That makes sense. I am having the hardest time at slow speeds. I think I am riding the clutch (like in a truck) when I am keeping the RPMs up. The fact my bike is 515 plus pounds kind of gets to me. But I see now I can leverage the weight difference with the friction zone... interesting. Thank you

New rider here.... I have having trouble doing smooth stops on a 2015 Road King, honestly I was getting discouraged and second guessing myself. I did drop it once at a stop sign. I came across your channel and this video helped me Tremendously. This morning I practiced slow controlled stops with preloading and felt a world of difference, it gave me a BIG confidence booster. Thank you so much for ALL the practical and effective information and tips. I am very grateful and can't wait to keep practicing, I'm 48 and have never rode a motorcycle until 2 months ago, already took the motorcycle course at my local community college , but your channel has helped so much more. Thanks again sir and thank you for your service. Keep rocking those videos.

When you said "why would I use the throttle if i'm coming to a stop", that's been me since i've owned my bike for the past month. This video literally made the whole "power does not equal speed" thing click for me and i'm more comfortable using the throttle to keep the power up when I feel like i'm losing balance. Now Exercise 2 feels like a breeze and my stops feels so much smoother and controlled. Proud to be a V.I.Preloader because the amount/qaulity of info you give is amazing! Now i'm on to trust and believe!

From a former LEO to another, you are a stand up guy. So, your videos are clear, concise and you have a gift for teaching. I've seen other videos that recommend once you are down to walking speed, to forget the rear brake and use the front only. I tried it today on my Street Glide and did not like it. I've always used the rear once say 5-8 mph to zero, but I've never, in 30 years of riding been told about the friction zone until you're stopped. It's brilliant. Thank you!

Sir. I'm a new rider living and working in the middle east. I just bought my motorcycle a few weeks ago. And I went for my fourth practice this morning. I've been watching dozens of TH-cam videos, especially your videos. The word "preload" has become locked into my memory and I hear your words when I go out for a practice. This morning was my first car park practice. (They're not easy to find here where I live) I practiced my u-turns and got it right the first time I attempted because of your video instructions. It's not 100% perfect, but I'll get there. Thank you, sir. Best wishes, Cal. Sultane of Oman.

Concerns practice: Every time I take my bike out for a ride I either begin the ride with practice in a nearby parking lot or end my ride with practice in that same parking lot. I make very few exceptions ... because since I began doing this, my enjoyment and confidence while riding my bike has increased tremendously. No longer hesitant and scared to stop and start... and I just keep practicing stops, starts, turns, figure 8s, swerves and such ... thank you so much. I ride a 2016 Indian Roadmaster...

Will here from the UK. I ride a BMW 1250GS, pretty tall and heavy and to be honest coming to standstill has been somewhat anxiety inducing.
I watched this video and thought I'll give this a go. I went to a local school carpark and wow I cannot believe the difference. On my way home I was willing traffic lights to change to red so I could stop lol. Even slow crawling feels like a non-event now.
I also tried your pulling away technique and again it feels so much more confidence inspiring. Not had the courage to let the bike start to fall a little yet though lol.
With these two techniques I will feel so much more confident arriving and leaving the biker cafes :)

The last motorcycle I owned was a 1984 Honda Magna V65 that I rode in the early 90's... so it's been a while. My wife and I just recently purchased an Indian Springfield. I was so confident when I was young as I spent a lot of time on two wheels. I started on dirt bikes as a kid and worked my way up to bigger bikes. Well now over 25 years later and equipped with 25+ years of Safe Tractor Trailer Driving; and witnessing many horrible accidents on the road I want to do this the right way. I'm taking my time getting comfortable with the bike and I intend to do my fair share of parking lot practice. Thanks for your service with N.Y.P.D. and thanks for the videos that you make.

I live in Florida, and have a 2014 Yamaha Raider. The thing is not that I fear larger bikes, or heavier. The thing is that I sold my bike back in 2009 because my wife was pregnant with my only son. He is now 13 years old. And I couldn't pass up the deal I got on my bike, so I found myself once again on a monster!!! Lol. I knew that I was out of practice so I started watching your training videos and started using what you were teaching! I found a basic riders course, participated and passed, then started practicing every chance I had. Do I feel like the boss?? Most of the time.....but I'm still learning how to be totally in charge!!! I've said this before, but again, thank you so much for what you do to help us out here to be competent enough to begin to really enjoy our motorcycles!!! God bless you Sir!!!

Being a 5' female, I've had my challenges with my bike. Last year I traded in my 250cc Yamaha for a Indian Scout 60. My driveway also has it's challenges and I'm forever jockeying around vehicles for one reason or another. I had the biggest epiphany this year when I attempted to duck walk my bike off the lawn into the driveway (which is very uneven, love your lawn btw) and had a tip over. Why? Because I had no power, I didn't even have the key in it! I have to wear 2.5" boot heals to (almost) comfortably flat foot, once a tire is on a bump, I can no longer touch the ground. Now, no matter what, the bike is ON and I'm feathering that clutch LIKE A BOSS (well, trying like a boss!). I'm pretty sure this epiphany happened right about the time I discovered your videos so I'm giving you all the credit. Keep up the great work, you rock.

Sorry about the length of this post.
Robert, I stumbled onto your channel and I have to say it's the best slow speed motorcycle instruction I've ever seen and you're the best instructor I've seen. Your positive reinforcement and attitude in your practice sessions is outstanding.
That said, I don't keep my right foot on the rear brake when I'm stopped, especially on an incline or decline. Here's why: I ride a Triumph Rocket III Touring. I don't know if you've ridden one but, if not, to give you and idea - when the Rocket is parked next to an HD, the HD suddenly looks very small. When I ride a full-dressed HD, it feels tiny to me after riding the Rocket. It's weight is about the same as a full-dressed HD (906 lbs wet although with what I have in my saddlebags, mine weighs about 950 lbs. or more and I usually ride doubled up with my wife.) It's a massive machine. HD owners who have ridden a R3T Touring almost always comment on how massive and heavy it feels compared to their HDs and how it feels like it can easily tip over at a stop if it's on even just a slight angle to the ground. So, that being the case, I simply don't feel comfortable with only my left foot down but that's especially true on an incline or decline. So, what I do is this in that situation: With both feet on the ground, I lock the bike in place with the front brake. When I'm getting ready to take off, I "load up" while holding the front brake. My right hand is doing two jobs but it's very easy with just a little practice. Then I ease off the clutch until the bike wants to move and, as it starts to move, I release the front brake and increase the throttle. Using this method, I can start as smoothly as if I used your technique. I'm sure with your experience, you could keep your right foot on the brake with no problem when stopped with a R3T but that simply doesn't work for me. However, I'm sure I could use your technique with an HD. A Rocket III Touring must have a higher center of gravity and anyone who rides one remarks that it feels as you will reach the point of no return very quickly if you lean it even slightly too much when stopped. It feels very massive and heavy. Also, when I ride a HD, my knees are bent quite a bit when both feet are on the ground but they are almost straight with the R3T (I'm 6' with 32" legs). So, at least for me, your left foot down only technique isn't ideal with the Rocket - for me. But I'm an old fart who had a 40 year break from riding. I started riding in 1969 but stopped in about 1975 or so. I got back into riding when I bought my R3T in 2015. I immediately took a 6,000 mile solo road trip traveling on much the same route I did back in 1969. But my slow-speed skills are terrible although I'm fairly good at riding very slowly in the friction zone but I can't do a U-turn for the life of me - let alone a figure 8. When I first got the Rocket, I tipped it several times and that spooked the hell out of me. When I watch your practice videos, I realize I would make a damn fool of myself if I took a part in your practice sessions when your riders do U-turns and figure 8s. I need about 3 miles to do a U-turn! :-) I wish I could get private lessons with you for a couple days but I'm in Illinois. Then again, the trip would be worth it.
    Keep up the great work!

Hey Bob. Thank you for watching and hopefully you’re subscribed!👍🏾😊 Also, thank you for the compliment! Much appreciated brother!
No need to apologize for the length of your message. I appreciate you taking the time to type it. As you’ll see in my Practice Session videos, I do mention that just putting your left foot down is really a motor officer thing because it makes us all look uniform when we’re stopped. I also say there’s a million ways to do these things, so if a way other than what I teach works best for you, by all means do it your way brother. It’s still getting you to the same place we all want to be… The Boss of our motorcycles!👍🏾

re: Stopping - I was taught to keep my eyes straight ahead and when, at the exact stopping point, swivel the head to the left ~10 to 15 degrees while simultaneously putting the left foot down...this has been a habit for years and for me it helps lock me in to stable stops. I don't know if this is a relevant procedure but its become automatic for me.

Excellent explanation! I'm a relatively new rider (6 months, ~2,700 miles), and now I'm teaching my brother-in-law how to ride. A little like the blind leading the blind, but videos like this are super helpful for both of us.
I'll definitely be practicing this one soon, Lord willing. I've always held the clutch in fully until I stop, and I've never been able to perfect the smooth, controlled stop. Now maybe I know why. I assume this will be applicable on all types of bike, right? I have a Suzuki Boulevard that I learned on (and now my brother-in-law is learning on), so that's similar to the style you're riding, though much smaller, but my main bike is an adventure style bike, a Triumph Tiger.

Thank you for all your very helpful videos. they have helped me gain confidence in riding my '15 Roadking, can you give any tips or make a video on properly downshifting at higher speeds, I'm not 100% sure on how to downshift correctly. I've been learning about Rev Matching and engine braking, i have been coasting to a stop with the clutch in. Thank you for having this channel, keep up the great content.

One more thing I want to add, Robert. I am a subscriber and met a very new rider in the parking lot where I practice. She had failed the MSF course and was very discouraged. She rides a lightweight sport bike and was dropping it, stalling it, putting her foot down, etc. I gave her a few pointers that I learned from your channel, specifically, PRELOAD and KEEP IT LOADED, using the rear brake, etc. Almost immediately her husband and I noticed a huge difference in her riding ability. She stopped dropping the bike and didn't stall any more. I referred her to your channel and she "binge" watched a number of your practice sessions. I know that soon she will feel confident enough to take another run at getting her endorsement. I want to add a special thanks to your practice riders. Because of their willingness to put themselves out there, their errors become our lessons. Thank you for all that you do. You are appreciated.

Robert you are great. I am always learning so much from your videos. Really a great inspiration for us riders. I had a Harley Davidson Fat Bob ( stage 3), great bike lots of power but wanted something more for touring. I was so nervous about getting a bigger bike until watching your videos. I bought a Yamaha Royal Star Venture. Plan on riding it around town etc. Getting used to it before taking on a long trip. Thanks so much. I'll keep you posted. 🙂

Thanks for the insight Robert. I will be sure to spend time practicing smooth left for only stops using this technique. I make a point to practice going as slow and straight as possible to develop better balancing skill. I'm still learning how to stay in the friction zone I want to be in. I'm getting better but I have a long ways to go. I also practice U-turns in the circle courts of my neighborhood. I am slowly getting better but I still struggle to put the bars in full lock to make the U-turn sharper. I think getting a better fitting seat will help with that too though. The stock seat of my road glide seats me back a little further than I'd like and I really have to stretch my arm to get full lock and that makes me uncomfortable.

Keep at it Travis and you’ll get it. Remember it’s not necessary to make a full lock u-turn. However if you want to achieve it, definitely scoot up on that seat. It will help. 👍🏾

Hey, I want to thank you for saving my life! I watch all the "other guys" on the web, they all teach high speed turns, intersections, merging etc. These are all important skills BUT if I can't master the beast (my big ass Harley) at 8 mph I am in trouble with all the other stuff. You are the ONLY guy who continually emphasizes being proficient at low speed as a building block to surviving at higher speeds. You also make it extremely understandable. I am no longer afraid of leaning my bike or of turning and I have "thank God and you" lost the fear of drooping my bike. Knowledge is power and you freely share your extensive knowledge. I thank you and the other drivers on the road, although they don't know it, should thank you as well. I am no longer a rolling cluster f&$k. I now practice before every ride but I now enjoy the ride and know I can handle the basics, the building blocks. Thank you again. By the way, I just turned 71 so there is hope for everyone.
