  • White Star lures Shadow Vessel in to Jupiter from B5's Messages from Earth (episode 8, season 3). Please note this is all the relevant CGI extracted in order from the episode.
I recently started re-watching (yet again) my Babylon 5 DVD box set collection. Figured I'd do a favour to all my subscribers that did so because of the B5 content I uploaded in the past.
Although it's entertainment, we can also consider it educational for anyone studying CGI of the mid 90's.

Yes, Jupiter's a protective big brother to Earth as it insures that civilization ending meteors don't rain down on Earth all the time and here, it kills a Shadow vessel that could've attacked Earth and killed lots of innocent people.

Jupiter's atmospheric pressure is 2,000 pounds per square inch and its atmosphere is 15,000 miles thick. The deeper you go, like in an ocean, the higher the pressure. Not only could that Shadow not fight Jupiter's gravity but the atmospheric pressure CRUSHED it.

You have to watch the episode to understand. Earth Gov used humans to try and control the ship, and the merging between "Core" (Human) and ship was incomplete, and the ship lost its shit, it was confused and enraged enough to lose control in the pressure and gravity environment.
The Story is, the ships need a Central Operating system to fully operate, and that being, as the Central core, merges with the ship to become one complete entity. If the merging fails for some reason, it is like windows full of Malware after a Windows update.
This goes back to the episode 'Ship of Tears', where Alfred Bester (Psycop) gets help from the B5 crew to intercept 'Weapons Components' meant for the ships, which, were Telepaths, destined to be merged with the Shadow ships. It was after that, that it was discovered, that using a high level Telepath, could block the merged Telepath of the Shadow vessel.

Not a battle, White Star tricks the Earth Force ship in to backing off, by communicating via Interlac (Inter species common communications language) that they want to surrender, the ship backs off, and the White star opens a jump point at the edge of the atmosphere and escapes. Sheridan uses Interlac because he does not want the Earth Force ship to know they speak English.

I read that because of budget constraints they never were able to show the true capable fire power of the Omega class ships. There are also missile tubes along the side to use in combat but we never saw those used in the show. The Centauri Primus class battlecruisers are supposed to be able to fire particle beam weapons too and I think the Vorchan class was intended to have beam weapon capability too but we only ever see them use their pulse weapons.

Omegas are also able to launch 32 fusion nuclear missiles as a broadside Salvo. Couldn't show it due to budget constraints.
It also carries 36 starfuries. That's a lot of death going for you.
The Nova, which later on gets upgraded with gravity drives which brought that entire design back from retirement since its a beast of a ship, had 18 heavy PPG dual cannons, 2 fusion missile launchers, 36 starfuries, and 6 particle beam cannons. 2 in front, 4 in the back. Once EA joined the ISA and got a lot of good tech due to joining Novas and Warlocks became the mainstay with Hyperions and Omegas acting as support craft for those ships.

The only sad part about this is the shadow ships were far more advanced and durable, there's no way it would have been crushed when the white star wasn't considering it never went significantly deeper into jupiter than the white star did. I always hated that part of this scene. Had they been able to penetrate the hull with weapons now that is was under stress from the gravity well, or something like that, it would have been more believable. I doubt it will be a scene for scene remake, there will be new story lines. Also, the overarching events will likely be the same, but the focus of the episodes could be quite different. It might be the story of everything that was ''between the lines'' of the first time around. Imagine the ''Day of the Dead'' episode but from the perspective of entirely different people who experienced it. Imagine the Babylon 4 incident, but it's the events before anyone from B5 showed up. Imagine seeing the assassination of President Santiago from the PoV of the plotters ... so much can be done.

They will need to redo valen or something else will have to happen.

If in real life the Shadows were millions of years ahead of us Jupiter's gravity will be a none issue. If the ship wanted to it easily suck Jupiter into its multi dimensional interior. It will if it wanted to do the same to Ton 618. Even if there was a billion Black Holes the size of Ton 618 they all will be consumed. Based on how the Shadow tech worked on the show they are at most 1,000 years of present day man or 500 years ahead of ST: TNG tech.
