I don't know how you can miss peoples gripes about it, we're pretty vocal about our issues. Scaling the story back to be more of an intimate horror is a nice idea but the execution is terrible. You have 3 characters that we all grew to love and care about in the movie being killed off within the first minutes of the movie. It deflates tension as most the characters we care about are now dead and so the film needs to take time establishing new support characters, who are all rapists, so you don't actually care about if they live or die. It's just a pointless shock tactic that fails to invest the audience in the narrative as most people watching the film are too emotionally exhausted to care from the start of the movie.

"Alien3": Going off the track into the "Prometheus" rabbit hole. (I did wonder how a dog, which is just a bit larger than a cat, had enough mass to create a Xenomorph. I see from "The Assembly Cut" that it took an Ox to get a "running on the ceiling" Xenomorph.) The number and length of speeches in A3 made me less than interested. (What is this, "Armageddon"?;)
I unashamedly love Alien³ actually I think it's arguably the most interesting of all the Alien films from a theological spiritual perspective and is just as good as the first two even if it's a little more dated than them because you can tell it was made in the early 90s and not in a good way like how Aliens was clearly made in the 80s. Apart from that it's excellent a masterpiece even, even if Fincher himself won't admit it is but Fincher has never made a bad film and I get the feeling he only says it's bad because of how much the studio interfered with him on it and he doesn't want them to think they can get away with doing stuff like that by saying he thinks it's good. I think it's Sigourney Weaver's best performance as Ripley easily and it has one of the best endings to any Alien film because Ripley dies and doesn't come back unless you count Resurrections which I don't because it's stupid though it does have a sort of goofy retro charm to it though it's unwatchable because of that newborn abomination and the way they shoehorned Ripley into the film and a myriad of other things. Anyway Alien³ is first class and is a postmodern gothic nightmare masterpiece and it deserves less hate than it gets if not outright adulation from people who shit down it's throat all the time because they don't know as much as they think they do and that's just wrong imo. Also fuck Michael Biehn nobody gives a shit about him anymore anyway except fans of Navy Seals and Charlie Sheen winning or something weird like that. 😏
100% agreeable. By far Avp Requiem worst movie of all times. Alien franchise are still good for horror scifi movies as the beginning of futuristic horror called Alien by the late 70's especially "Aliens" on the mid 80's . Alien 3 was more like "prison break " and it was literally slow but enjoyable it's like hunting for survival when Cgi was emerging on the 90's slowly but it was really good on practical effects . Alien resurrection was really impressive on the Cgi on some horror and action scenes some people didn't liked it but I really do . AVP was very good on talking about predator using aliens as baiters to humans that was badass. Avp2 was gory but very boring on the characters the movie flopped out the box office, what a bad movie. I thought they were only gonna present aliens and predators on the space that would change and wouldn't ruin it for the sequel on the screen for Avp saga .
It's still really a great movie for the time and for many reasons Alien 3 has the most fucking crazy story, which was darker, bloodier, and more suspenseful scenes than the alien series which really did 😈💀.
"Nobody enjoyed making Alien 3". Well we didn't much enjoy watching it, either. Granted, following the awesome _Alien_ and _Aliens_ was no small task, but killing all of the survivors of the second one in the first 15 minutes except Ripley was probably not a good way to start. I'd REALLY love to see Neill Blomkamp's sequel that ignores everything that came after _Aliens._
This is new to me. Maybe it's due to this having come out almost 30 years ago or due to the fact I was just a kid and missed that detail. @@DarkMikaruX Michael Biehn, when asked what he thought of Alien 3 famously blurted out, "F&&k Alien 3". I have always hated Alien 3, BUT I did hate the Assembly Cut a little less than the theatrical version. I have softened my position a bit on certain things, but overall I thought Alien 3 made no sense within the first 15 minutes of the film. The score for the film is beautiful. Elliot Goldenthal did a great job of capturing the nihilistic atmosphere of the film. The cinematography is amazing and the cast is top notch. The story is nonsensical though. I’ve never understood how Xeno eggs got where they were shown to be in the first five minutes of the movie. The queen from everything I saw in Aliens had no access to the area we saw a hatched egg in. That’s just the one egg. Where did the other one come from? Logically it was from the queen but how and when? I’m with Michael Biehn; ‘F**k Alien 3’.
There was a workprint version of the film where the scene in which Ripley plugs Bishop back to life and questions him about what happened in the ship that evacuated her into the prison planet, in that scene Bishop confesses to Ripley he brought the egg to the ship unbeknownst to the rest of the crew in Aliens. Since he was a Weyland Yutani android he had a secondary objective programmed in him to retrieve specimens while the events of Aliens were taking place. I think they eliminated it because the movie was already too nihilistic and pessimistic to make Bishop (android) look like a villain.
And I thought Sigourney gave a great performance in this movie. She always does so that's not saying too much. I like the Assembly cut. I'll watch it occasionally.
@@acfan8253 - If such a scene was deleted, we would have known about it years ago. A3's workprint is relatively famous (it was one of the first workprints of a Hollywood film to be leaked on the secondary market), and there are already sites like AVPGalaxy that have catalogued all the changes. From the AVPGalaxy Forums: "The scene of Ripley rewiring Bishop is intercut with scenes in the Mess Hall. Ripley presses some buttons to activate the flight recorder and we cut to Golic seated in the Mess Hall eating. After Ripley says “Why were out cryotubes ejected” we again cut to the Mess Hall and see Eric walking in from the kitchen carrying a load of plates. When Bishop repeats the Sulaco’s computer voice, it’s a different voice from the final film. After Ripley’s line “…prior to separation.” we cut back to the Mess Hall as Eric approaches Golic from behind. After Bishop’s line “It was with us all the way.” Golic, covered in blood, turns and grins at Eric who drops all his plates. After Ripley’s line “And they want it.” we see Clemens, Andrews, Aaron and Dillon grab Golic. One extra line from Ripley when Bishops asks her to turn him off. Ripley - You’re sure? Bishop - Do it for me." There is no dialogue where Bishop allegedly confesses to smuggling eggs aboard. If you heard that somewhere, it's an urban legend or someone trying to pull the wool over your eyes. Also, your comment is incorrect, as Bishop is property of the Colonial Marines, not W-Y. While there may exist the possibility that Bishop was rewired by someone prior to the crew's departure, that's speculation and is never even suggested in the film.
@@crazyrabbits actually I have read something a few years ago about Bishop's extended dialogue, I don't know if it was in any of the cuts of the film but I remember reading about David Giler's and Walter Hill's draft notes saying they wanted to justify the egg in the sulaco as Bishop's hidden agenda. He was an android from Weyland Yutani, the very end of Alien 3 shows you Bishop's prototype works for the company. Sadly, AVP Galaxy doesn't have all the details of the production not even the lore. Like the fact that Bishop was the colonial marines property didn't mean they built him, it was built by Weyalnd-Yutani and the company still have control on those androids' manufacturing and programming. The draft of the producers talk about a lot of scenes that were scrapped or left unfinished such as Bishop's confession, Newt's autopsy, the dog's extended chestburst scene and a hive in a basement in the prison. There are still releasing more details about this film which is amazing. Don't go denying things just because it wasn't on AVP Galaxy, is a forum made by fans, not a journalism source. You're quite happy to point the finger at the makers of Alien3 for the egg scene, yet no mention of another face hugger that can be clearly heard at the end of the previous film that is also never explained.
Great idea for a video, would love to see it fleshed out more, especially regarding Fincher since he speaks about it so little in interviews Still have a lot of affection for that film, one seldom gets a sequel that bleak
The few times Fincher does ever talk about it you can tell it's like bringing up an old wound and he'd rather still not talk about it to this day. Can't blame him considering the hell he went through with Fox over their constant interference on set daily with getting it made.
For me, although nowhere near the original two movies it’s still a great premise, superb cast, brilliant director, set etc. The studio fucked the film over royally though.
He got rid of two key characters, Hicks and Newt. Strange ...but okay But then... two great actors , Charles Dance and Brian Glover were killed off in the first 30 minutes. What a waste!
Alien 1 given how old it is I give it a pass. Alien 2 is the best one. Alien 3 had no suspense, no drama, it was so mediocre and lackluster even the director hated it. Alien 4 tries to bring back the suspense while adding an element of comedy into the series, which was unnecessary.
I think that the audience should have been made to believe that Hicks and Newt died, but towards the end, they discover that they had been taken by Weyland Yutani goons, and had the Xenomorphs surgically removed from their bodies. They escape quarantine, then, with seconds to spare, Hicks shows up and helps kill the Xenomorph

It's ashame the third alien film had a bad reputation since the assembly cut is a far superior version than the theatrical cut. I do think there should have been a way to incorporate newt and hicks into the story without killing them off.
For newt it was somehow impossible with this story line. it required a Newt been in some planet or earth already. The actress was already showing signs of age, so it would contradict the sleeping capsules. Or they would replace newt actress for another, or they would write a new story. Unless they put the aliens on earth, there was no reason for Ripley going again to a new planet and fight aliens (unless she become somehow sarah connor and dedicate her life killing terminators, in this case ripley killing only aliens). something need it to be sacrifice. Within this story, not even Hicks was going to be useful. Remember Bishop telling to Ripley, that he need to put Hicks with painkillers to sleep. Which indicates, Hicks was sever wounded. The prison planet had a infarm, sure, but probably wasnt prepar for someone like Hicks. So Hicks would had stay at least half of the movie in a bed. Perhaps the best was scrapt this story and somehow one egg was left in the ship, and after Ripley, Newt and Hicks been rescue, the company find the egg, and started making experiences. And after a few years, one of the aliens run away and reach earth. I dont think the company was dumb enough to make experiences on earth will aliens. The company, knew if things got away, they need to nuke. Alien reaching Earth, after few years, can give time for a older Newt, Hicks to be fully recover and Ellen to team one more time.
@@RoaryUK No, they absolutely were important. Dark Horse Comics published a series of stories afterward in which Hicks and Newt were the protagonists. From what I gather they had a substantial following among the fan base. Alien 3, as a result, lost many of the fans within the first five minutes. The film did well overseas, but it was a commercial failure in the U.S. Killing them was a very bad mistake. Oh well, what’s done is done. I doubt the film industry will ever fix it.
That makes sense because I didn't enjoy watching it either. I have re-watched the first two movies many times, but was one and done for the rest of the sequels/prequels. There was no point, and it disrespected the previous movie while killing off Ripley. It was a very unpleasant experience and I prefer to pretend it didn't happen. I agree. The franchise never fully recovered. Personally, I think they should have ended it with the second film. It’s better to finish a series on a strong note than drag it out.

Orange tone of rust and fire adds to this movie extraordinary atmosphere. You will never get this kind of movie today.
20th Century Fox could be better off sorting out making Alien vs Predator with Peter Briggs. Which means Alien3 can never be made or could be unfinished.
I absolutely love Alien 3. It was such a daring move to kill off Hicks and Newt in the opening minutes of the film. Of course, the film-makers could have had just Ripley and Bishop's pod be jettisoned during the electrical fire caused by the face-hugger, and leave Hicks and Newt safe aboard the Sulaco (which would have let them use William Gibson's original idea for Alien 3 as Alien 4). I think the best version of Alien 3 would be that it emerged from the dog, (which would explain why it moved so fast), but keep all of the other "Assembly Cut" bits like capturing the Alien, and Golic eventually freeing it, etc..
Honestly making alien 3 was an absolute disaster, so many scripts were written for it and many directors dropped out of the project and even David fincher hated it because he didn’t have much control over what was going on and you can see that some of the scenes were heavily cut
It's really not even his film at all considering it's a bastardization of what Vincent Ward proposed with the wooden planet and monks just transposed to a prison planet instead.
Agreed. Twentieth Century Fox needed money at the time and looked to the Alien franchise to fulfill their needs, apparently regardless of whatever the plot turned out to be. I wish Sigourney Weaver had turned it down.
As much as I dislike 3, that wasn't Fincher's fault. Fox turned tmdown those other scriprs, not Fincher. And as for what we did get, he wasn't even given time for his own script to even be printed fully. Fox botched the film

I watched this movie again for the first time in years and I feel the same as before: it has its own place in the series that stands out but still remains a bad Alien movie. Not even its great score and cinematography could save it. The star is not Ripley nor the Alien but rather the male prisoners. Ripley herself, who always started out in a lower role only to gradually become the clear leader by a film's end, felt overly subdued and almost out of character. Her only meaningful connection was with the doctor but after he's killed off halfway through there's nobody else to be invested in or to root for. How Hicks, Newt, and Bishop were treated was a laughable insult. We also don't really learn anything new about the Xenomorph as a species. And worst of all, this movie's story was what led to Alien Resurrection.
Resurrection was even worse. At the time I got sucked in due to ripley sort of coming back , and guns being in it again - but it wasn't good at all. At all.

@@channeljan8529 I don't think it froze the narrative at all. Up to this point the films hadn't really dealt with Ripley's trauma and grief except to distract from it by giving her a stand-in for her daughter in the form of Newt. This movie opened up lots of interesting ideas about grief, guilt and loss. Ripley spend the film carrying her guilt and grief around inside her. The themes of religion and criminality reflect this and add to it. It's a movie about recovering from grief and finding redemption, which Ripley ultimately achieves through her self-sacrifice, reminiscent of Jesus on the cross. It might be a little heavy and pretentious, but it's there. Fincher carried some of these themes over to Se7en.

I think most of us expected Ripley to survive in all the movies.....Hollywood won't kill off a hero or heroine, unlike Japanese cinema, where they love a good heroic death.

I agree.
On another note, and one of the features for Alien 3, so many Weaver openly admitted that the Alien 3 cast and crew were the most fun she had ever worked with out of all four films

My father and I were so traumatized by how bad it was I've literally never watched it since. And no curiosity to either. Had no idea they killed off Hicks in the beginning. Just so disappointing.
@@DarkMikaruX Michael Biehn, when asked what he thought of Alien 3 famously blurted out, "F&&k Alien 3". So I'm guessing the reason they killed his character off was because they didn't want to pay him what he was asking. Carrie Henn, Newt, never made another movie after Aliens and I have no idea why Lance Henrikson, Bishop, wasn't featured more prominently (he did have a very small part though).
Blomkamp hasn't made a good movie since District 9.
@@JustWasted3HoursHere Biehn thought he was going to be the lead, with Ripley in cryo for most of the movie. He thought this was his big moment and then they went in a different direction. He sued them for using a picture of his face in the movie. He's a crybaby.
From the AVPGalaxy Forums:
"The scene of Ripley rewiring Bishop is intercut with scenes in the Mess Hall.
Bishop - Do it for me."
There is no dialogue where Bishop allegedly confesses to smuggling eggs aboard.
If I happen to find the article I read about this I will copy the link on here.
You're quite happy to point the finger at the makers of Alien3 for the egg scene, yet no mention of another face hugger that can be clearly heard at the end of the previous film that is also never explained.
Great idea for a video, would love to see it fleshed out more, especially regarding Fincher since he speaks about it so little in interviews
Still have a lot of affection for that film, one seldom gets a sequel that bleak

Strange ...but okay

It's ashame the third alien film had a bad reputation since the assembly cut is a far superior version than the theatrical cut. I do think there should have been a way to incorporate newt and hicks into the story without killing them off.
Both versions are shit
Assembly cut is far superior, much like the extended version of Aliens IMO
Hicks and Newt had to die. They would have ruined this film.

Only problems with alien 3 are killing of hicks, prison with criminals but no guns, crappy alien animation /puppet works.
Nobody enjoyed making it, nobody enjoyed watching it. In short, the entire project just added to the suffering of the world. Good job, folks!

Maybe if the director had used the original screenplay it probably would have had much better reviews and Alien 4 would have a different story.
As much as I dislike 3, that wasn't Fincher's fault. Fox turned tmdown those other scriprs, not Fincher. And as for what we did get, he wasn't even given time for his own script to even be printed fully. Fox botched the film

"Alien 3"? To quote a description of this movie by Chip, Aka Bill Paxton from his role in Weird Science "A Greasy Pork sandwich ,served in a dirty ashtray!
Ruined the Franchise, and I was done!
Alien 3 is a great movie in my book
alien 3 is a better book in my movie....
The dumbest decision in cinematic history was killing Newt. She deserved a happy life.
Alien 3 most shocking moment, was seeing a Shaved Ellen Ripley, and it wasn´t even good to begin
At all.
How was she supposed to act? She was grieving.
@@13strong She shouldn't have been grieving for the whole movie, all that did was freeze the narrative and throw attention to the other characters whom we don't want to care about as much. She lost her daughter at the start of Aliens but she wasn't made to grieve the entire time. Alien 3 was just poorly constructed and didn't really go anywhere.
Fincher carried some of these themes over to Se7en.
that movie should have been a dream and everyone happy, now they are too old
How ironic... Nobody enjoyed watching it either
The only watchable and good part of Alien 3 was the opening segment.
The rest of it you can chuck downhill somewhere..
It was David fincher's idea for everyone to be bald headed
they should have ended Aliens after the second movie
Agreed, or come up with a MUCH better storyline for it regardless of how long it took, this movie sucks
Agreed.
Sadly, the film industry’s bottom line is profit. As long as it makes money it will keep producing sequels, regardless of what the fans want.
Yeah
So many people trash talk this movie but I thought it fantastic and fitting end the character of rippley. I had dreams that the franchise would re-emerge with the sullacko carrying viable eggs the they made number four and my heart sank. Then they let Scott back in and he gave us two vats of vomit with promiscuous and inconvenient what a joke what an absolute joke.
Alien 3 rocks and so does David Fincher
3:34 what’s the name of this episode form the Simpsons, when 👽 😘 Ellen Ripley?
wow...
she's so pretty...
5 million dollars for shaving head??
And that during 90's??
There was almost an Aliens 3 with the original cast and director, but due to the success of Freddy vs Jason, they decided to make AvP instead.
Visually great. Fincher is a master of atmosphere. Story wise no. I am interested now to see what the next chapter will be.
Anyone know that song that starts playing at the very end of this? Please let me know
