- It's road trip time! Warmer temperatures are melting the snow and its raining and naturally that means its time to hit the road. Join me as I head out to Tahquamenon falls with a friend for a hike and lunch at the Tahquamenon Falls Brewery & Pub. It's always a good day when time with friends, nature and french fries are involved.

I found this and enjoyed it. I am a lifelong MIchigander until I moved to the NW desert of AZ. for family health reasons. The Falls are my favorite place to visit. My first visit was 1956 at age 9. I took the ferry to the UP and saw the bridge in the midst of being built. My next visit was in 1966 just before shipping out for Vietnam. I took my family to see it in 1971 and camped there. I saw it again in 86, 88, 90, with different women I was dating after my first divorce, and again in 93 and 99 and 03. My last visit was in Jan of 06 with my now wife. I had always wanted to see it in the Winter and it was awesome. I hope you enjoy the northern lights as much as I have. After we move back to Michigan I plan to visit them again. Jim

In ‘72 three of us went there and you could get right up to it at the Top and climb down to look under the falls. We sat in the river on top of the falls. We walked behind the falls, Underneath the falling water, almost all the way, to the other side. That’s no longer allowed.

Went there in winter of 2017. Snowed like 18 inches over a couple of days. All trails were open and stairs were not shoveled. Was hard to get down and up the 99 stairs but the view was so worth it.
I bet that was a pretty sight!

@ I feel the same. The Keweenaw is supposed to get a good amount of lake effect snow starting Wednesday. We shall see! Let’s hope the snow does return soon. It’s so beautiful when there’s fresh snow. ❄️💙

Nice video, great camera work. Was at that spot on Oct. 20, 2024. Cool to see how much snow was on the ground. I was there to view the falls on April 19, 1995 , and the trail had 4’ of snow packed down. Took some great photos of the falls and ice formations .

Hello marie, what a awesome view of the falls. Looks like a good place for lunch. You have 2 really good cars. Just maintain them and you will be good. Do your homework if your looking at a subaru. I just repaired my aunts forester. I replace both lower control arms and she has engine oil consumption problems. Well it looked like a great day to get out to view the falls. That's one of my favorite places and a lot less crowded this time of year! The Whitefish Point lighthouse is a good one to visit. I like the Whitefish Point Marina too. There are a couple really old fishing boats on shore that make a cool picture. Josh Gates Expedition Unknown show had a couple episodes in that area and one scene was at that marina. My buddy and his girlfriend were there at the falls today and sent me a pic from there this morning. He has a huge white pickup truck but I didn't see it from your video. Great way to spend a day, thanks for sharing Marie!
I have heard good things about whitefish point, I will have to check it out, I heard that is a good spot to see the northern lights too! I will make sure to look for the old fishing boats, I bet that is a nice picture! thats so cool that your friends where there today too, we maybe just missed crossing paths, thanks for the comment!

Thank you for the road trip. Last time I was there was quite a while ago in the winter, We walked the snow covered stairs in our snowmobile riding gear to the bottom, it wasn't easy but we still had fun and I will always remember it.
I am glad it brought back good memories, that does sound like a fun time, but not easy with all that heavy gear
Beautiful day trip. So many to be had in the UP. In the Western side you have Bond Falls, Canyon Falls and the Agate Tressel gorge. All could be seen in a day! Thank you for sharing your adventure.

Beautiful area ,I'am a nature lover an have been studying & watching live stream Eagle nests for 12yrs They have their babies in January February , have you seen any in your area
Eagles are gorgeous, I haven't seen many but I keep my eye out, I see lots of ravens and crows and blue seagulls, I do hear a lot of owl at night, would love to see one of those too. I will look when Im at the lake to see if I see any eagles and they really are amazing, they stay in their nests to keep their eggs warm/babies alive through the harshest weather events.

Beautiful area and park, the falls is breathtaking. This area is similar latitude as northern Ontario and looks much like my area near Lake Nipissing, thank you for posting this video, makes me appreciate how beautiful Michigan can be.

The snow has melted away, lots of rain and flooding as the ground is still frozen. It will be a slow start to ice fishing season on Lake Nipissing, next week the deep freeze will be back.
@@brianmorrison8652 our ground isn't frozen yet, thats very cool you ice fish! hope it is back very soon so. you can get back to it!
I just go out ice fishing a few times, only when I know the ice is very thick, I also keep honey bees and in March I tap maple trees to make my own syrup. There must be some maple trees around there, I have many, but is alot of effort to get the syrup.

Love the video. So great to see a spot that I've loved going to many times. There are some nice falls if you head to the Munising, Marquette area.
yes you are correct plus there is pictured rocks by Munising too, Marquette has awesome hikes too
@marieintheUP Spent about a month up in the Munising area this past summer. Spent a good part of that at Black Rock jumping off the cliff and swimming. Rock hunting is awesome in that area.

Was there in Feb of 2015, winter of polar vortex. The snow was so deep at the lower falls that when standing by a trash can the bubble top for the can was at your feet. The lower falls were completely froze over, just looked like snow drifts.
At the upper falls all the trails where open, even the stair cases, and could only see less than half of the water falling because of the ice, it was beautiful. Hope that someday you get to experience the same.

I haven’t been up to Paradise, Michigan, in a number of years maybe I will go up to the UP this coming summer. I wonder if the famous mailbox is still up that way that’s 10 feet up and has been used in the winter months…..

The mailbox is between Paradise, Michigan, and Whitefish Point Michigan it would be on the east side of the road as you are headed to Whitefish point

You are very welcome … I used to come home on leave from the Marines and I would go up to the UP with some buddies of mine from school and we would go snowmobiling in Munising and in Paradise by some logging trails I think
Went there on my honeymoon and locked my keys in the car, had to wait like 3 hours for someone to come open it out in the middle of nowhere. Nice place to be stuck though. Need to get back up there sometime, we're from the Kalamazoo area in the LP. Love the vids, keep it up!

When there is more snow, more of the trails are open and they have a snowshoe/cross country trail open there. We did a really cool snowshoe hike there a few years ago where the trail was lit at night by oil lamps. It was pretty awesome.
I would love to see it all lit up by the oil lamps, that sounds so dreamy!

When the view of Tahquamenon Falls came up in your video, the first thing that popped into my mind was "why is the water that color?" I had to smile when the screen went black and my question popped up followed by the answer! Vacationed in the late 60s and and early 70s at my grandparent's cottage on a lake in far NW Wisconsin. The water was brown, too and I was told it was due to all the Tamarack tree logs and stumps in the lake left by extensive lumbering in the area in the early 1900s.
That’s a great point about the tamarack trees, it’s incredible how the past influences the environment we see today. I am glad to hear that I was able to answer your question about the color of the falls right when you were thinking about it!
It's all the copper in the soil and rocks makes the falls look the color of tea.

@@Ceba-pw8hkthe color of tea comes from tannins which are present in the plant matter. Rocks aren’t capable of producing tannins, rocks are not organic.
The dead trees are basically acting like a steeping tea, in which those same tannins are staining the water. It’s not related to non-organic matter like rocks & minerals.

You should go back in March when it's partially frozen over,, I personally think it's a better to view them. Upper platform might be open then too.
I think they are doing some extensive electrical upgrades this year and so more things are closed, good idea on the views later in the season, I would like to see more ice formations, thanks for the tip

Such a beautiful place! If you enjoyed this, head to Munising Mi and do a 3-5 day hike any time, but especially during the thaw! Waterfalls all over the place! My favorite is Chapel Falls. Just out of this world breath-taking! Thank you for sharing your journey. Makes me miss home

Hello from across Lake Superior in Ontario. On a clear day I can pick up WUPY 101 on my radio. Great video. Nice to see what that other side of Lake Superior looks like. It was raining here on Saturday. We don't get nearly the amount of snow that you get.

I was at pictured rocks right before this first snow hit in Nov, I had the place all to myself and it was really nice, thats great you have a cabin in GM!
I’m thinking about starting my next chapter in Michigan as well. I have some ideas for the NW area of the lower peninsula. I’m going to start scouting this summer.

Falls are beautiful. Too bad the stairs to the lower are not open. Its a workout going up and down the stairs with snowmobile gear on!! (and i'm in shape!LOL). Maybe they are changing it around? Been there many times via snowmobile.... to the Falls Brewery also. I agree, great food! You have to go there when its really cold. Awesome ice formations! Supposed to get really cold in a week or two.
oh my, I agree, the stairs are a lot on a normal day but with snow/ice and in snowmobile gear, forget it! I do want to see it with lots of ice formations! it is going to be cooling down and snowing again very soon
That's worth the trip. Good, the brewery AT the state park is still there. Though the beer tastes like it was brewed with that water. There's a mariner's museum there as well.
Do a water falls tour in the spring when things start to melt.
agree on being happy the brewery is still there and that it is still open year round! havent tried their beer but the food is really good but your comment made me smile and chuckle about the brewed with the tannin water from the falls lol. I need to check out the museum too- we will go back!

That's such a beautiful spot, I wish they didn't have such a kerfuffle flying drones over it but I understand why. Great place to hike in the fall

of for sure, in all seasons, the hiking trails, the camping, the restaurant, the fall colors, there are so many reasons to keep going back in all the seasons! more videos to come, we want to snowshoe there since they have groomed trails and winter is just getting started!

Tahquamenon Falls is one of my favorite places on earth!
I have a Honda odyssey and live in Wisconsin 4 years ago I spent the money on Goodyear snow tires and had them put on there own rims and have them changed every season. I’m 71 and always thought all season tires were good enough till I started using snows. I would never spend another winter without them. The sense of security is amazing especially with a Honda.
if I get out into back roads eventually then i will get some snow tires for sure!
Nice little journey! I watch Gone with the Snowdogs on you tube . They are in Alpena Mi. & they have 3 huskies they take on hikes all over the place. I've seen them where you were. The water has always looked discolored like that !
I will have to check that channel out, sounds like something I would like too. We saw a dog sled team when we were driving back from the falls but weren't recording, it was really cool to see!
To add to your summer list, another nice place to visit that alot overlook is Fayette State Park on the end of the Garden Penninsula is an old iron smelting ghost town. It's a but out of the way out of the way but noce area. Had family that were caretakers there long ago. My grandmonth would tell stories of how her mother would walk down to Lake Michigan and cry as she missed her homeland in Germany.
Kitch-iti-kipi (The Big Spring) near Manistique is another good stop along the way.

hi, we still have snow, we have one more day of melt and rain, so we will see how much we end up with, but some will still be around and then it is supposed to snow the next day. you got the rain too in NY, maybe it will snow soon again up there?
@@marieintheUP Yes it will I am sure. We are getting closer to being on the "RIGHT" side of winter. Snow storms in February are easier to accept than snow storms in November when you have along winter ahead of us. February is at least close to spring.

No need to replace your cars. Snow tires instead of even the best all season tires will make an unbelievable difference. Well worth the investment.

hi it`s me the pets if you get a chance at night when you are relaxing and sit and watch the RUDAN BROTHERS ...Just to give you an idea what i been through in my life ..I lived in Sudbury Ontario Canada where the winter months were burial its been in some days it would go to -40 or more so please look into getting your roof and walls insulated with foam ..Its killing me watch you work so hard 💗💗

Beautiful scenery with nice visuals. Describe the smells that you experienced there? Pine trees? Did the water from falls have any smell to them? P.S. You don't have to describe the smell of the "yellow snow." 🤣
thanks, I agree it is beautiful scenery, the nickname is root beer falls but it doesn't smell like root beer, I didn't notice any smells, just fresh air and the snow and cold smells clean!
Amber color of water is called Tannic water. It’s from decaying organics that leach into the river. It’s not toxic but will stain clothes and has a bitter taste. I’m left northern Michigan probably 30 years ago as my business grew. I’m puzzled though with your story; is family from the U.P.? Funny since I’ve never heard of anyone actually moving up to the northern 1/3rd of Michigan full time. Typically it’s a vacation home situation. Our family still has acreage in the Trout Lake area that we have owned for over 100 years.
We are on island lake. Trout is a few miles up 51 s. From us! Red crown resort, and the golf course.😉
@@tom-ehill2713 that’s awesome. It’s sad so many of generations old families have picked up and moved on from the UP but I get it since I was one of them since my business required it for survival. My kids and grand kids do head up to spend a couple weeks for hunting season.

I have been to the falls many times, but only stopped once during the Thanksgiving break to see them. Paradise looks really wet right now! So sad to see all the snow melting will it rain at warm temperatures.
its been raining every day now, third day in a row and supposed to have two more rainy warm days, then get cold and snow. most of the snow is melting quickly. It was raining all day at the falls but it was still fun, but I will go back when its colder and there is more snow and no rain lol

When you have time here's some other places to visit: Houghton = Michigan Tech during Winter Carnival Week, Ambassador Inn for a sub sandwich. Then Hancock and Quincy Mine. McCain State Park in the summer. Calumet and old abandoned mining towns, Copper Harbor, etc. Lots to do that's for sure.

This is the park on the river in Alex Bay by the castle. Keewaydin State Park is on the St. Lawrence River, offering excellent boating, fishing and, during the winter, ice fishing and cross-country skiing. The sheltered marina provides dock space for seasonal and transient visitors. Overlooking the river are 48 campsites. The park's terrain includes steep, rocky outcroppings between the campsites and the shoreline, providing vantage points for watching the ocean-going vessels traversing the river. The park also has a swimming pool and picnic areas.

yes, it really impacts the people who live here and depend on the winter tourism too, i was sad to see the brewery and pup lost business due to the snow melting. but thankfully it is supposed to cool down and snow in two days
Next time when my brother and I are at Grand Rapids. Michigan, we will have to go to that waterfall. It's not far from there. And there's another park right by Grand Rapids. Michigan has lots of waterfalls along the lake shore.

What an odd request. He lists an issue he’s having, while also mentioning that he’s currently implementing the solution to said issue. What’s the complaint, you’ve already solved your problem with functionality that’s already baked in, via the pause button.
@@koobs4549 in all fairness I have asked for feedback on how to make my videos better, I have been getting more comments from others as well about the size of some of the fonts and that they would like it to be on screen longer as well, and he always provides helpful advice and comments, I understand what you are saying as well, yes he can pause it, but its good for me to know that it is not showing up great for all so I can try to work on it. you both are very kind and I appreciate the comments!
