I had the same problem on my 2003... I selected low range first, that keeps the selector shaft in the transfer housing. to get the CDL housing off, I pulled it out to the collision point with the automatic gearbox. After that I could pull the main shaft a little bit out of the rear bearing in the transfer housing. That gave me the possibility to push the main shaft away from the gearbox oil pan, just enough to pull the CDL housing off the main shaft. It's a little bit tricky, but works. Also the reinstallation worked fine. Important hint: engage the diff lock for assembly. Regards Udo Eversmeier
