Had Roy retired after the 1st Tarver fight, he would be considered the best ever. He was 34 yrs old going onto 35 and had no business getting back into the ring after losing 25lbs of muscle from his first Tarver fight.
The best in his prime IMO.

If we go by records it is near impossible to have an undefeated record, especially as a heavyweight, marciano did that. If we go by personal skill, it is unquestionably Joe Louis who has the greatest boxing arsenal, Ali was untouchable and changed the game, and Robinson was perfect in footwork, speed, power, and timing. Foreman was the most powerful, Roy Jones Jr. Was arguably one of the best finishers though.

Prime Roy Jones Jr has to go down as one of the top 5 greatest boxers of all time. He had everything, defence offence speed, power, counterpunching. He probably relied on his speed a bit too much which led him to lose the way he did later in his career, but when talking about him in his prime, he was a freak of nature.

Larry Barry That doesn’t take away Roy’s prime. His prime was absolutely sensational. By the time Roy fought Tarver the first time, he looked slower and weaker. The second time, it was apparent that Roy’s time had come. He had passed his prime and was declining rapidly. The fact that we still debate Roy's greatness after the back-to-back knockout losses to Tarver and Johnson shows how much respect fight fans have for Roy.
Sugar Ray Leonard was my childhood hero. He won against Hearns, Duran, Hagler, and Benitez...four incredibly dangerous dudes. Ray was something special but I am not sure that Prime Ray beats Prime Roy, especially if Ray was at 160.

The prime Floyd wasn't at 154, it was at 130 - 140. Roy was too big to hypothetically compare them fighting each other. Floyd was a better all round fighter, Roy was more exciting and powerful. He relied on his speed though - when that started to slow down, flaws were exposed. Floyd didn't have flaws like that - no suspect chin or leaky defence. It's strange to imagine how we'd perceive Roy had he retired after winning the WBA title from Ruiz...only loss to that point was by DQ, and was avenged via first round KO. Yes, you can argue that his opposition was weak, but Roy knew that, which is why he moved to heavyweight to find a real challenge. He was already at the end of his prime, but the debilitating weight cut back to 175 for the first Tarver fight (which I did score for him; barely, but he did win) took what was left of him. Tarver is a good fighter, but I think that was what killed Roy. He was still VERY good for a few more years, but he wasn't the best at light heavyweight after that. Then he destroyed Moorer in the 2nd fight. Even if he had waited until after the 2nd Lewis fight, which enough people felt he won, he would've retained most of it, b/c he was fighting Lewis in Lewis' prime and gave away a zillion pounds. He is still (rightfully) considered an all-time pound for pound great, as is Jones, but just a little less than it would've been otherwise. Life's a bitch though.

Difference between Ray Robinson and Jones jr. is that Ray Robinson didn't leave behind so many unanswered questions in the divisions he rose to the top of. People talk of Charlie Burley, but Burley retired before Robinson ever became middleweight champion. Not to mention, the mob did all they could to keep Ray Robinson away from the belts; he was far and away the best lightweight in the world and defeated the great Sammy Angott, only to have Angott avoid losing the title by coming in too heavy. Floyd is great using knowledge against fighters who weren't taught the skills he has but against fighters like Jones he would get beat to the punch. Mayweather is a old fighter doing vintage skills against fighters who dont have the 20th century skills. The great boxing minds are dying, alot of fighters are speed and power dependent.

Roy didn't start losing until he began to yo-yo w/his weight. An all time great fighter. He only lost heavily to Joe Calzaghe because his speed had left him and he was a little less fit than he had been. It was quite like watching de la Hoya vs pacquiao. Just age catching up with him. Of course, Joe was fairly old too but he wasn’t losing his speed or stamina. If the fight has happened when Roy was younger, I think it would have been much closer, but it’s hard to call. Joe started to walk through his punches in their match but could he have done it when Roy when at his best? Doubtful, even though he had a good chin.

I disagree with Kellerman - after being undecided for a long time, I think Mayweather was a better all round fighter than Roy. Roy was definitely more of a crowd pleaser though and spectacular to watch. That doesn't make him a better fighter though - it's personal taste if you prefer watching that style to Floyd. (Most people do). He was superb, but more offensively than defensively I think. People will always say his downfall was losing all the weight for the Tarver fight - maybe, but no one will ever know for sure. Maybe he was just starting to slow down at 34 - his style was all based on his pure speed and athleticism. Maybe he always had a suspect chin, but no one was quick enough to check it until the Tarver rematch? Tarver was the best opponent he'd faced for several years. Floyd had a rock solid chin, much better defence, textbook technique, just more of a complete fighter imo.

People are asking me WHO did Jones avoid. I'm assuming these must be younger fans. Mind you, before I expose it, I'm doing it BECAUSE there are many people, fans and the media, that want to pay lip service to RJJ as being possibly the greatest and/or most dominant fighter of not only his generation or era...but EVER. That's fine and all to have that opinion, but in order to TRUELY be worthy of such accolades one MUST have fought the best, the toughest, the most dangerous fighters of his era or generation while they were in their prime. With this in mind, I VIVIDLY remember that when Roy Jones Jr. won the VACANT middleweight title from a GREENHORN from the prison ranks named Bernard Hopkins there was a feared middleweight rising up through the ranks by the name of JULIAN JACKSON. This fight WOULDVE,COULDVE,SHOULDVE been an EPIC encounter at middleweight at the time....Jones QUICKLY VACATED and moved up to super middleweight to fight a James Toney THAT EVERY BOXING INSIDER IN THE BUSINESS KNEW COULD NO LONGER MAKE THE 168 lb LIMIT AND WAS MOVING UP TO 175 to fight at Light Heavy. Toney took the fight for the money knowing he had no chance of winning because he had to come in dead at the weigh-in. This is boxing knowledge. Everybody knows this to be true in the year 2017. It's history. So lets not pretend he fought a PEAK Toney at 168. It was a well calculated move on the part of RJJ. NOW once he moved up to 168 did he fight the CREAM of the crop? Did he fight NIGEL BENN, STEVE COLLINS, GERALD McCLELLAN, CHRIS EUBANK, or even a young but established record of 22-0 guy named Joe Calzaghe? NOPE. Instead he fought the CHAFF--guys like Antoine Byrd, a blown up Lightweight named Vinny Pazienza, Tony Thorton, Merqui Sosa, Eric Lucas, and another prison fighter named Bryant Brannon. While all these very dangerous and GOOD super middleweights were fighting each other Jones was off fighting tomato cans and calling himself the greatest. People always fall for the hype and don't really wake up and see what is really happening and going on. Boxing is no different. Jones is and was always a hype job. When he moved up to 175 TO ONCE AGAIN AVOID a very strong pool of fighters in his weight class he didn't fight Darius Michalczewski, no NOT EVER. Instead he fought an old Mike McCallum, an old Virgil Hill (who was always an ordinary fighter), and a hodge podge of so-called prize fighters. I remember two guys he fought that were actually part-time fighters. One was a cop and I think the other was a teacher or something. He was dropped by Lou DeValle or whatever the tomato can's name was. Now, before you fanboys say these Europe guys didn't want to fight in the USA just let me tell you some boxing TRUTH right now....BULLSHIT! You are fucking a fool if you TRUELY believe that. And even if it were true didn't Roy Jones Jr. recently criticize GGG saying "If you want war sometimes you gotta go look for war!" for staying at 160 and not moving up? If the war was in Europe then WHY DIDNT RJJ FOLLOW HIS OWN CRITICISM OR ADVICE AND GO LOOK FOR IT IN EUROPE??? The Great SUGAR RAY ROBINSON DID!!! If you are gonna call yourself the best ever or the best then the least you should do is FIGHT the best fighters in the world at your weight be it here or there. That's what WORLD CHAMPIONS do. Oh that's right, RJJ fights in RUSSIA now!!! I wonder why. LOL! Wake up people. Oh, and when Jones moved up to fight "The Heavyweight Champion of The World" he didn't fight Lennox Lewis....nope....John Ruiz. See a pattern? Guess ya'all forgot. There's a sucker born every minute. HELLO MAX KELLERMAN.

If wasnt that stupid DQ, Jones would have been 50-0 when he beat Tarver in their first bout.

Roy was chasing greatness (moving up in weight for more challenges). Mayweather was chasing money (strategically picking decent fighters who he know he had an advantage over who would be entertaining while getting the most money out of the fight). Floyd was the better boxer, but I felt B-hop was a better boxer than Roy too, and you saw what happened when they fought the first time. When you are athletically gifted and have speed and punching power like that, it trumps a lot of that "skill" that other fighters would come in the ring with (Ex: Wilder vs. Ortiz). Roy would have either UD'd Mayweather or TKO'd him, and I would bet the house.
