- In case you haven't seen my last video on SteamOS, you can go check that out here ( • What is SteamOS? ), but in this video, I install it on actual hardware. Specifically a spare laptop that I have just lying around, not being used.
SteamOS Download Page (for PCs): store.steampow...
UPDATE: Although SteamOS installed without a hitch, and the big picture mode worked well--as far as the user interface--when I tried to actually game with it, I was unable to get a game to launch.
Maybe it has something to do with the laptop's specs. In case you're curious, here they are:
CPU: 1.6 GHZ Quad-core Intel Pentium N3700
Graphics: Integrated
RAM: 8 GB
Storage: 1 TB HDD
Also, I found Steam's big picture mode to be extremely buggy, freezing frequently, forcing me to fully reboot the system each time (and I thought an advantage to Linux, compared to Windows, was that you rarely need to reboot the system).
I'm sure there are some people out there who use SteamOS on a console PC of theirs, and have it work fine. But with it's beta quality, I don't really see a significant advantage to it over just installing a regular desktop Linux distribution (e.g. Ubuntu, Pop!_OS, Manjaro) and installing the Steam client. You can even configure the Steam client to automatically launch big picture mode on login, and the OS to automatically log you in on startup (*not recommended for security reasons*, except in some particular use cases like this). _And it's not even that complicated to set up._
A couple of you have suggested that I try out HoloISO in order to get the Steam Deck version of SteamOS (which is based on Arch Linux). I will have to try that out sometime.
This is not SteamOS 3 like on the Deck. There is a project called HoloISO that lets you install the Deck version on your PC.
Never heard of it. Thanks for sharing. I will have to take a look at it sometime.
🤔 Don't use this, this is an old brief version of steam os. If you need to use HoloISO
Have to try that out sometime. Thanks for sharing.
OMG the Matrix is real! even the video glitches so many times! 😲🤣
As opposed to installing it on unactual hardware.
Specifically, as opposed to installing it in a virtual machine.
How can I contact with you?
My preferred method would be TH-cam comments (which we are using right now), or if you have a business inquiry, my email address is on the channel’s “About” page.
