I love my V-strom 1000 and can't wait to play around with the gearing to give it a little more bottom end for slow speed riding and to get the suspension lift installed.
I have been there on jeep trails, single track and such. Once in the winter I went down into the back country, crossed some iced flooded bottom land and came back in the afternoon. It had water on top of ice. Only one drop on a super slick section-had to slide it where I could actually get some foot traction to lift it. I dropped my front sprock to a 15t and it has made an incredible difference. It keeps it in the power band. I still need to run hwy to check BDR areas or I would go to a 14t. Even with the 15t it is a ditch digger. I adjusted my suspension with Dave Moss guide and what a difference there also since the Vee has progressive front shocks and click adjust rear that makes it easy-not super ones-but pretty adequate to work with. Great vid my friend. Stay safe out there.
I'm going to play around with the gearing and see what works best for my type of riding. Thanks for sharing your experience with the gearing. Now I have something to go on. I've played around with my suspension settings and it feels pretty good but I'm going to check out the Dave Moss guide if I can find it. Thanks and thanks for watching. 👊
Good Job Greg getting the Vstrom 1000 through the trees. new boots are very cool looking, I like the color of them. I think Suzuki blew it big time by not putting the V1000 USD forks/brakes and rear shock on the Gen3 Vstrom650's when they rolled them out in 2017. I think that would have been a great all-around bike.
Thanks man. I'm really liking my new boots. They are super comfortable. The forks make a huge difference. I can't understand why Suzuki didn't put them on the 650. The only thing I can think of is to keep the cost down. The over feel of the suspension and balance of the 1000 is better and it suits me well.
Until you ride a big bike through stuff like that it is hard to appreciate how difficult it can be. You made it look easy. I am just starting to work on trails like that.
It's definitely a little bit different than riding a dual sport but I love the challenge and it's fun. Thanks. You'll get the hang of it. Just ride safe and most importantly have fun. 👊
That's a nice OHV trail! We have Windrock and Royal Blue in the Knoxville, TN, area. ATVs and UTVs can jack up a nice trail real quick when it's wet. My worst experiences have been on rough jeep roads near the Smokies. Might be fun on a true dual sport or dirt bike but not fun on a 500+ lb adventure bike.
It used to be really fun but now it's kind of a mess. I want to get back up to the smokies and explore more of that area because the little bit we got to do while on the Smokey Mountain 1000 was fun.
It's pretty fun but the 4 wheelers have pretty much ruined it. Some of those holes are deep and that red clay which is pretty nasty and sticky. It made a mess on my bike and my boots 😭🤣
Rough stuff. Careful, might get the bike dirty. I'm still having problems upshifting in my Tech 3s. Can't get under it easily with the shifter max up. More practice might help. cool vid thx S
It did get dirty and so did my fresh new boots! I can't be having that! 🤣. I moved my shifter up 1 spline so I could get it adjusted to the right height so that might be an option for you. Thanks man 👊
Great riding through that trail. I love my TECH 5. Those TECH 7s must be awesome. I have always used Alpinestar gear. Just love fit finish and durability. Those Tech 7 look boss.
Nice riding! The track is a mess, you did well. I went +1 on the rear sprocket, not a huge difference but I can ride hills and tight trails in 2nd now which is much better.
Thanks Ian. The 4 wheelers have really destroyed the place. I'm going to try +2 on the rear and if that isn't enough I'll go -1 on the front too. I heard that 16-43 is great but I'm hoping the 17-43 will be enough for me.
@@TheBeardedGrump hopefully they won't close that trail too early from all the rain. I want to take the four wheeler there at least one more time this year. Never seen that trail that bad. Enoree ohv gets like that..
You can see in my (much worse produced) video trails that I believe were from your bike. I even remarked they were from an adventure bike. I was half expecting to see someone in need of help, the mud was so slick there. You can see in my video how slow I had to go on my little KLX300 with 50/50 tires on. Not sure how you made it with the big VSTROM - skills! th-cam.com/video/sM9TJ1pcHsA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=KpVzNM2kfYRPgyTT
It was definitely muddy. I was there last week I think. I run Motoz Tractionator Adventure tires so that helps but I've been riding for a long time too. It's a fun challenge riding my big bike through there.
I rode my v strom 1000 through stuff like that about twice. I concluded it wasn't worth it. It's just too big to be considered a fun and capable off roader in the woods. It can be done but it's way more nerve wracking work than fun.
It's fun to me because I like the challenge but the 4 wheeler guys have pretty much ruined this place so it's not as enjoyable anymore. There's not many other places like this around me anymore because of that issue.
@@TheBeardedGrump it's definitely a challenge. I'll have to watch your channel more to see what happened to those trails and how the four wheelers ruined them. I only ran across your channel recently.

Thanks Dane. I just like having fun and try my best not to ride over my head these days. I love the challenge that riding this big bike brings.

You surprise me each time with where you are taking this bike - nice to see the ABS switch being used!
I try to keep riding fun for me. It's been working great. I don't think I've turned abs back on since I installed the switch.
For a bit, I thought I was watching Ian!!
😂 This is definitely something he would ride and enjoy.
Great riding Greg! Those trails do look torn up. Good thing you have MOTOZ tires on the V1000

“This might have been a bad decision “. 😂😂😂
I think I might make those often 😂
That was tight in places
Especially with bags on the bike. It normally isn't that bad but now that the 4 wheelers have gotten ahold of it 😔
Awesome. I know that was a workout though 😅
