touched him with speed and genius of writing, Stanley Clarke came close but on rare moments I heard off speed WOW and wow and more wow.
I mean what was I supposed to do next but be there best fan for live. Skills like this and any other weather report player that ever joined was simply the best ever.
@@nickandthecrisis Thats not Victor playing its a bass synth loop. Victor said in an interview he can't play it. Jaco can actually play it but around this time he started drinking and doing drugs so he was out of it. I play bass and its a very difficult bass line that can give you tendonitis. I can play it perfectly for maybe a minute. When I was younger I could almost play it to the end
@Steve-mp7by you're right - the Hampshire College 1982 concert sounds like Victor playing the outro on the bridge pickup... he does it well but the speed is very difficult
Erskine on fire! Controlled wildness
my favorite band ever....
They sound good...
Peter Erskine is killing it!
I'm not going to get into the recording cause it is what it is? I can hear what's going on..
still love this rhythm section!!

Relentless bass drum
I saw Weather Report 2 years later in Hamburg, great concert...pity that nearly all "Mr. is gone"...only music survived

Damn! Jaco is fuckin up! If I were joe I'd be pissed! No wonder he had that little black kid(aka Marcus miller) on the line....
No way Marcus could play the outro to this song at that speed. Jaco was the only one who could do it
Little black kid? Didn't know MAGA had the sense to appreciate WR. Ignorant.
