Having a trigger definitively helps with this piece. Also being able to trill and double tongue would add a lot to this piece and make it your own for an awesome audition. Memorize it..

@@jessecohen4517 since there is there is no note lower than f in the piece (despite the pedaltones) u won't need a trigger. In fact the low f will sound better in sixth position rather than with trigger on most trombones

Gustav Schmidt exactly. I played this on a regular tenor trombone and on my double trigger bass and while it was easier in some places with the triggers, it sounded better with the tenor.

Omg I played some of this, definitely the opening anyway, for my 16+ Music exam back in the 1970's. I was adjudicated by Roy Newsome, one of the world's most famous brass band players/conductors/composers and, as a player of only 2 years and not all of that on trombone, I panicked. Needless to say it went badly and I failed the subject too. I can still remember the opening and it still makes me nervous. After 40 years of playing, less 15 years away from it, I would probably still be rubbish lol. 😅

Long tones and slow, slow slurs. I spend about my morning sessions (after breakfast, a shower, and 5 minutes of breathing and buzzing) warming up my lips and improving skills. I begins with 10-15 minutes of slow whole notes (quarter=40) ranging from b-flat in first all the way down an octave and a tri-tone to e in seventh. Then I do slow slips slurs (quarter=60) starting on low b-flat. I do two, three, four, and five, six, and 7 partial slurs. After that, u work on skills. The embouchure focus one must utilize really helps his tone, endurance, and range.
