If you're having issues with lack of drinks, the dwarves are likely cooking/eating all their drink-making foods. You can disable brewable foods in the kitchen section of the labor menu, I think.
@@okeoi That was my latest plan with fortress #10. I dont feel safe until my food and drink are up past 500 ea. How important is a kitchen cooked meal? My dwarves started to get upset about the uncooked food by year 5 or so...i think.
@@snickle1980 As soon as you have some food stored, start making lavish meals. It's a big mood booster and barrels filled with masterpiece meals can be valued up to nearly 10k in trade. I trade cut gems for the first couple of years then just start selling meals and buying out entire trade caravans.
Find a reliable gather spot whether it be on the surface or a cavern, make TWO breweries, it should take long at all.. I have one kitchen and two breweries and I'm always at 1500, 1500
One of my forts failed, interestingly. I chose a magma pipe location, but at least then, those were surrounded by imps. My plan, breed a huge army of dogs and lead them to take control of the magma. I made so many of them the game started to slow down a bit, which I considered a trigger to start the assault. Dogs go in following their master, hundreds of them. Imp sees the dogs, and breathes fire. The dogs catch fire and panic. The on-fire panicking dogs cause other dogs to ignite leading to a chain reaction. The heats reaches a level where the fat in the dogs melts and leaks out, causing pools of burning dog fat everywhere in my fort. Nobody makes it out alive. I guess I should have shaved the dogs beforehand, were that possible.
It's crazy, I too once had a legendary dwarf named iteb who was head of military and head doctor. Stood by himself up to a hydra that had wiped about about 150 dwarves, I didn't get to see the end of that fight bc the game crashed, this was in vanilla fort. Dr iteb lives on
I would definitely read a book about being locked in the dungeon after not crossing the drawbridge in time, forced to hide from a forgotten beast. After the colony somehow learns your alive, you explain its weakness and it finally goes down

A good way to find out vampires (at least if their dwarves who live there) is to check their thoughts tab I got a vampire early on and found them out because they were “dismayed as seeing blank die” nobody else had this thought so I locked him up

I was definitely glad to watch a lot of these vods. I've heard a lot about Dwarf Fortress but hadn't seen a ton of gameplay, especially not for a long time. The vampire mysteries was an incredible time. XD And letting the forgotten beasts deal with each other was a great plan. Well played!
Damn, dwarf fortress looks fascinating. That version with sprites for everyhing is the best thing who happened to the game. Someday will take the time to learn to play it effectively, complex game and hell to manage the building aspect. I always sucked on that aspect as a player in other games haha.

just as a warning about the moat... the thing thats happening is the dwarfs ai tells them to "dodge" in combat to an adjecent tile which can be a perfectly safe tile of drawbridge... or moat of lava, or 20 layer drop, so yeah, not super safe... also with werebeasts i don't think the chance of infection is 100% so it's a good idea to have a few "quarantine" areas with drawbrides as a doors and see if they turn or not if they've been attacked
on god this is the only game where this kind of video is actually helpful for me. Bought it on sale knowing my love for all things esoteric, and it's been a lot to pick up. Ty for making the content!

I think i had this one time where i saw a human swordsman who single handedly killed a swarm of fully armored goblins effortlessly and was still unharmed and unfazed by the end of it, and i really thought he was an anime mc way back then
Which setting creates the best gameplay? 5 years? 50? 100? 250? At some point, I understand that the map will become crowded with evil, and lag... _and evil lag._ But if i start in year five...nothing really happens. Dwarf fortress is filled with hard choices. =(
I like setting it to 100, or letting the story run to 150-ish. Too much more and the necromancers kinda run over everyone. History length doesn't really affect lag, it does affect save time considerably, though.
I pick a small world, low civs, and low sites, and five years in I still get plenty of action. But I also play with added ratflok, gnoll, and beastman civs. If I play any longer into the game, most of the choice spots are taken or inhospitable due to evil faction proximity. 100 years in, half of the settlements are one day away from 5-6 massive evil sites, at a minimum. If I settle on the doorstep of my parent civ, I drown in immigrants rapidly. With my settings, forts often last a decade plus and I'm not in a rush because I naturally level up on par with the other civs and I don't get swamped or overwhelmed. My last fort, which I retired because I didn't make the luxurious tavern's pool right and it looks stupid, lasted 20 years with a capped 120 pop through a mod (which can be changed in settings but the mod just lowers cap in the game so you don't have to manually edit it every time.)
"as punishment he was confined for 228 days and scheduled for a severe beating" hahaha - its crazy to see how good at the game you are. I wouldn't know where to start to capture a forgotten beast. im strugging keeping my dwarfs happy and lasting 3 years
Tip for Elf Trading: Since they won't accept anything with meat, bone opals, shell opals, or wood of any sort that really only leave metal and stone goods. Of those, the best value per material ratios are Goblets. Generally, I put up iron and platinum goblet work orders and stockpile them in a place accessible near the depot.
I watched the whole thing expecting to see how your fortress ended at year 10, but it never did. So, how long did you went on after that? Maybe do another video of your fortress reaching 20 years. Nice video, i was immersed from start to finish.
Hey, I just wanted to say your fortress is awesome! I’m brand new to Dwarf Fortress (Although I am not new to the genre) and it’s videos like these that make me want to get better at the game to hopefully make my own story out of a fort one day. God bro, so many people having fun with this game and i feel like i cant make it past 30 mins without following a guide and being afraid of unpausing the game because i take too long to figure things out :/
Turn of "Animal hauling" in the chores tab if you don't want them to do the work. Also, for those better armed and skilled enemies, better have an escort to tag along your prisoner caravan, they can break out of confinement and try to wreck havoc as they escape. You can "build" the cages if you want. The wiki says you can strip thier equipment, but idk how. I got lucky, but I knew how bad it could've been and so far, my dwarves falling 1z level into a pool of water for swimming practice posed more threat than the goblins do for they might land on thier throat, the injured part explodes into gore and a major artery is exposed. That pool has a couple soap bars dropped in it and a poor skeleton of someone who died in there. It's been sort of refurbished into a bathhouse (Wiki says it's possible mainly from the older versions) but so far, no one is keen on using it.

When I start farms I don't have any seeds and the hunters/fishers don't catch shit. When embarking I spent a ton of points on food drinks and seeds and I still run out lol

If you played a lot of RimWorld it will be easy to get into it. I've got 2k+ hours in RimWorld but never really played DF before this and it's pretty easy to get into it.
I could see them but I'd have to be looking at that room when it happened, and with how much stuff happens across many layers in DF, it's almost impossible to catch them in the act.

Consider isolating new arrivals, be rhey humans or dwarves till you know that they're safe? Reduces the risks of vampires and other beasts... If you get say 20 migrants and one of them suddenly dies to blood loss but those 20 haven't actually left a isolation area you'll know that one of them did it and can work on eliminating suspects from them instead of everyone else too...

I had that disabled but at that one point we just had too many new people and lots of visitors and were just not producing enough.

I believe later you start, more evil places will be in the world. Also your fort might have been far away or even inaccessible to enemies.
As a huge rimworld fan, scared off by the previous graphics of DF. After watching this I have never been so tempted to try it !

I never played this game, can you not see the person entering the room to drain the blood? That's kind of a cool mechanic if you can't.
