    One thing I learned about zoning is that if you're trying to raise the value of a zone by detailing walls you have to add the wall to the zone too.
    One of my dwarves wanted a decent study so I detailed the walls but the value wasn't going up, then I realized I only zoned the inside of the room and not the wall so it wasn't taking it into account. Then I zoned the wall and the value instantly rose up to Decent study.

    A relatively important part you skipped while trading: the liaison will also tell you of things he wants next year, so to maximise profitability take careful note of these items!
    It's usually easiest to buy/sell the whole bin if its contents are mostly tradeables: bins are quick to make & hence replace. CAVEAT: if you wish to trade with elves for eg exotic pets, be sure the bin & all of its contents are /not/ made from wood or wood-derived items such as eg anything smelted (which uses coal, which is ultimately derived from wood)
    Most of your starting lvl is peat, which is an excellent floor type for farming to maximise your crop yields!
    15:17 Dwarves can learn from reading books; they're particularly useful for training up management, entertainment & social skills as well as the more esoteric stuff such as eg geometry for architects, mathematics for brokers, or the teaching skills. Eventually, if your teachers are skilled enough, they can write books themselves leading to an increase in your fort's reputation & fame (& hence increasing your noble's path to becoming the ruler of your whole civilisation), leading to more & better-skilled visitors' joining petitions
    26:00 Artefact (ie strange-mood-produced) items can be made from anything, even materials that wouldn't normally be able to be used in the construction of that item. So you /can/ have eg a gold sword or similar produced by a moody dwarf; you just can't make it with regular orders

    This series is once again extremely helpful in taking my long trepidation about the game and the overall complexity and making it stick, and I've had two forts succumb to cave denizens and I was excited to get to start a third. Getting to the point where I'm dying from the game but not my own managing incompetence feels great!

    These guides have convinced me to give the steam edition a go. I've been aware of Dwarf Fortress basically since the beginning, but it always looked so baffling, even knowing what I was looking at would've required lots of study and been a feat in itself. So I always wrote it off as an incredibly fascinating piece of interactive art but one that was far beyond my capability to even begin to fathom, much less play. So when I heard it was getting a steam edition with a proper visual tileset, mouse support, and more accessible UI, I was somewhat intrigued but still felt that the level of complexity in the game based on everything I've heard and seen of it would still be beyond me. But watching these, I gotta say, it just looks so damn cool, I have to give this a good honest try. Going to try and follow some of the tips in your guides as well as go through the in-game tutorials, and just try to take things slow at first, not worry too much about knowing everything. I'm actually kind of excited to try it out now. So ya know, thanks for the inspiration and all. If you feel like doing more tips and tricks videos or beginner guides like this, that would be really awesome too. One minor thing, you do talk a bit quickly and go over a lot of information fast sometimes, so maybe slow it down just a tiny bit, would make the guides a little easier to follow, but otherwise great content.

    So with the work order, assuming things work the same as they do in the original game. The conditions are only for whether or not a job should restart. The work order will always make the amount specified in the order. So in your example, once you drop below 50 food, the work order will start for 75 food bringing you up to 125. Correct me if I am wrong, but I am pretty sure the work orders will not stop halfway through.

    Well, first time ever playing by following your tutorial and the ingame one. Things are pretty laid-back in my fortress so far except for the random possessions that keep happening. Two adults have been possessed and they ended up going berserk and had to be put down. One's severed head was buried along with her corpse and the other had to have her severed leg buried with her. Two children have become possessed and keep making what appear to be legendary scepters. The only thing my archers found was my legendary inscriber outside. Which to me was very very odd. Then a bit later some of my live stock were being killed, but this time I was notified that it was an agitated yak doing the fighting. I rush my squad over.. Bam! These are super helpful thank you. I got things up and running but then had a were monitor attack. He was easily slain but I forgot what Were means and now all my leaders and the children are now dead.
    But I'm attracting humans who want to join for "soldiering". So heroes are abound I guess.
    Thanks again

    So quick and easy thing I found to set up for the traders the first year? Cut and set the jewels in the figurines you make if you have the time, I ended up with almost 9000 worth of goods thanks to that in the first year, though I got lucky in that a migrant came who was a decent jewel crafter

    Excellent series, really fantastic for knowing what to do just getting started!
    I've got to ask though, can you please check the description of Zursulgigin, the gold warhammer that was made by the first fey mood at ~30 minutes? One of my favourite things is reading the insane descriptions of the fey mood artefacts, and I'm so curious about it!

    Definitely need to keep making these. There are SO many things that are not explained in the game, and the wiki or other guides are tricky because it's the old version, thus visual explanations from those is like looking at Matrix code scrolling by lol I've got about 50+ dwarfs in my current setup, after FINALLY being able to build a aqua duct/reservoir/well because my fortresses kept dehydrating. Now I'm just completely overwhelmed trying to meet their needs and it feels like no one wants to do anything promptly except mine. So many work orders and tasks that no one seems to get around to. And yes, I do have the manager + office setup. They actually just elected a Mayor so now I have to build a big, nice throne/quarters area for him. I have zero military/training/weapons or anything setup. There's just so much to do that I can't seem to get caught up!

    • @Nookrium
      @Nookrium  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Keep the booze flowing, there shouldn't be any dehydration as long as you keep the brewer running.
      Also, for the first few forts I would try to focus on specific parts and forget the rest. It can get pretty overwhelming so it's best to just focus on a few areas (sustaining food/drinks/seeds for instance)

      @@Nookrium Wheres the fun in that?! 😆 But yea, at least for the military, I just meant anyone who can fight. Just had my first monster show up: An Ettin! I panicked, because I haven't fought anything real yet, but I got a few people together and wow.. The Mayor lead the charge and reading it was like the scene with Achilles in Troy! He dodged every single attack and just kept poking away with his spear hahaha Anyway, I've just built a nice Barracks area. I can't go any deeper for now because of an aquifer. Just started making iron etc. So many questions about everything.

    I didn't know about the demands by clicking the workshop and my dwarf completely lost it! Took off all of his cloths and starting to wondering in the bar babbling stuff. He died short after. D: And that's how I lost my expedition leader on one of my previous forts. xD The one I have right now is a complete chaos! D: And I lost almost all my military forces on the first siege. So, I believe I will start a new one.

    • @Nookrium
      @Nookrium  ปีที่แล้ว

      It'll take a bit to get there since a lot of that is a bit more advanced. I'm trying to keep things from getting too overwhelming for new folks.
      However, I know they're long videos but my streamed fort: th-cam.com/video/GWxkLkRbYd4/w-d-xo.html covers all of that. Even getting into a war and attempting to conquer and occupy a goblin fort (on part 3)
