James Bowman is my favorite! His performance here is simply incomparable. I fell in love with the countertenor singing thanks to his performance in nisi dominus...

He was my favorite; so artistic and doesn't sound "hooty" like many countertenors. A few of them have to sing this aria down a step or so which makes it dull sounding to me.

In my first round of listening I was leaning towards Scholl, but in my second and third rounds of replays I changed my mind. Best here is Michael Chance, hands down. This counter has a unique way of transporting us back to the baroque era. Not only is his intonation and tessitura perfect for this arietta, but also I picture myself as an early to mid 17th century opera goer sitting on first row at a Venetian theatre listening to Michael Chance's spectacular rendition of this piece. This man brings us true baroque vibes. Just became his fan.

All wonderful and all favorites! Forgot Jochen Kowalski (my No.1 favorite), Carlos Mena (A very favorite) , and many other great singers. In this collection, it is hard to chose one as they are among the very best singers in the world and each one has his own style and personality that do justice to this monumental work, as Franco Fagioli recently said in a promo interview. For some reason, however, if I were to chose the ones that in a single hearing make the most impression at once, I would chose Michael Chance and James Bowman. Here is a summary:
    1. Fagioli: Rich and powerful voice. A bit too operatic for being a sacred work.
    2. Scholl: Clarity, terseness, precision. Not much chiaroscuro.
    3. Jarousky: Efforless technique. Reminds me of Emma Kirkby. Clear voice and good-taste, but in my opinion, weak and unspired for this work, which requires depth.
    4. Michael Chance: Perfection. Perfect voice and approach for this work. Bitter-sweet interpretation. He understands that this is a sacred work. Magnificent chiaroscuri. Very inspired. Poignant.
    5. James Bowman: Perfection. Though different from Chance, less emotional, more restrained, more dignified.
