    When draining the left leg with the cartridge fork, does all of the fluid drain out or only some of it?

    • @TechnMoto
      @TechnMoto  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Carl Kamin to get most of the fluid out you can pump the fork by pushing the forks down and up a few times. I don’t believe you’ll ever get everything completely out. If your concerned with some being left in there just measure what you get out and put back in the same amount. That will be more of accurate measurement but I have never done it myself. I just drain it, pump the folks get as much out as I can and then fill

      Techn' Moto thank you! My concern is making sure I put in the correct amount... I gather you are measuring what drains out and matching that amount with new fluid that you’re putting in...

      Thats probably the best way to do it to be safe but then again do we know if the guy or gal who originally filled the forks did it correct the first time? I know this I have used this method for years now and have never had a problem with my forks. I should have clarified a lot of this when I made the video but you should know this was the very first video I ever made for youtube and I was a bit nervous when making it but I am glad I did cause it has helped many folks even if I have to explain it when someone asks me this type of info. But hey if I have the time I don't mind responding. I'll tell ya, this is much easier than taking those forks off just to change oil. if you don't mind I will be pinning this comment to hopefully help others who may have the same questions. Good luck on the fork oil change.

    Just subbed. Thanks for the videos. Do you know what model years Harley used the cartridge in the left leg?

    Great video Thanks...If you fill from the Drain hole, does that mean you really don't have to take the Top Caps Off. Just Drain, Pump up and down, drain some more. Get the tire off the ground and Fill from the Drain hole?. Could do both sides?? Thanks

    • @TechnMoto
      @TechnMoto  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ron Koyonagi I never tried it like that. Would assume you need the caps off to get air in or out while filling and or draining. Don’t think it will work. If you try it like that let me know if it works for you.

    Good idea and nice short to the point video. Wondering if you've had any issues with leaking from the fork seals since doing this method of bottom up. In theory, it shouldn't matter since the oil moves back and forth regularly anyway. Just curious if there's any issues.

    • @TechnMoto
      @TechnMoto  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have not had any issues. As a matter of fact I have never had to change a fork seal and this bike has over 62K on it now. They now have a tool that does this exact thing www.fixmyhog.com/video/jims-fork-filling-tool-009668/ and I've been doing this for years before they came up with the idea

      @@TechnMoto Awesome. Thanks for the reply. I try to do as much on my own within the limits of the tools i have and appreciate any input. You have 62K on your ride. Book says change fork oil every 50K. How often do you? I'm not a fan of the 50K mark. I recently purchased a 13 year old garage queen Ultra Classic with 3800 miles. Been doing the requisite maintenance as if it was ridden. New fluids, lube, tightening crap (lost a slip on...haha), new wheels, and checking seals. Despite the age and low miles, it's been well taken care of and is in great shape, but needs the TLC.

      @@charlescolarusso3801 your going to laugh but I do all my fluids at least once a year and change the engine oil as needed. on these bikes check your shifter linkage and the mounts to the left side bag and muffler

      @@TechnMoto I had a 06 Ultra I bagged deer on a few years ago. I had lost my shifter linkage on the highway about a week after I bought it (used), luckily I had a bandana I was able to do some roadside wrenching with and was only .5 mile from a HD dealership.

    • @TechnMoto
      @TechnMoto  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Had a similar problem with mine on a touring trip. This is a common problem with the ultra- shifter bearings wear out which cause a lot of vibration which works the screw out from linkage.

    I need to change mine out to a heavier weight, the front suspension isn't adjustable and it's way too soft. The front end dives way too much under braking.

    • @TechnMoto
      @TechnMoto  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      On my bike i tried a heavier weight and that made my front end to dam hard so i went back to the ten weight. try it then you know whether or not you like it better, its only oil lol

    Why can only one of the two forks be filled from the top and is this common to all ultra classic models (2010)?

    • @TechnMoto
      @TechnMoto  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kevin Courneya this bike has a cartridge fork and a conventional fork. The cartridge fork is the one that can’t be filled with ease from the top. Look in the owners manual and see what your bike has. I’m not sure on newer models

    • @TechnMoto
      @TechnMoto  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Technically you could fill the fork from the top but it will be a slow process and you will need help to work the fork up and down to get the fluid past the valve up top. But again it is doable I’ve done it in the past. This process is just much faster.

      @@TechnMoto Is it easy to keep the fork oil from leaking out of the left side fork with cartridge when you are injecting the fork oil in the drain plug? I ask because i just now today installed chrome fork sliders on my 2003 Ultra Classic and when i put the oil in the right side fork i removed the top fork plug and put the fork oil in and it when in very easy with good flow. When i tried to put the fork oil in the left side that has the cartridge inside and it kept backing out and running out the top so i stopped. I came in and found your video and was pleased to see it. Also it does not say anything in my service manual about the difficulty putting the fork oil from the top on the left side with cartridge, it really just tells you how to rebuild the whole fork. the manual is not detailed about installing fork oil. Thanks for your sharing your video I am going to try your method. I'll be happy to see your reply on this.. Thanks again!

    • @TechnMoto
      @TechnMoto  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matt Belter what I did was use my finger to keep the oil from coming back out while I refilled the syringe. The time to add oil would have been while you had the forks apart but this will work too although it won’t be as accurate but close. Measure out the amount of oil needed and inject it into the drain hole. Keep a clean cup under neath the drain so you’ll know exactly how much you lose in between filling the syringe. Then add that back in. I would add a bit more because when you go to put the plug back in you will lose a small amount. If your quick it should not be much at all. Like I said doing it like this is not a perfect science but will work. I’ve been doing it for years and never had a problem. It does however save you a ton of work and time. Good luck

      @@TechnMoto I agree, I am going to give it a try. I din't take the whole fork assembly off my m/c. I just took the sliders off the the fork tubes while the forks were still on the ultra Classic. I'm glad you posted this video, I could not get the fork oil to go in the top on the cartridge side, I guess if i put it in real slow it would go but i think that would take hours... thanks again! Have you ever put the fork oil in the top on the cartridge side? how long did it take?
