    I can explain you exactly the thought process behind the naming.
    - We need a cool name for the company!
    - How about Senator? Sounds magnificent.
    - Awesome!

      I agree fully to this one. And president would most likely be the top of their line, like a president of a company or a society, who's signature is behind many important documents.

    They are great pens! I have 4 of them and the 3 with gold nibs have bounce that others do not. there is a special edition that has a grey barrel and comes with a unique 3 sided wood box. 1 thing that I have found is that if you remove the nib to clean the inside the piston may stop working. Otherwise, it is an outstanding pen.

    • @WaskiSquirrel
      @WaskiSquirrel  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Funny that the nib and piston would be related in any way. But, yes, these are great pens. I haven't tried the steel nibs, but some like them less. Interesting about the box. I know that some of these were sold in spectacular boxes.

    Isn't "Senator President" just the pen brand and the model? I could be wrong, but it seems no different to me than a pen that was stamped "Montblanc President", or "Pilot Metropolitan".
    Anyway, a great find and I really hope it lives up to your hopes after more testing.
    You know, pen size or pen weight doesn't seem to make much different to me. I love pens the size of the Metropolitan, and I love pens the size of the Montblac 149. Or the Namiki Emperor, for that matter. The Jinhao 159 doesn't strike me as heavy at all. It's just big. I love writing with a very light pens. I always keep a big bundle of the Pilot Varsity to use as giveaway pens, and to throw into camping/fishing bags that might no be used for long periods because the Varsity never, ever seems to dry up. Anyway, once or twice a year I'll get on a Varsity kick and use one as a daily writer until it runs dry.
    But I also have two pens that weigh one hundred and twenty-five grams capped or, if I remember correctly, about ninety grams uncapped. This is heavy by any standard, but I love writing with them, even for hours at a time.
    I don't know why I'm so indifferent to size and weight of pens. I remember being surprised that this is considered unusual, but it's the way I've been since I bought my first fountain pen when I was eight years old, though I certainly didn't have any pens that weighed four and a half ounces at that age.

      I agree on the name. But my US bias means I see two government offices. Of course, a Platinum President didn't bother me because it mixed a precious metal with a government office.

  • @herrkeks8509

    Ähm... as a German. A president is called Präsident in Germany and is a leader of a company of some sort or the “Bundespräsident”, similar to the president of the US, but the German one doesn’t have a whole lot of power, his tasks are more representative. The parliament (Parlament -> Bundestag) has more power. A senator is also called a “Senator” and the senate is called “Senat”. But senates aren’t that common, especially not in the government. Germany is divided into 16 “Bundesländer”, similar to the states of the US, just less independent. And there are a few Bundesländer that basically are just a single town (Stadt), so called “Stadtstaaten” (Berlin, Hansestadt Hamburg, Hansestadt Bremen), and these governments have senates. But all in all Senatoren/senators aren’t extremely common in Germany, but it is pretty much the same thing. Präsident/president is much more commen (e.g. Bundespräsident, Präsident of a company).
    (Hansestadt -> Hanseatic town) just a few towns that collaborated in a “Hanse” (Hansa) a long time ago. Mostly town at the shore or big rivers that where heavily involved into trading.
    Too long didn’t read:
    Senator: Exists, means the same, very uncommon
    Präsident: Exists (leader of a company or Germany (Bundespräsident similar to the US president, but less power, more representative tasks), means the same

    • @WaskiSquirrel
      @WaskiSquirrel  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for the detail. I suppose my struggle is looking for a meaning in the full name while they're really saying "Senator pen's best pen." Somewhat like Platinum President really is not referencing the government office or the precious metal.
      But I'll be back on this when I review the Senator Regent in a few weeks...

    • @herrkeks8509
      @herrkeks8509 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’m glad that I was able to help a little bit and just by the way, as you mention it, “Regent” translates to ruler. Regent is a word that doesn’t get a lot of use these day. I don’t even know when I heard it the last time.
      Opel (German car manufacturer, the old ones are a lot nicer than the new ones in my opinion, anything 90s and younger is definitively not my cup of tea) has a similar nomenclature... They had models like the Diplomat, Admiral, Senator, Kapitän (Captain). And those where generally speaking there high end cars. They even had a Kadett (cadet), the other ones where pre 90s, I think. The Kadett was their entry level car for quite a long time (also a lot of pre 90s version of this car), before the Corsa (maybe short for Korsar (corsair), very sea themed naming I notice... They even had a Manta) came out in the 90s, which they still have in their product line until now. Damn they even had a Commodore! I think that’s how they made clear where you were in their line up. I never really thought about this, because I’m not really into Opel.

    Great review, I was particularly interested in the ink and relieved when reading the comments to find that it would generally be considered a drier ink. My extremely strong preference is to steer clear of any pen that gushes ink and I even experienced a bit of a "yuck" moment when you started writing and the ink was just lying in pools on the paper. Mind you, I knew what was coming the minute I saw the B on the nib! One of the things I love about fountain pens and the community is that all the varieties of pen and ink tastes can be happily accommodated.

    • @WaskiSquirrel

    Just. Wow. That pen must be at the blingiest end of your collection I bet, with you not being much of a bling guy. It looks amazing in the box, it writes beautifully with a stubbish wet line. I'm not fond of logos on things, and don't like a lot of embellishments, but this is a great pen - you got a great deal! [and, yeah, much nicer than a MB]
    Well done, I love your enjoyment of this, as always... thanks for sharing

      @@WaskiSquirrel I think the Senator being the manufacturer and calling the pen President & ending up with Senator President would only be confusing in the US , Senators in europe to my knowledge do not exist although the word means the same. President again is different in europe its often the president of a company. Perhaps a less confusing way to put it in the US would by The President model by Senator. :-)

      I think you explained that perfectly. That is how I see it at least.
      Pen companies do enjoy unintentionally confusing us sometimes ☺️. Specifically things like the Pilot Falcon that doesn’t have a Falcon nib, and MB calling their 146 the Diplomat - until the company Diplomat took offence (or at least that’s what I had read). It’s a good job us fountain pen crazies can understand them 😉

  • @Nojii1

    Hey Waski!
    I am not just saying this, it really reminds me of my MB 149 in size, style and the fact all MB nibs over M are stub like.
    I have a 2016 Rose Gold 149 in B and I have to say I don’t like it very much 😕. Personal preference of course but I very rarely use it and I sometimes grow angry at having spent so much money for it (had it new from MB)
    I prefer your Senator and it seems a bit of an ink hose. Whoa there cowboy 😉
    With the right ink you could be sheening for the championships ☺️

    Jason, I might suggest that the two titles ~ 'Senator' & 'President' are in no way linked. Senator (obviously) is the brand name; the pen is a 'President' model: The incongruity is simply, that, & I doubt that when Senator issued this pen, such a 'marriage' of names was inadvertent - tho' clearly utilised to appear impressive, status-driven - with a modicum of hyperbole thrown in for good measure. It's a beautiful looking instrument, & writes very nicely; I look forward to a fuller review. There is (without doubt) a discernible resemblance to the M-B 149. I cannot say that I really like company logo brands on pens, tho' I do own a skinny Pelikan from the '70's with the Volkswagen name atop the cap, & it's minimalist, so not bothersome. That 4001 Violet ink is outstanding - I'll have to order a bottle. Wonderful first impressions - thank you :D

    Great looking pen that certainly echoes the Montblanc 159. I believe that a couple of years ago Montblanc produced a limited edition pen honoring JFK that they called the President. Your pen seems to be older than that. Otherwise I would have guessed that Senator was following Montblanc's lead.

    If it's from the cold war (East Germany?) their economics worked differently. While eastern block products were often the butt of jokes about quality, it is also true that products could also be made with higher quality than in the west. This is because the state controlled the price of everything, so materials could be much cheaper, probably labour, and even the product itself if they so desired.
    I recently bought a Jh 159 and I really like it. Smooth, wet, bouncy nib and solid feel. I believe Chinese pen makers in general are getting much better.

    • @Nojii1
      @Nojii1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Andrew,
      You are quite right in what you say, some Pelikan (specifically the 4001 line) do tend to be on the dry side.
      Confusingly the 4001 Turquoise isn’t actually that bad and I would almost say is in the centre, but the Blue/Black which actually has small amounts of Iron Gall is much drier and tends to tar the rest with the same label. I have never used purple to my shame so I can not comment there. Oddly the blue-black I am lead to understand isn’t easy to get in the US as it has an ingredient I don’t think they approve of, but that might have been relaxed now.
      Pelikan’s premium Edelstein line suffer from no such dryness and all have excellent flow regardless of colour.

    • @DealerBoy

  • @Allthough

    That looks like a lovely pen! I think you are being a little unfair to Montblanc by assuming that the MB149 weighs as much as a Jinhao 159. They are not similar pens. The MB is a resin pen, the Jinhao is brass. I have a 149 from the 1980's. It weighs 31g, has an ebonite feed and writes like a dream. I understand that the modern 149's use a brass screw drive mechanism for the piston that does add a little weight, but they still don't achieve the brick-like heft of the dreaded Jinhao. Granted, they are expensive. But, I still don't understand why they are so frequently dismissed as somehow not being worthy of consideration.

    • @WaskiSquirrel
      @WaskiSquirrel  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't mean to imply the weight of the Jinhao and Montblanc were the same. I merely meant the size, which I think is fair.
      I don't know why the Montblanc doesn't appeal to me. I own some vintage pens of the brand and like them very much. For some reason, the MB149 just doesn't appeal to me aside from a general curiosity to try it.

    What interests me is the story behind this pen and the inscription. This is wide open to speculation. Presumably given to a high ranking official of a Ukraine Coal Mining company. Was this a gift for retirement or long service? If so, you would expect the name of the person to be engraved on the barrel. Then I wonder why the original owner parted company with the pen and how did it end up in the United States? I don't suppose we will ever know.

      @WaskiSquirrel  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Vintage pens come with a story. This one isn't very old, but definitely has a story. That I got it with the original packaging and even the tag on the clip suggests that the recipient of the gift never used it. Or maybe they never got the gift?
