guy was lying through his teeth the whole time. constantly contradicting himself. he definitely is flipping the truck you could tell when you opened the door for the air compressor that the whole utility body has been re-sprayed to cover up all the surface rust the bed had. especially with the fact that you showed up and it has more miles than advertised AND the speedo doesnt work, this screams auction buy flip
Every issue brought up to the guy there and he automatically has the "is there?" Response tells me he knew every issue the truck had lmao his stories were all over the place too
Usually a red flag when i hear “ i don’t know” alot or “ the owner knows all that but out of town“ especially when its clear things have been touched or replaced from the looks of it right before they posted it. Yeah usually you don’t want to sell something thats worn out or broken but sometimes people hide things thinking you’re not one of those who look at everything. It’s also a red flag when the mileage is not the same as they advertised.
If everyhing else checks out, I wouldn't be afraid of the miles. I have a 2000 Excursion with the 7.3 and it's got 378,000, and still going strong. Pulls anything.
Yup! It’s going to be my home and building it to work for a future wife and kids. Hopefully that truck will hit the 1,000,000 mile mark! Unless I get the itch to put a Cummins in it😂
@@ExpeditionRanchTV I picked up a 97 ram 3500 with a 5.9 and 5 speed for similar reasons, picked mine up with about 178k and currently working to fix up the truck and hopefully run her to the million-mile mark pulling a 34' utility trailer converted to a full live in toy hauler. Also, can confirm the nv4500's also hate 3rd, and once I can source a G56 I'm going to swap that in instead.
For future use: When someone picks you up that you do not know and they make you uncomfortable just mumble the following - "What ARE the odds that there would be two serial killers in the same car?"
Be careful with that type of sales person, the good thing: it is content for your channel, but for the rest of people it is a bunch of corrosion with mechanical issues. Good luck 👍🏼
As a fellow 7.3 owner, the salesman kinda lied. The speedo does not read off the rear end. It reads off the front ABS wheel speed sensors. Unplug them and watch the speedo not work, also the clamp on the turbo is not factory but it is fine, its a V-band style with a hose clamp end, I would leave it be.
Nitpicking the hell out of that truck. A running driving 7.3 Powerstroke with a 6 speed and 4x4 with that low of rust is $15-20,000 all day long in southern Indiana. Add a few extra grand for that big of a service bed and the truck being a f550 with only 178k miles. That truck with all of those options and being that clean is a unicorn.
It is super clean. I have no clue why he was making such a big deal about the mileage. I have never personally seen a 7.3 under 250k, especially one with 0 rust, zf6, AND 4wd. 12 is plenty plenty fair for that rig
@@thomasholldorf9196 I understand the issue with the mileage being off from what was advertised but everything else was just ridiculous. As you said it is clean. Not to mention it has the unicorn of drivetrains.
If you're a buyer why wouldn't you nitpick it? Especially if the guy seems a little off. Even if it is a unicorn best not to seem too interested when you go to negotiate.
@@ckotterman it’s one thing to point out a few issues to drive the price down a little bit he took it way too damn far. Complaining about surface rust on the damn frame that every truck in the world would have after just a few good rains. There is a difference between trying to get a better price and damn near insulting the guy. Then continued to complain after already buying the truck. Acting like he paid too much. He stole the truck at that price.
Amazing job going through this truck! A salesman nightmare when the buyer knows what he’s looking at. The story was a bunch of bs and I’m sure he is just flipping the truck and there’s no dad. But none to less you got a good deal and you know what you got.
I am not sure if the odometer will stop working when speed sensor is out. Some cars rely on abs sensor. But maybe it was stuck on 178k mile while they used it for long time.
My guess is the leak is from the steel feed lines that come up through valley. Replaced those on my truck. Not bad if you are prepared for it. On the side of the road.... not so much. Look forward to the next video!
From my experience working in a F truck specialist shop here in Australia. With the ZF6 we usually see the cooler lines being damaged or torn off on worksites and all of the transmission oil gets pumped out until the driver realises and by then the gear set is normally toasted. Can't wait to follow this build.
Glade to see u got the 550 u wanted just a few things to note u may have know this but the ad said it was a 2000 that truck is a early build known as a early 99 model prob a build date of 1998 so smaller turbo smaller injectors 15deg hpop the decals on the fenders insted of the doors is the other dead giveaway. the 4x4 light not working is prob just the switch very common also miles is no biggie of maintance has been kept up ive seen these trucks well into 800k and still going strong my personal one has over 400k. look forward to seeing the build to come, shes going to be a beast when your done for sure.
Crazy you noticed it’s a 99 from the video! I didn’t add that part of the video because it was getting too long but yes, I caught that about 1/2 way through the inspection when there was no cruise control light😂 still considering if we are going to do bigger turbo and injectors!
Im in the same boat looking at older trucks man it sucks .... nobody is honest , everything changes once you are there looking at it and asking about things that have clearly been altered and its always a brother uncle or a "friend" that knows more but is unfortunately "out of town " . My best transaction to date was about 8 years ago i messaged a guy in new Hampshire about a 9ft plow i said i have the cash if this is how you describe it ..... drove there it was exactly like the description and what he said i gave him the money and took the plow shook hands and drove home !!! Great guy
I had a 2001 F550 with a ZF5. I put a Detroit Locker and 3:91 gears in it. With 225s it cruised 70 mph at 2000 rpm. FYI. Currently running E Series cutaway ambos 1990(IDI) , 1995 Quigley (PSD, needs mech work) , and a 2003 Quigley PSD. 2003 is my daily driver/tow vehicle . That clean oil pan is RARE! They rust out back east.
That dude was a liar. He said 2x that he didn’t drive a stick so he didn’t know how it drove. 5 mins later he says he drove it a few times and so did his brother. I think he lied about even owning it. I doubt his dad was even involved in it. I’d a got it for $8k.
I’d guess he was selling it for someone. The “dad” was a cover story. Probably did this to get around “sell by dealer”. He said “they” had a generator in it. If it was my dads it would be we or he. He has a guy / mechanic that looked at it…. There are more signs. Lots of I don’t knows. It doesn’t change anything though. You’re a knowledgeable buyer and did your own inspection. Looking forward to seeing what you build!
They had the 2000 truck since 1999 quite accurate I know you are able to get the car a couple months before the actual year of release. Didn't though many people would reply tho.
I’m from Billings mt welcome to our city and glad you found that truck I saw it on marketplace and thought that would be good for a truck life build and here you are buying it lol much love and love your videos
That dude trying to sell that truck don’t have a clue. Reminds me of Bernie Mac in Transformers. You don’t have to have an answer for everything. Somebody shifted it too hard one time did not make that boot split
There's a 1999 f450 crew cab 7.3l 4X4 6 speed for $10,800 in my area, it has 298,000 miles. Owner started out at $12k and within 2 weeks jumped down $1,200. If the other trucks I'm looking at sell and this one is still here, I'm gonna buy it. Now I'm not gonna turn it into a camper, but still the mileage doesn't worry me. I know it will last till 400k, but since I plan to swap pistons out for Speed of air pistons, I might as well do a rebuild. If I wasn't going to do anything, but drive it, my only concern is with wear items and the interior. Is the clutch still good, is the seat worn out, how are the bushings, how are the breaks? Not one bit of me is concerned with engine wear or trans issues, maybe that's arrogance on my end, but I've seen enough 7.3l's need rebuilds and they take a lot of abuse. You got a deal on that truck, 178,000 is like less than 100k on a Honda civic, If it was beaten by every worker from the previous owner, there was not enough time to accumulate any amount of damage that you would be worried about, because you would have seen it during your inspection. If any thing brings that truck out of commission, it'll be wiring, the rear axel or injectors, and you plan to upgrade that anyway. You would have seen smoke out of the tail pipe if there was any serious injector issues, oiling issues. If there was a bearing getting ready to spin, you would've heard it or noticed a lack of oil on the dipstick. Your drive back to CA will tell you all you need to know, if everything goes well, that truck is mint. Any problems that occur will be small. The worst thing I can foresee is the rear diff, make sure it has enough fluid in it for the trip. You'd hate to destroy the rear axel, but since it's 4X4 you could remove the rear driveshaft and have a FWD F550 until you get that fixed. I said all that just to see the fuel bowl leak at the end, well I hope you got that sorted. Potential upgrade is a fuel bowl delete with a fass lift pump. It removes the fuel bowl and replaces it with a regulated return, and the fass fuel pump/ lift pump will give you headroom for more power in the future and maintains the fuel filter, but relocates it and adds a fuel and water separator.
That service body must really vary in price per location. I am in North Dakota and compared to most service bodies and steel flatbeds around here the rust on that thing is minimal. Stuff like that rots so fast up here as it seems like most of the time the prep work on paint is terrible. Here I would easily see that service body going for $5k+ to the right person.
First time watching your channel. Subbed right away! I follow Ambition Strikes, and they did an awesome truck camper build a few years ago. I guess TH-cam remembered I enjoyed that and recommended your channel. Best of luck with the build! Can’t wait to see more content.
I would've walked and said no when it came to the mileage. If they're not honest from the start, my gut would've told me no. I have 380 on my 7.3, even though 178k isn't anything for these trucks. Good luck with the build.
Speedo not working means odometer doesn't work as well so mileage is lower than actually on it. Speed sensor is in transmission not axle. The one in axle is abs tone wheel and sensor. Transmission cross member new bolts probably means trans was rebuilt which is why it's tighter then normal for 200k
Don’t be afraid to negotiate more as well, also look into services like LemonSquad to do a PPI (mare other companies as well) where you can have a mechanic go out and inspect the car for a few hundred bucks, will save you insane amounts of time and money and give you a leg up when negotiating as well
Some how your video shown up in my feed, i been looking for a older truck now i want a f550 truck similar with manual, to use as a daily driver not for over landing but common stuff
I’ll tell ya one thing about work trucks like this, not only are the employees rough on the transmission but the big this is idle time. When I worked for John Deere our service trucks ran from sun up to sun down and that is super rough on trucks especially diesels
This rig would be awesome to see with a Buckstop bumpers single rear wheel conversion lift package, plus a nice front winch bumper and grille guard housing a 20,000 lb. winch. Beef up the axles too, with maybe some E-lockers. Great truck! 👍
Great content! I don’t know anything about the particulars of trucks and still found this video very interesting. Good job👏 Great editing with the perfect amount of suspense built in!
I've got 91 with the 7.3 IDI in it pushing over 500,000 mi I've got a 97 F550 that's my work truck It's pushing about 450,000 on it Those are very very good reliable engines you don't need to turbocharge them yeah it's nice for the extra power but they're great engines
With a sale as important as this as I’ve sold vehicles myself, I best be ready for questions. This “son” wasn’t at all prepared nor did his “dad” give enough effort to front load him with answers. Service paperwork? And the fact that it was advertised as 150K no matter how good a unicorn this may seem, they disrespected you or surely didn’t give a damn. Your heart really wants something but your head’s screaming at you
First time viewer of your channel. I'll have to check out some more videos of yours. Looking forward to the next video, I know these 7.3's pretty well and the top of the fuel filter housing can get stupid and crack. People that work on them can sometime beat the hell out of the lid and ruin it. Ultimately I think you did pretty good with this truck at $10k. The only 7.3 truck I have left now is an old E350 van. It now has close to 200k on it and still runs like a Swiss watch. I bet if you do a complete change of fluids this thing will be good for a LOT of miles. The rebuilt trans is pretty nice, the people before you probably drove this truck like they stole it, or were just hard on it. I'm sure you got a new clutch in there as well. At work we have a few trucks like this still and they see a LOT of idle hours. That would be the only thing I'd be remotely concerned, but if it was idled up, I bet everything is okay. I also think you might be able to sell that bed for $1,000. Just clean it good. Looking forward to more content.
That motor looked and sounded good I'm still not sure what the big deal about 178,000 Mi is if it was taken care of because it was a company or fleet vehicle there is no issue is there a chance that it could be a big pile of crap possibly I mean after all it is a Ford.
Everyone can talk all tough in the comments and say what they woulda said to the guy but in reality nobody wants to be a jerk when you have put the time and money into flying out to buy the truck .really tight spot to be in and they know they more or less gotcha if you have made the trip that far and are out of your element . Also the rebuilt trans would be a big selling point for me .... him trying to deny it happened until you found the rebuild tag makes absolutely no sense to me lol
Coming from someone that lives in Billings, unfortunately you've defiantly met one of the many scam artist in this town when it comes to the used car business. Still excited to see what you do with it! Most likely an old oil field rig left over from North Dakota.
@ExpeditionRanchTV I do not know them. I've just heard rumors about the individual's. They typically flip anything and everything they can get it seems like.
Unfortunately, it seems like used dealers up here will "scam" a bunch of people until their name gets blasted and then start up under another company name.
I would love a truck like that would be perfect to live in while I build a house on my 40 acres. Broke right now but I need some stamps! I've been looking for a manual F350 everywhere and I can't even find one, inquired about 3 or 4 different ones listed as manuals even out of state ones and all were automatic it's pretty discouraging I have to get an automatic. I reeeeaaaalllllyy wanted a manual. I didn't find one 3 years ago because I wanted my wife to drive it and she never does less than a dozen times in 3 years. Also been trying to get a 7.3 but those are also few and far inbetween mostly 6.0's for sale out there. I love this truck as is even with all the issues I need a crewcab but man is it sexy. Maybe you could get $500 for the toolbox and you said it as I was typing lol.
I think this guy bought it from auction and did a quick tractor white paint job on the bed it’s a decent truck he definitely left alot out of the pictures
Debating putting an S135 under my E350 Series Cutaway. Currenly Dana 70. I would like better brakes. I have access to my old set up under an F550...3:91 w/ Detroit Locker. Id have to change out front to a 3:91. I mostly gravel road and highway. I run 19.5 rail rims , so its singled out. Cant afford the Red Barn Custom rims i want $800-1000 each. Look up Red Barn Customs in Michigan. They do awesome work. I already upgraded the rear springs and mounts to OBS Superduty (cast iron)
I own both the 7.3 Super Duty F550 (ZF6 4x4 165") and F450 trucks, and besides the Dana S135 in the F550, there is no difference. From what I understand, if you have a F550 with the Dana 80, the only difference is the actual axle shafts. IF you have the S135, they were only offered in 4.88 to 5.30 gear ratio, limiting its usability without a hard to find gear swap.
@ExpeditionRanchTV do those 41" tires have the same load rating as the normal 19.5's? Because id love to put some bigger tires on it instead of regearing or getting a gearvendors transmission. Id also like to keep my stock eaton truetrac limited slip in tbe rear.
My red flag would be how long has the speedometer/odometer not been working? If it's been out for a while would make sense why the ZF6 has been remaned.
I think it was a fair deal. Typical used car dealer tactics..... Didn't know alot the truck but tried to play it off. My thought on the transmission is they may have not kept up with maintenance. Sits for along time seal gets a leak. Then jump in it and go. Burn up bearings. Bad deal on the fuel leak. Rubber gets dry rot ..

Stuff like that rots so fast up here as it seems like most of the time the prep work on paint is terrible. Here I would easily see that service body going for $5k+ to the right person.
This will be very interesting, I’m building a 97 f350 cclb into a overlander so I’m curious to see what you do with this
First time watching your channel. Subbed right away! I follow Ambition Strikes, and they did an awesome truck camper build a few years ago. I guess TH-cam remembered I enjoyed that and recommended your channel. Best of luck with the build! Can’t wait to see more content.
That looks like an old TA service truck, pry ran ruff
Billings is beautiful, the airport is awesome.
I have a 2001 F350 4x4 dually 7.3, ZF6 speed. A geaqt vehicle and a stump puller.Onward!
We are proud of your dedication to your determination and ambition. Thank you.
Agree. However, the odometer was working fine and continuing to add miles. I don’t think I would’ve bought the truck if it didn’t work.
@@ExpeditionRanchTV then it's not the speed sensor that's is at fault. It's the speedo itself
Awesome platform.Looking forward to the build. Thanks for sharing and taking us along
I’ll tell ya one thing about work trucks like this, not only are the employees rough on the transmission but the big this is idle time. When I worked for John Deere our service trucks ran from sun up to sun down and that is super rough on trucks especially diesels
Brother you are good at inspecting finding up fitting and acting to get a great deal! Props from a car guy to a car guy!!! Well played
Just found your channel with this video! You definitely have a lot of knowledge on the 7.3. Cant wait for the other videos! All the best
Great move! Hope that leak is not to bad!
that truck sounds good and it looks like it shits good too, i'd take it!
Great channel dude, I'm in ! In today's truck market, and your knowledge and mechanical abilities, you got it for a good price.
This rig would be awesome to see with a Buckstop bumpers single rear wheel conversion lift package, plus a nice front winch bumper and grille guard housing a 20,000 lb. winch. Beef up the axles too, with maybe some E-lockers. Great truck! 👍
We are reaching out to Buckstop soon🤞
Beef up the axles ??? Huh? Its an S135 and a Dana60. No upgrading necessary.
Great content! I don’t know anything about the particulars of trucks and still found this video very interesting. Good job👏 Great editing with the perfect amount of suspense built in!
Very cool tread lightly and BRC integration!
so glad I found your channel! this was awesome and cannot wait to see what you do with this beast!
I've got 91 with the 7.3 IDI in it pushing over 500,000 mi I've got a 97 F550 that's my work truck It's pushing about 450,000 on it Those are very very good reliable engines you don't need to turbocharge them yeah it's nice for the extra power but they're great engines
You didn't bring a cool scanner to check for codes and code history?
How about a Carfax report before you got there just to see if anything pops up??
Concerning your ambulance build, how did you tackle the wiring , did you take it all out?
Love the truck
I have a 1989 f350 super duty 10 lug 5 speed
Sounds like a cool truck!!
We, here in Nashville, Tennessee, wish you a blessed and safe 4th of July, James.
That's an awesome idea, ambulance for a camper.... For a diesel that's not much at all
Anytime a salesman says “is it?” When you point out something is broken/wrong is always a good sign
Especially in a high pitched voice
Do you know these guys? GML financial?
@ExpeditionRanchTV I do not know them. I've just heard rumors about the individual's. They typically flip anything and everything they can get it seems like.
Unfortunately, it seems like used dealers up here will "scam" a bunch of people until their name gets blasted and then start up under another company name.
151000miles is low for any diesel even 180000 so that would be plenty low enough to give away but your plan for it is better I think.
I was not expecting the leak 😮😮
You will laugh so hard when you find out why it did that!
@@ExpeditionRanchTV I’m gonna guess a broken injector!?!
My fuel filter leaked like that a few times still don't know why it started or stopped but still carry a spare filter till this day.
Too the right person that contractor box can sell for a grand 5 to 10 grand new
I think you’re pretty close!
some of them box's sell for 4 to 5k in Canada
This camper is sick
1k for the box if you put time, a little money and a little sweat into it. Someone in the universe wants it but they will have to find you.
I think this guy bought it from auction and did a quick tractor white paint job on the bed it’s a decent truck he definitely left alot out of the pictures
What an awesome adventure!
Scam seller knew nothing about the truck, but manages to wipe 200k of the odometer.
How long was the listing up? if the seller put it up at 150k a long time ago and then it was used some more but 28k extra is a little much.
27:41 I was thinking 700 but that’s got to be someone that really wants it bad
25 year old truck is gonna have some "gremlins"
Almost looks like it just had a new clutch( broken shifter boot, new cross member bolts, new clutch slave).
151k miles!? Thats a damn brand new truck. I think 250k miles starts to break it in. those 7.3 are almost bulletproof slow.
It has 4.88s which should match a 41” tire pretty well! However driving cross country with 30” tires was 55mph the whole way😂
@ExpeditionRanchTV do those 41" tires have the same load rating as the normal 19.5's? Because id love to put some bigger tires on it instead of regearing or getting a gearvendors transmission. Id also like to keep my stock eaton truetrac limited slip in tbe rear.
that is a early 1999. im guessing it was built in 1998. one of the first super dutys ever
You know, most diesels don't get broken in until they hit about 300 thousand miles
That’s definitely just a saying they just last longer than gas engines generally the break in is with 2 oil changes than regular oil change intervals.
My red flag would be how long has the speedometer/odometer not been working? If it's been out for a while would make sense why the ZF6 has been remaned.
Odometer still worked!
Your videos are so awesome was so excited to see this one had come out
Thank you!!
The ending has me waiting for the next video
Oh it’s a fun one!😂
@@ExpeditionRanchTV You never disappoint!
4:00 He says doesnt know how to drive stick but at 13:40 he just drove it the other day
How did California get tags for that?
What's the price you paid?
Man, I got so nervous when I seen the truck rolling backwards haha
How do you enter the camper giveaway?
Just head over to Expeditionranch.com!
Hell yeah brother!!
so stoked!
Correct me if im wrong but a faulty vss means miles aren’t correct 🤷🏼♂️ or is it different for analog odometer?
The odometer still worked🤷🏽♂️
I think it was a fair deal.
Typical used car dealer tactics..... Didn't know alot the truck but tried to play it off.
My thought on the transmission is they may have not kept up with maintenance. Sits for along time seal gets a leak. Then jump in it and go. Burn up bearings.
Bad deal on the fuel leak. Rubber gets dry rot ..
