2:10 He told me at a convention he had no intention of finishing the series, because doing covers and statues paid him more for the time spent. Comic pages take him a while to do, so it made more sense to not do them anymore, for him, anyway.
@@rockon8174 i understand covers and such pay better but still.., you would think he could find time for s comic somewhere. But. He doesn’t want to make comics anymore it seems unfortunately. Sad
@@RobertNorton12013 you can totally tell Joe Mad and Scott Campbell don´t wan´t to do comics any more and it´s a total shame since they are absolutely fantastic at visual narrative. But at least J Scott puts some covers on the shelves regularly and you can still enjoy his art from time to time! On the other hand, good luck telling JoeMad to draw a cover for any comic, he doesn´t do it anymore
Nothing pissis me off more than very talented & top artist goes the "variant cover pays better" route to only leave a series unfinished and his supportive comic collectors wanting but never getting another book....
The vibe I got at the time was that backlash against art-centric comics was at an all-time high. Writers "saved" the comics industry. Internet discourse was relatively new and snobs and trolls hit this book hard. The book was deliberately designed to be toyetic and they thought this was disingenuous. I remember Campbell responding defensively. I think he just took his ball and went home. The haters ruined it for the rest of us.
Never heard of this series but if I liked Gen 13 , I'm pretty sure I would like this. The art most definitely I like. Great comicbooks review Rob thanks for sharing
Jeff had stated on his old message boards he has at least one more issue of material finished, and that was over a decade ago. Imagine how much more he has done now! This book is going to be great when it comes out, but I for one hopes he just releases the collection and does not do any more single issues, just give us a trade or oversized hardcover. This was the series Jeff did to prove his critics wrong and to shame those who said he could not complete a series in a timely manner. Well, that is kind of messed up now, but at least we will see why his work is always worth the wait.
@@rockon8174 I don't know, that would be really a slap in the face to his fans who supported him, it would be putting money over keeping his word. I can't see Jeff doing that.
The actor that J. Scott Campbell referenced as the science Teacher is Vincent Schiavelli. He was in films like "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" , "Ghost"and etc.
I had these comics but gave them away in a comic purge but you're right the art is incredible, between J. Scott Campbell and Joe Madureira I'd pick Campbell as my favorite artist the art is so lovingly detailed from unique angles to the almost cinematic feel of it, oh and at 33:03 the actor you're thinking of is Vincent Schiavelli he was in tons of movies and TV and died of lung cancer in 2005.
Super interesting - - But what's this at the 32:00 mark. Top 10 Comics? After a quick search, I see it's a universe from Alan Moore?? Art by Jerry Ordway? and more... Can't wait to go explore it.
9:30 the demographic for sales was teenagers at the time. 😑 During this era there was a lot of catering to teenagers for content. Backstreet Boys, N Sync, Britney Spears, 90210, Power Rangers, were ALL teenagers.
The way I remember things is that good artists came up with a good story concept, did a few issues and then bailed. I did read the first issue of Wildsiderz, but the concept looked underdeveloped. I mean come on, look at them. They look so distinctive their secret identities would be blown faster than that of Superman. Now if they had fully forcefield/holographic animal endoskeletons where they were completely hidden inside, that might have been cool. But these partial holograms that are see-through? On top of that, there is so much of their bodies unprotected, a gun can take them out of the fight. Why are they even called 'superheroes'? This is a first Robin-level child endangerment.
2:42 I want to say I recall hearing about a serious health issue AND a broken wrist or something.... maybe that was a different book. I don't remember.
I played the games. Joe made and those games suck he's a nobody in game art. im a concept art student, and i never hear any top designers mention him at all. plus at the end of the day he aped, the capcom character designers, and tried to pass their stuff as his. image comics after the og group was just a gradient of straight up copyright infringement or heavy handed aping. Making knock offs of the Japanese ip's, they took a real Chinese approach 😂😂😂😂
OMG, took me a few but I remember this. I really didnt like that glowy outline effect for their powers and armor.I wonder if he just stopped becasue it wasnt selling at all abd ut was orobly alot of extra work doing the overlays. I wonder if it wasnt selling and ended up being more work that he realized and was tired of it and just bailed. also, I dont care who it is, darkened pencils will never look good as opposed inked pages. It just looks dull. Michael Turner, Campbell, Madureira, NONE of them look good. Oh and you are talking about it as im writing this, lol
I asked Campbell where his hyped Spider-Man interiors were for the Leob story once online and he got very rude with me. I’ll never support this guy again.
The thing is about New Mutants and Teen Titans, they actually looked like teenagers. J Scott Campbell drawing teens in 2005 is kinda creepy, not gonna lie. 🤦🏽♂️
These came out in 2005? I wasn't paying any attention to these. I was too busy trying to rebuild my comic collection. I had zero interest in Wildsiderz
This takes me back, remember thinking this books will be like Gen13😅

There's a comic book artist named Chrissie Zullo who draws characters that look like Natalie Portman. She kinda looks like her herself too.

Yo, in that kid's room there's a big poster of Andre the Giant on his wall.
I always wondered if there was an IP conflict or connection to the WILDKRATZ catoon series w the nature bothers w had power suits w similar abilities.

I could be wrong but when Campbell says "Digital Inks, " he is drawing it straight onto a Wacom. I remember seeing some videos of him using one.
He draws them super tight in pencil then they are darkened to black in photoshop. Same way Joe Mad did his ultimates run.
