Hey guys! First off, CONGRATS on starting your channels! But, let's be real for a minute... TH-cam is a competitive place, and it can be tough to get views when you first starting out. Can I show you how?? I just created a brand new, FREE, on-demand workshop to help you out. Here's the link to sign up and watch it now: www.gillianperkins.com/youtube-growth-workshop/ Can't wait to watch your channel take off!
I'm SO impressed by your planning - you are SO far ahead ... I just started my youtube journey - what's your number one tip for someone like me? Congrats on the 4rth (!) baby 😃 way to go mom ❤️
I'm 35 subs away from hitting 1000. So excited. But this is helpful. I haven't been so consistent uptil now. But I'm planning to start doing 2 videos a week consistently.
Thank you so much for sharing about your growth on your channel. Starting out can feel discouraging at first, but I am learning to embrace the process. Congratulations on baby #4! I love your work 😊
My YT journey is similar to yours in that I started in January (2020, not 2017) and am about 7 months into it. Things are slowly beginning to take off, but it takes a lot of effort to build the momentum and thereby the channel. I really manage best with 1 video per week, however, knowing that that limits the amount of videos available to watch on my channel, have toyed with the idea of periodically blasting YT with a week's worth of videos in order to boost growth. I've seen other channels that I follow expand tremendously when the creator began uploading daily, and I know my IG account grew quite a bit last year when I decided to hit it with one week's worth of posts. Honestly, that much effort to create, edit and post consistent daily content would be exhausting and a huge time-suck for me personally, so overall I am content to keep it to one video a week on average and produce better content. My main focus is on my ETSY shop and creating product for that, so I need to wisely spend my time where my efforts receive the biggest benefit. Currently, I am hosting a subbie challenge and giveaway which is helping me gain exposure, and, prior to that, I uploaded a few extra videos for a Christmas in July sale I was running. Additionally, I am trying to be present and relevant in the comments on the various channels I watch as well as on FB and IG. Little steps add up. I will have to let you know in the future how my "blast the platform" approach works out if I decide to follow through with the idea. :-) Thanks for the guidance and encouragement and congratulations on your new baby!! Happy cuddling! ~Marci
Adding a second video a week this summer seems to have definitely increased my subscribers number much faster than once a week. But then again, my video content this summer has also been very targeted to the current situation (my channel is about teaching tips, so I focused my summer videos on online teaching tips and edtech tutorials). I’m going back to one a week soon, since this semester will have a very hectic schedule. I’m curious to see if there’s a huge drop when I change. Will try to go back to two a week as soon as possible.
Wish I came across your channel earlier. Great content. It's actually the need of the hour for teachers who have to face the challenge of stepping forward and teach online.
I have been in TH-cam for 16 months with over 100 videos. I still believe that your success here doesn’t really depends on you but rather the algorithm, period.
awesome video, Gillian! I have two channels now, one is in my own native language of Turkish and with a 11.2k subscriber base. but I'm intending to come to this one to grow it, I currently have 884 subscribers but I see good potential of making this one work too. I love watching videos like these and your content quality is superb. thanks a ton! and congrats for the new baby! I wish him/her a life full of happiness and health!
Thanks for this video...I subscribed. Once in a while I get on a roll and can post a new video every day. Then I burn out and post nothing at all for a few weeks. Like you, I also find that most of my viewers are not subscribers, but my understanding is that this is not at all unusual. It's interesting to learn how the algorithm works, but high quality content that people will want to watch is the key. No way to game that.
Is subscriber count getting less important? I read somewhere that the algorithm now works so well in suggesting videos that it doesn’t even matter if someone is subscribed and it starts to become a ‘vanity metric’.
Hey Gillian you are an inspiration. I'm here thinking about how much work I NEED to get done when it seems like you have a year worth of work ALREADY done. I mean, you record a video for August from March? This really gives me the kick I need to start taking crazy action.
Lots of love for you and your baby . Hope you two have a great time together. I always watch your videos but commenting for the first time. Just started posting again :)
Another fantastic video. Thank you for sharing. Also took your free workshop. Looking forward to using the amazing tips. Looking forward to your next video
Thanks for the video Gillian, I think it depends on the niche you're in. For example, Music and entertainment have higher traffic searches than education or more focused forms of education so there are many contributing factors to the growth of a channel. Take me as an example, when I post every day ( I know it sounds crazy and would make thin content ) my channel skyrockets on all levels which is something explainable as I promote my videos over social media platforms at the time of posting while for me relying on search traffic for a whole week is a losing game as the portion of organic traffic is not sufficient for timely growth. So until one reaches 50K subscribers and above and if the niche doesn't have high traffic volume in comparison to other niches then it is better to post every day or every other day at least to make for faster growth at the beginning.
Another great video girl! I would love to learn the secrets of your TH-cam success. You started a little bit before me and have grown significantly faster than I have. No comparison, just super curious about your secrets to success! I would love to know more about your process. How much work do you put into crafting each video, do you plan out your keywords and research them first before shooting, or do you create video concepts based around what your subscribers are asking, or a combination of both? It would be really helpful to know how you managed to publish two videos a week. What was your process like? Thanks in advance for your help! Bri
Hey Gillian, That’s a great idea. I am giving myself time to learn the craft posting once a week. Once I can consistently create good videos that rank I will try twice a week.
I've noticed that if you are very consistent with uploading, your number of subscribers steadily increases. There are some pretty good channels out there which are no longer pushed forward by the TH-cam algorithm because the owners have not posted anything in 2-3 months. Such a shame...
I've figured out how to leave my 9 to 5 behind and enjoy my work in growing my "almost" completely passive income - BUT I'm still trying to learn how to share all of this on TH-cam! I'm going to go sign up for your workshop now 😀
Hey Gillian! Thanks for breaking this down! I think I must be offering the wrong product because I have over 3000 email subscribers and some of my blog posts are getting loads of traffic (over 30,000 shares) but yet I’m not making money haha! I think I should poll my audience with your lovely tips, but not sure exactly how. You’ve been so helpful, keep rockin’ it!!
Great breakdown. My growth rate is the same abysmally low rate of just a few per WEEK as yours was in the beginning. I'll be registering for your workshop asap. Also, great work with you time machine. Dr Who is my favorite, but you are up there!
I look forward to the workshop. This is Scott commenting from my YT channel in case you are interested. Btw, such a great idea to record ahead. I'm on vacation and didn't think to do this and so now juggling trying to edit a video with taking the family on a trip. I'll be tossing the PC into the trunk to maintain consistency in uploading as I've heard that consistency is so important. I think you would agree considering you recorded this video 5 months in advance just to stay consistent and allow yourself time with your newborn. Congratulations, by the way!
Question: how long should a video be, especially if one starts? I started about a month ago and figured it's better to start with videos less than 10 minutes?!
I've been trying to keep it below 10 and making the video really entertaining cause people's attention spans are very small and the whole video needs to be really jam packed for the video to get any watch time

Hi Gillian, thank you for the video! Interesting topic :) I would love to see how changes in your posting schedule affected your views, not only subscribers. By the way, your growth might also be affected by the fact that for some of your subscribers getting 2 videos a week was just too much as they only had time to watch 1 video per week on your channel and so your CTR was probably lower because of that because your videos started competing with one another. Especially when you already established a big library of videos that new subscribers could watch.
Thank you, well communicated as always. Can you recommend a posting schedule for uploading twice weekly? My channel is a homesteading channel particularly focused on keeping a family cow. I have been uploading once weekly on Sunday at 5pm. Growing very slowing but looks like I need to go to uploading twice weekly.
It doesn’t matter. CGP Grey has 4 mil subs and posts a video once a month, sometimes once every two or three months. Mark Rober has 13.2 mil subs and posts once every two months. You don’t need to worry about the quantity game when you’re making original high quality content that people want to see and share.
Hi Gillian, my channel has about 5 themes to it, so I have to make lots of videos of each theme, it's quite time consuming and I'm very new to you tube. I found your channel very very helpful and you explain things very well. Ive subscribed to your channel.

Awesome - thanks Gillian. I’m working on my travel chanel as we are Aussies full time travelling around Australia. These videos are so helpful & one day plan to do your training (time poor at the moment) If you have time to answer, what is your recommended program for editing?
Sounds like fun! My favorite editing program is Premiere Pro. If you need an easier option then Filmora is good, and if you're on a budget then Shotcut is a great option.
So, I will be purchasing my ISBNs soon and was wondering about the bar codes that Bowker also sells. Should I get a bar code for my book as well? How necessary is it? And, if I do buy one, who puts the barcode on the book, the book cover designer or the publishing platform (KDP, B&N Press, etc...)?
I'm trying to post a new chia recipe daily for the month of August. It's a lot of work but it's really fun. After August I'll never make chia again haha
