Shout out to GW keeping the trend alive of including a leader that does not fit in the set it comes in. First the Biologis in a box with zero gravis units and now this with two terminator leaders and only one terminator squad.

One of the big problems, to me, is how restrictive it is with who can join what units - there are so many kinds of marines and they can only be led by certain leaders. I was just starting to build DA army in 9th and when 10th landed, and I ended up with an additional primaris leader on one hand, and on the other hand I had squads with Terminator Armor, Gravis Armor, and Phobos Armor with no leaders... I feel like I'm stuck in this spot where I have to buy more models I don't want just to give my extra leader something to do, or just not use them and build/paint a different kind of leader to support my un-led units. I get that there's some logic to have like units lead their squads, but it feels very restrictive when many leaders are kind-of useless on their own.

If I am understanding correctly - the unit list points out at the 1998 battleforce - the MSRP back then was of around 75$, which in inflation-adjusted modern dollars would be around 140$. Still an _extremely_ aggressive price, compared to today, but surely not 40£.

@@lewisbenzie845 I see that prices have risen well above inflation and yeah, we can talk about great sculpts but the sculpts in that battleforce were, for their day, the best sculpts GW produced so I'm not sure what your point is. Indeed, the Landspeeder and Bikers that are being discontinued this codex have been updated once since 1999 for ease of assembly but otherwise are stylistically almost indistinguishable. The biker was given a rounded hip joint, separate head and front/back torso instead of a flat hip, single torso and head combo. The Landspeeder was given separate weapon options and some of of larger hull plates were made into small pieces for ease of assembly.

I think this shows the issue of primaris squads being locked into one weapon type. A new player would probably rather have a squad that lets them experiment with different weapons like you could with tactical marines or devastators. A new player isn’t going to get much use or experience from a niche weapon squad, let alone from a flamer one. They should’ve thrown in regular intercessors instead and the regular intercessor kit should be optional between assault or tactical intercessors, like how csm’s can take wither bolters or chainswords. Lets new players decide if they wanna go melee or ranged

New player here. I got the Leviathan set so I've essentially got the Combat Patrol and I've started my playing experience using them for simplicity. There have been obvious pros and cons from the outset.
From a pro's perspective, having just 2 squad and two characters has made it much easier and quicker for me to pick up the basics of the game. It's also been nice to have a tough unit in the Terminators so that I've been able to do and take damage easily.
From a negative perspective, it's clearly an uncompetitive Combat Patrol, with little tactical flexibility for capturing objectives (with effectively only 3 units on the board), and as per the video, whichever character has to go unaccompanied is effectively rather vulnerable despite their terminator armour. In a no victory points punch-up it also quickly becomes a slow war of attrition to see if the terminator squad with attached character can wipe out as many of the enemy as possible, as the infernus squad and solo character are quickly targeted and destroyed when faced with more mobile and numerous enemy units.
All said, from a financial perspective I'm glad I got them through Leviathan rather than via Combat Patrol, and I can see how they have some gaming value, but are best considered as a starter/taster experience, albeit a very expensive one in term of points and pounds.

I just need to point out GW miniatures are all monopose now. Who would create a box of Sisters Noviates with separate faces? Not heads but faces! I love a good monopose miniature to bulk out an army on the troops side but the current trend is horrendous from a build and accessibility point. I miss the good old days of 3rd/4th edition miniatures where we had truly multi pose minis available. As for this combat patrol it’s a hard pass for me, I’d probably just buy the full starter set instead. Auspex yet again providing excellent consumer advice.

I got newbie trapped by this after getting a glowing recommendation for it from my local GW store manager, and spent time painting it only to see that i'll never use any of it in an actual game. I guess the real purpose of this kit as part of the starter set is to prepare the customer for what Games Workshop is like.

It would have been a much better box if they had included a cool unique midel like ancient in terminator armour or a cool new lieutenant that is exclusive to this box. Otherwize the box just looks like a way that GW get their moneys worth of the moulds or excess stock from the leviathin box.

    • @pst5345
      @pst5345 ปีที่แล้ว

      nothing. Pure predatory pricing.
If you are a new player the best value is in an Ultimate Starter Set box or Leviathan box but even those 2 boxes either need additional content by buying the respective codices and/or index plus data sheet cards.
If you want to upgrade to 10th edition you have no real value.

I mean, you don't have to buy the Combat Patrol box to play Combat Patrol, you just need those specific models. Buying the box is just a way to get all of the models in one place. I'm pretty sure the rules for the Combat Patrol armies are free on the website? So as long as you have the models assembled, you're good.
You shouldn't build a 500 point army, that's just too small. Maybe build up 500 points to start with just so you don't overwhelm yourself with too much to paint, but if you're looking to play, I really think 1000 points is your "small and simple game" cutoff (unless you are specifically playing Combat Patrol in which all the lists are about 400-600 points). I've made a bunch of 1000 point armies that seem fun to play and pretty simple; 500 points basically gets you a single character and a few squads at best and the balance of the game itself is all out of wack. I'm looking to start Space Marines by buying the Blood Angels and Dark Angels Combat Patrols and combining them, they make almost exactly 1000 points together and it's got some really cool units. I'll buy a Captain and some other units I really like to flesh it out later.
Basically, find the box that has units you think are cool in it, and start from there. There might not be one with the units you specifically think are cool; in that case you might want to start piecemeal, buying a box or two of units, building and painting those, and then moving forward.

The sad part is they could have easily fixed this by swapping out the Captain for the Sternguard Veterans instead and give their Oath the 1st Company version. I agree that the new Space Marines Combat Patrol is the worst ever. I don’t know what GW is thinking releasing this only two months after the 10e Starter Sets.
GW should’ve bundled some of the new SM kits into a combat patrol, like the Jump Pack Intercessors, Jump Pack Captain, Desolation Squad, and a Brutalis or Ballistus Dreadnought. That would’ve been a good combat patrol, which wouldn’t have overlapped with the 10e Starter Sets. Perhaps one overlapping unit, like an Infernus Squad, would’ve been acceptable for the CP box, but those 4 units are identical to the SM half of the Ultimate Starter Set, which is a far better deal.
