Cool video thank you. my wife loves hospital ice and this is the closest thing. I knew it was expensive but I figured I would find a video here on TH-cam to show me if it's worth the money and you nailed it thank you sir
Nice review. Hubby surprised me with this for Christmas to relieve me of my weekly sonic visits. I was livid at first because of the price, but I must admit that I’m thoroughly enjoying it so far.
I have been looking for "Sonic" ice forever in an icemaker. I have been checking this model out. I have never had the ice out of this icemaker. I know that the ice is soft and great for chewing, but, it is not exactly like sonics, am I correct?? Sonic is like tiny pieces of ice that clump together in different sized pieces. Do you enjoy it "As Much As Sonic Ice"??? This is the best review I have EVER heard/watched. You sir, did not miss one thing of all the questions I had. Thank you very much. I subscribed and will purchase from this site. I look forward to seeing other reviews. You are Awesome. Shanel, I do hope I hear from you, my fellow Sonic Ice Lover!
Thanks for a great review and explanation. I was trying to figure out if mine was broken because it kept doing what you explained as recycling the ice. You are awesome! Appreciate it!
The recycling water is so smart. I was wondering about that in case the power goes out or it’s a super hot day. I really want this now. Thank you for a “to the point review”.
This guy gave such a GRAND REVIEW!!!! He knows his stuff!!!!! He was very thorough and just as excited to have one of these ice makers as I am to have one!! He made me feel a lot better about ordering one! I felt guilty for spending that kind of money, but after listening to his review and knowing that I just HAD TO HAVE ONE OF THESE BABIES, I am glad I got it!!! It's everything I had hoped for and I can assure you, I WILL be getting my money's worth! Thank you!!!! :o) Oh ... and I subscribed!!!
Bought this 2 days ago, and I completely agree with him about all the pros and cons. I like the quality of the ice, but really hate the constant noise (louder than my refrigerator). No internal refrigeration means that this machine keeps running/making ice all day long (at least the noise). But, most ice lovers seem they still like this machine.
I cut my 2 large daily drink sonic cost of 8.00 down in a hot minute with this beauty and been even faster with our four Daughters in the cars. Our machine is 5 years old and hasn’t cost one problem. Works like new. I regularly clean it. I am embarrassed to admit that I bought the counter-top ice maker with an open box deal. Good luck I guess. We see more ice makers in more locations in the future. Great product.
This is a much older version of the GE Profile Icemaker. I purchased mine , version 2.0, last September, 2020. This model was built by First Build, which GE eventually acquired when Haier purchased GE. The newer model is very similar, but is much sleeker and more contemporary in design. That big ugly button in the middle of the front of the machine has been eliminated. The unit also now comes in a black stainless choice, which is really beautiful. The new model started at $629, but I believe is now selling for $599 for the black stainless.
Thanks for the info, Nick. I compared the technical specs for both the older unit (the one that I provided a link for on Amazon) and the newer one (2.0) that you mentioned. The only difference I see is that the newer one is about nine pounds lighter. Yep, the button is gone, but I kind of like the LED circle lighting. Given that they both produce the same ice using the same method at the same frequency (and have identical warranties, etc.), I would think that it's just a matter of which one you prefer.
THANK YOU SO MUCH !! We just bought this ice maker, and I was unclear about something regarding the extra tank. I chose your video to watch .. ALL QUESTIONS ANSWERED! Subscribed to your channel now. Will check with you before another large purchase 😆😉. Sure appreciate your time!!
I have the version before it came with the side mount reservoir. We like it quite a bit. The only things I don't like about it are: 1 when the water in the reservoir runs out the pump will continue to run and makes a loud noise. It doesn't shut itself off when it's out of water, so if you keep it running over night it will make that loud noise. It's also not good for pumps to run dry. They should have designed it with a guage to shut it off and turn it on based on water level. 2 It doesn't seem to have a HOLD mode, it seems to only really have a production mode or an off mode. The white light is kind of a hold mode, but it only gets to that after running a cycle and you can't select it manually. 3 The ice bin could be designed more to keep warm air out and cool air in with a rubber gasket or something. As it is, after the machine makes the ice it can quickly melt because there's basically no insulation to keep it cold. Those are my gripes. Other than that we love it.
Thanks for the great review Mike! Just purchased using your link! Keep up the great work on TH-cam. I subscribed and am looking forward to future videos!
Unfortunately, your link to Amazon isn't working at this time. Your video was helpful. Maybe you can add another of you pulling the reservoir out and when the fan comes on so we can hear the infamous "noise" that's mentioned so often in reviews. Thanks for your review!
While thinking about buying this, I considered the price of a refrigerator that dispenses ice and water. I have a primo water dispenser and I have the cheaper ice maker but it's a pain to have to freeze the ice after. So I'm considering it pretty worth the money instead of buying a dispensing fridge and needing to have a water line made for it. Thank you for this review! Definitely buying it! Also it's currently $50 off
I think I'll get one today. Last day with Prime. Saving $100! The only feedback is I wished that you did a demo with the ice maker. Wanted to hear how loud it sounds and how quickly it goes from water in the reservoir tank to ice. I know that you said that it takes about 20 minutes, but I think you meant filling the entire box with ice. If you only need a cup, was wondering how long it will take to produce.
I been tempting to buy one because I love ice on almost everything I drink. Little pricey but if I decide to get one I’ll make sure to use your link. I got one question is the fan noise or motors in general runs 24/7 or only when pumping water and making ice? Thanks
I do have a problem with the extra tank tho.....it leaks when I turn it over to place it on the extra tank place. Could I use a silicone adhesive to prevent that. I'm not getting answers from GE as to how I get a replacement tank.
If this is running 24/7, how is your electric/energy bill? It would make more sense to bag up the extra ice you don't use, and put it in the freezer in order to save on energy cost
The point of all these types of ice makers is to make soft ice. Therefore, the ice continually melts and is recycled so it can be remade again in a manner that keeps it soft. If you took some of the ice out of the bin, then it would not recirculate and the system would require water more often. Also, when you put the ice in a bag and put it in a freezer it would harden in a way that it wouldn't be soft anymore.
How about a video on cleaning green slime out of the tubes on the back. I have run a cleaning cycle with the stuff they said to use, but it mostly deals with hard water spots...not green slime or start of bad mold. I found mine sits in the sun and that's probably not good either. I love my nugget ice but it needs to be cleaned before I use it again......I use it continually! Tank empty...fill it again and again every day.
I haven't had that problem with mine. I would try getting a small pipe brush and cleaning out the tubes by scraping the insides from the top -- then flush with a couple of clean/drain cycles. If anyone else has a suggestion, please let us know. And to Brenda....good luck.
Do you have to keep the reservoir inside the machine full of water? Mine makes an awful noise when the water runs out and the outer reservoir doesn’t seem to refill properly...
No, but you need to fill it when first starting the unit up (as described in the instructions). After that, just keeping the outer reservoir filled will replenish the interior tank. I don't know what you mean by the outer reservoir not refilling properly, since that's the one that you need to refill manually.
My son just bought one 2 weeks ago as a Christmas gift. It run perfectly and my husband loves itm And 2 days ago it just stop making ice. Do you have any solution. Thank you.
Simple things first. Is the bin closed all the way? Is a hose crimped? Is the reservoir filled and properly seated? Did something in your reservoir clog the system? Does the circular light show a pattern that you can look up in the user manual? Did you check the troubleshooting guide in the manual? And finally, did you call their toll free number and ask for help?
It’s been 4hrs and I’m at less than a lb of ice. I called and they send to ship it back great time to pack up this 50 lb ice maker and waste time at the post office. UnReal!
What?! There's no internal refrigeration! I'd be concerned w getting half-melted ice? Also, do you know if this thing uses a lot of energy with it running always?
Yep, there's no internal refrigeration - and that certainly keeps down the energy costs. The ice slowly melts and is reused. But it slowly melts and is replaced. Actually, I don't even notice it. The bin stays full. The machine specs say that it uses 2.5 amps. I'm not an electrician, but I would think that if it ran at 2.5 amps all the time (which I'm sure it doesn't), that would be the equivalent of 2-3 light bulbs.
Would you recommend this in a travel trailer? It gets hot out here in west texas, and during the summer stores run out of ice. Would it run smooth or would I need to change anything electrical wise?
It should run fine. All you need is a standard 120V outlet. Just know that it may be a tad noisy inside the trailer when it runs (the fan and motor). It's fine in our house, we hardly even notice it. We keep it in the laundry room right next to the kitchen.
When you do the first set-up (and after a cleaning), you put a little bit of water in the internal reservoir. From that point on, all you have to do is fill the external one.
Hi! I just purchased one for my wife. I find that mine gets pretty hot to the touch on the right side (if your facing the machine) i know it has to have some room to breathe, but it feels a little warmer than I would expect for an appliance. It has made 2 bins full of ice though, so im not thinking its defaulted or anything. Any opinion on this?
It works great. However....I'm disappointed that it occasionally squeaks - quite loudly. Something is going on in there. It sounds like a belt or something. I watched some TH-cam videos and took it apart, putting a bit of WD40 on a wheel in the back. It didn't solve the problem. Some guy said that it was some sort of bearings, which is harder (but do-able) to fix. HAVING SAID ALL OF THIS, I continue to use it because I love it. And so does everyone who visits our house.
I just bought one, and am kinda confused in the the front button. once it runs out of water and the bin is not full is it going to just stay on and keep telling you to add water indicated by the back-and-forth blue lights?
I am out and about now, so can't take a look. But the meaning of the lights are in the little manual that comes with it. Honestly, I never look at the light. When I pass by the machine I just glance at the reservoir. If it needs water, I fill it. For us, it's every 2-3 days.
Honestly? I haven't had any issues at all. It squeaks sometimes and the motor makes a bit of noise, but I keep it in a room just off the kitchen. The ice sure is good!
Inside? I haven't seen that. But, according to page 9 of the user manual, if the circle button (which has lights around its edges) is blue/white, then it's telling you to add more water.
True. But the engine is the same, the ice nuggets are the same, the dimensions are the same, and both use wifi and can be controlled by an app. The main differences I saw was a little bit of exterior redesign and the new "2.0" can be controlled by Alexa. I don't know about you, but I don't need to tell Alexa to turn my ice maker on or off - I always leave it on.
Best Buy also has the 2.0 version. It has an improved drip tray, uses WiFi instead of Bluetooth, more water storage, and most importantly is quieter :) Amazon only sells the v 1.0.
@@LifeintheSlowLane And how much is left over? Then you wait four hours? Thank you so much! You are awesome! I need you to come be salesperson for me. Please email me.
Yeah. I should have thought of that. It's not that it's always really loud (decibel-wise), but you can certainly hear it and it would be distracting in a small kitchen or if it was in a room where you were watching TV all the time. Since it doesn't require a water supply (because it uses a reservoir), you can pretty much put it anywhere. I keep mine in a room off the kitchen.
@@SonyaLCH You don't participate in pot luck dinners because your cats might chew up your water tubing? Is that the same as "I don't get my rugs dirty because my Christmas lights won't work"? :-)
@@rogerlopez1109 I get it. Hope she likes it as much as I do! If you decide to get it, you can order through the link I provided in the description. Have a great one, Roger!
Even if you wanted to, you can't store nugget ice in a freezer. The soft features of the ice would simply cause it to clump together and now you don't have ice, but chunks of ice bergs. Not very useful for making drinks and now your dentist is really pissed.
Thanks so much for pointing this out! I can't find it on Amazon either! For now, if you want one please find it on the Internet somewhere. But for anyone reading this, please keep trying my Amazon link first. Again, thanks for the heads-up.
What about all the nightmares on the Amazon reviews. Even after purchasing the warranty. Not being able to return it to GE doesn't want it. Amazon says to call GE. Then the replacements either don't work long months....then having to replace it again. Until you ask for your money back. To top it off they want you to pay that 47lb just back. Please tell me positive stories..
I'd say that anything you find on Amazon with 3,496 reviews and 4.5 stars is OUTSTANDING. And that's what this Ice Maker has. I would give it 4.5 to 5 stars myself.
We have had ours for almost 2 years, on hot days since we don’t haveA/C in our house, when I go to get ice I is all melted. Doesn’t keep up with our demand for ice. Sorry over priced piece of junk. It also randomly goes into cleaning mode, for no reason. Ha thank to power cycle it..
You're right! We buy Sonic ice 2 bags at a time. I did the math and this ice maker will pay for itself in no time! Thanks for the thorough review.
Where can I buy sonic ice ?
This guy is a legend!!! Kept it concise and interesting, walked through the entire situation. Amazing review! GE needs to show up with the check !!!

I got one question is the fan noise or motors in general runs 24/7 or only when pumping water and making ice? Thanks
Only when making ice. But it runs more often than you think because there's no refrigeration and the water is recycled.
Where does the left tube go right one goes to the reservoir mine is making 5 pieces of ice per hr
I do have a problem with the extra tank tho.....it leaks when I turn it over to place it on the extra tank place. Could I use a silicone adhesive to prevent that. I'm not getting answers from GE as to how I get a replacement tank.

Mine is pretty warm too, but it works great. Just make sure that the vents on BOTH sides aren't blocked.

Nope. Not rubber. But it has a small plastic drip pan on the front that's a perfect place to keep the scoop.

And thank you for replying and being so helpful. Your video is great.
@@wbciv78 I just went in and emptied 16 very full scoops into a bucket. Four scoops totally fills a Tervis tumbler (like the one in the video).
@@LifeintheSlowLane And how much is left over? Then you wait four hours? Thank you so much! You are awesome! I need you to come be salesperson for me. Please email me.
Makes me want to chew on some ice..😊
I’ve gotten 5 pieces of ice in 1 hr I won’t be chewing any ice
Does it have a filter or are you potentially consuming tap water?
No filter, so you're consuming whatever you put in the reservoir: tap, bottled, distilled, etc.
Does it use a filter? I see one being sold as a add on?
No. I think it's just the add-on. Of course, the water you add can be filtered as much as you want.
My side tank did not come with the cap. Where can I buy just the cap?
Suggest that you return it and get one that is complete.
You would have to call GE and ask about a replacement it that's all you want.
Send it back
Only thing missing from this review was a quick cut to show the noise it makes when it’s running. Otherwise great!
Got one for 🎅
My cats chewed through the water tubing. Does anyone know where I can purchase replacements?
How about this (you can cut it)? firstbuild.com/products/opal-drain-extension-kit/
This is why I don't participate in pot-luck/pitch in dinners. . .
@@SonyaLCH You don't participate in pot luck dinners because your cats might chew up your water tubing? Is that the same as "I don't get my rugs dirty because my Christmas lights won't work"? :-)
Does it still work months later.
Yep. Still working like a charm!
How long does it take to fill the bin with ice ?
It can fill from empty to full in (I think) four hours or so. Three of us use it on and off all day and it doesn't usually drop below 1/3 full.
@@LifeintheSlowLane thank you ! I'm looking to get this for my pregnant wife who cant stop eating ice lol
@@rogerlopez1109 I get it. Hope she likes it as much as I do! If you decide to get it, you can order through the link I provided in the description. Have a great one, Roger!
Great review!
How many watts does this use to run?
Specs say 120V at 2.5A. So that would be 120*2.5 = 300 watts, I believe.
@@LifeintheSlowLane ok thank you, I have 2 but I could t find how many watts.
Even if you wanted to, you can't store nugget ice in a freezer. The soft features of the ice would simply cause it to clump together and now you don't have ice, but chunks of ice bergs. Not very useful for making drinks and now your dentist is really pissed.
The price is $549 on Amazon
Yep. See my link in the description.
The link isn’t working
I thought I'd see someone eat the ice
Link no longer valid.
They took it off Amazon for a couple of days. It's back now and I've corrected the link. Thanks!
Be careful about GE products. There products don't last long ...Just saying.
