    I have the legion go, deck oled LE, and win mini 64 gig ram, 2 tb. I love all 3 of them. But I have to admit if I had to pick 1, as much as I’m into my windows handhelds, it’ll be the steam deck. It just can’t be beat, and yes it can’t play some games, but one could argue their mostly competitive type games that most people would be playing on their main setup and not on the go. For portable, single player type games played offline, at decent battery life, the deck is on top.

      And not just that, it's also that the Steam Deck has more consistent frame times. This has been proven by several more technical outlets. And I've long ago leaned that frame time consistency is just as important as average framerate. Big swings in frame times will be perceived as stutter even on a variable refresh rate display. I've been very impressed with how balanced the Steam Deck is and how consistent its frame times are.

    I’ve had both and I stuck with the Ally simply because I like to use mods when I play PC games and I’m more familiar with Windows than Linux.
    I also like the freedom of having multiple games and storefronts readily available. I got tired of waiting for games to be “Steam Deck compatible”

    In my opinion the ROG Ally is a bit of a stillborn device, which I suppose is a risk that comes with being first to market.
    When the capabilities of the Z1E starts at 15w which is also the maximum power consumption of Steamdeck, putting the same 40Wh bettery in the ROG Ally was a huge mistake.
    1-2 hour battery life hardly qualifies as a portable gaming machine.
    Then you have the SD card reader issues.
    I'm sure Asus will come back swinging with a much better product whenever AMD reveals the Z2E processor.
    I actually had the ROG Ally pre-ordered but cancelled when I found out about the GPD Win Max 2 refresh, which would still be my #2 pick for the best handheld gaming system today because of its HUGE 67Wh battery (and the GPU Win Max 2(2023) is still the best optimized 7840u powered system on the market).
    The problem with the GPD is its screen is a spectacularly unspectacular 60hz LCD.
    So after ALMOST buying three different handhelds (Legion Go was out of stock) when Steamdeck OLED was announced it was an instant buy.
    (And I very much love the Steamdeck for being able to play Xbox 360 era games for 6-8 hours.)

    • @freakytechreviews
      @freakytechreviews  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      This is a great breakdown. A lot of where the Ally could improve was only blatantly obvious after it had released. To your point I do think that Asus will come out with a beast of a handheld with the next iterations, because that's the only reason the OLED Steam Deck even competes: it's a second generation. I hope to see this market really take off as the foundation of handheld gaming is strong, so I can't wait to see what they do from here.

      @budthecyborg4575 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@freakytechreviews Things the ROG Ally 2 needs:
      1. Mini LED (I say LCD and not OLED because apparently VRR on OLED is very difficult, but if Asus can pull off VRR OLED then that's perfect)
      2. Double the battery life (better optimized system and bigger battery)
      3. Trackpad (native mouse support is a BIG deal for some games)

    • @budthecyborg4575
      @budthecyborg4575 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@freakytechreviews I think the biggest problem with all of these Windows handhelds is in part AMD's fault.
      Unless 60Wh batteries are going to become standard the future Z2E chip needs to be optimized to perform well at 10w and maximum output should be 20w.
      Exactly matching the power envelope of Steamdeck would also be a mistake because Windows can never compete head to head with Linux on efficiency, but the Z2E architecture just needs to be tweaked for peak performance/watt at a slightly lower window.
      It's hilarious how when Steamdeck came out I was disgusted by the "weak" GPU, fast forward a year later and the moment competing products are on the market we find out Steamdeck is a masterpiece of system design, significantly outperforming all competing products at 10 watts (and that was before the 6nm refresh).

You also can return it for 15 days if there is a problem or you just don't want to keep it. They concluded my Steam deck is old school and can't even run game pass. I owned the Steam Deck OLED before getting the Ally. I wasn't impressed. Trying to install a 4TB M.2 2280 NVMe SSD (Samsung 4TB 990 Pro) on the Steam Deck OLED was too difficult and felt unsafe. With about 2TB of ROMs for emulation, the lack of upgrade options was upsetting. Additionally, when attempting to mod some Steam games, I discovered that some of the mods I wanted weren't compatible with Linux.
    Upon getting the Ally, it had everything I needed. I could upgrade and install the 4TB M.2 2280 NVMe SSD, mod games because it runs on Windows, and play non-Steam games like Kingdom Hearts 3 on Epic. The variable refresh rate improved game smoothness, as tested on Elden Ring.
    Having a 4TB SSD eliminated concerns about the SD card issue, and with a battery bank, the battery life on the Ally wasn't a concern either. I later found out that you can mod the battery on the Ally to make it even bigger. It's done.
    What I like about the Ally is its versatility compared to the Steam Deck. The only thing I would like the Ally to have is the Oled screen and 32GB of ram. I ended up giving away my OLED to my brother.

      @@freakytechreviews That’s fair. I’ve found the steam deck to be more difficult if tinkering is required such as non steam stores etc. but if I stay inside steam then it’s a much better handheld experience.
      I currently have both and am trying to decide if I should keep the deck.
      Windows freedom and more power vs better continue and better battery life.

    If you had tried the latest AMD AFMF driver, you wouldn't say that, because the Rog Ally has become significantly ahead and better. I now play a game with high and ultra graphics settings enabled. Unfortunately, when I go back to the Steam Deck, it feels like I've returned to a PSP.

    Another misleading steam deck commercial. 😂

      How so? Steam Deck is simple and easy to pick up, but lacks overall power and performance compared to the Ally. It's a fair assessment that doesn't necessarily pick one over the other, but instead focuses on the fact that they are for two different audiences.
