New U Turn Turntables bit.ly/3zfqd2K
I got my U-Turn Audio turntable in early 2015 and it is still going strong today. A few years ago and long after the warranty period ended I was having an issue that turned out to be with the Audio Technica cartridge. When I was talking to U-Turn on the phone they told me that even though the turntable was out of warranty they would still service it for free, I just had to pay for shipping and parts. I opted to just buy a new cartridge from them (upgraded to the OM5E) and install it myself, but that blew me away that they would not charge me for servicing if I chose to ship it to them. Great product and awesome company!
Good to see an American company producing value in turntables. Can't beat that. Well done Randy.
I've been living with a u-turn Orbit Theory/Ortofon Bronze since February and wow! I couldn't be happier with the purchase. It's great to see their very fine magnesium tone arm propagating down to more affordable models. What a fine product!
Two turntables? AND a microphone, Randy? That's where it's at.
I got a U-Turn Orbit Plus in February, have been enjoying getting into vinyl this year. I had a Rega Fono Mini A2D pre-amp that I upgraded to a Schiit Mani 2 pre-amp, and upgraded the Ortofon 2M Red cart from U-turn to an AT VM540ML. Sounds fantastic on my setup.
The other *critical* thing that a phono preamp does is apply the RIAA equalization. In order to cut the mastering disk that is used to eventually press the record - the bass is cut in half AND the treble is doubled. So, before we hear it, the bass has to be doubled and the treble has to be cut in half - the inverse of what is done to cut the master.
This is done so that the bass information doesn't take up a TON of room on the surface of the record - and the treble doesn't get worn away in many fewer plays.
TIL about RIAA equalization, thank you!
Timely video as my son gave me OK Computer on vinyl for my birthday. I said to him "you do realize we don't have a turntable" to which he replied "I was sort of hoping you could change that." And here I am now, once again, going down another audio rabbit hole. Love the look at features on this turntable. I was hoping to keep this purchase below $1k, and the U-turn fits the bill.
Tightening my belt as I watch. An incredible introduction to the rabbit hole that is vinyl collection for new and upcoming audiophiles. Thank you for your time and efforts to share this with us all. Happy Wednesday, brother. Take care and all the best.
Just make sure you get a 50 Hz synchronous motor in the UK!
I got the og orbit on Randy's recommendation about a year and a half ago. The amount I've spent on records since, oh man. But I have some pretty sweet tunes. And my son's know what LP's sound like, so I got that going for me.
@@HarriGary1 Great experience to share with your children. My son inherited all of my vinyl when I left Africa, but alas, music dosent play as big a role in his life as it did in mine, but we still share the experience. He loves my 60s and 70s rock.
Folks really loves these might be my next purchase
Thank you for the tip on the Vans orthotic sneakers! 😆
But seriously, U-Turn sounds like a smokin’ deal. Thanks for the video.
I have been wanting a U-Turn and now glad I hold off a bit. Really cool they added the new knob to the customization
I have the turntable with the preamp installed, does anyone know how to get Bluetooth to get on my Bose speaker which is wireless?
Dude my feet hurt all the time it's our age randy 😂😂 love your channel brother most of the time the reviews are spot on but ur comedy is the thing that really keeps me coming back.
Really like the theory 🔥
I was looking at these and Project for the system I'm setting up for the family room. Decided we wanted the vintage wood plinth to go with the rest of the room so I went with a Dual 1229. The built-in pre-amp would be nice but oh well.
Awesome video. Thank you
I’m still rocking the u-turn basic with their built-in preamp, it’s great! Only upgrade for me would be that theory, it’s beautiful.
Looooove the updated green and blue options! Awesome video!
The highlight reel is one of my favorite intro bumpers. That and the little robot going up through the floor or hitting the button.
I love to watch new turntable reviews, Thanks.
I love "turntable day"! All things vinyl...bring it on!! 🤘🏻🤘🏻I've learned so much already by watching your channel, & I am still learning! Great shoes btw! 😂👍🏻
Awesome! Thank you!
good turntable for anyone getting into vinyl .
I listened to this this morning while I was working and didn't see the intro till just now. That was a really cool montage. 👍
I have the old man vans! They’re great! I also have regular vans and I don’t wear them, because my feet heckin’ hurt when I wear them. Haha
I just found your channel last night have already watched several of your videos, I appreciate the honest non-shill opinions, and your channel is HANDS DOWN better than the others simply because of your dry, ADHD-ish humor. I'd still be watching your vids even if I wasn't shopping for a turntable. Not everyone understands dry, randomly placed sarcasm, but it's their loss. Don't change a thing.
Love your review and style! Txs
I am debating if i should get the fluance. rega or the U-turn, long shot is the AT-lp7 but it's looking like i am going to settle of the Fluance only because of the headshell.
Ortho Vans and nose waxing. Getting old is fun.
Do turntables not come with adjustable counterweights?
Nice Vans.
The thing is it’s an American company but they’re just assembling them with Chinese parts which it’s still an American company using American workers which that’s better than completely coming from China but everyone portrays them as made in America when they’re only assembled here with foreign and domestic parts if I’m wrong somebody can correct me but I’m pretty sure I read on their own website that they’re assembled here in the US but that doesn’t mean the parts going into them are American, that being said every upgraded option you mentioned they changed at a higher price I might add you can already get for less money from fluence.
For example I have their RT 82 I believe I paid less than $300 for it at the time it has the same cartridge the OM5 it has the flat belt that goes in a groove since day one all of their turntables do they’ve never had the belt falling off problem like u-turn does and they all come standard with the electronic speed control as well as theirs has the laser monitoring adjustment for wow and flutter that scans the speed 1000 times a minute or something like that to make sure it stays in spec as well as auto stop when it gets to the end of the record which u-turn still doesn’t have as well as the removable heads so you can easily change the cartridges whenever you want and they come out of Canada which I still prefer something coming from anywhere other than directly from China so I have no problem with supporting a Canadian company as well as an American one that’s why I chose them over U-turn because with lots of research I was finding people were having issues with their turntables and they cost more at that time than fluence and now they upgraded their turntables to basically copy fluence standard options and increase the price tremendously their turntable with the electronic control and all the other supposed upgrades it’s about $200 more than what you can get the same thing from fluence i like that it’s American company but they are still overpriced in my opinion
tl;dr
Randy, I watch you on You Tube all of the time. I'm interested in purchasing an Orbit Theory with the Ortofon 2m Bronze Cartridge. What are the pros and cons of it? I'm not one who wants to constantly change cartridges based on the genre of music and the quality and age of the album. I've done quite a bit of research on the Orbit's and I'm set on buying one. Also, what would be my 2nd best option from Orbit
I bought the U-Turn Theory with the 2m Bronze after watching yours and a couple of other reviews. Its a bit spendy but no regrets. Love the sound and build quality. Should be a lifelong TT for me.
"Keebler elves! 😂😅😊❤
You should try the Vans w/ ComfyKush insoles...
@@kraig7777 Sir, I could introduce you to a new world of comfort.
Please purchase yourself some Adidas' that have Boost foam midsoles.
It doesn't matter which pair...but you'd do best to get some with a knitted upper. They are literally like wearing socks that have pillows attached to the bottoms.
EDIT: Sneakers are my #1 hobby, btw. I've been in love w/ them since about 1988...and I've been collecting them since about 2002.
These are great turntable options. Especially the special. The theory has been at the top of my wishlist since it came out
The addition of electronic speed control is great, but the tonearm should have a removable headshell.
Why though it doesn't really help
Hahaha, yes Vans knows Gen-X. I am 47 recently started having to use orthopedic shoes not to be in intense pain from being at work.
I went with the Grado cartridge to keep everything pure 'Murican audio power, baby!
I love how simple and lights these turntables look. That colour speaks to me, mmmhhmm!
Surely something different than my grey slab of 23lb chunkus AT-LP5 😅
Can't really get these in the UK so picking up the Rega Planar 2.
I am debarking getting a gen 1 orbit or gen 2 because of the price, what are the differences between them? I am also debating getting the ATLP120 because it is fairly cheap and I need a built in pre amp so what should I get?
I was having a bad day until I watched this video. Thanks, Randy.
Ever so slightly dissapointed as I just got the “older model” in late April 😂 but they look cool!
did you shine your shoes with microphone blues?
Hi Randy... You keep getting more professional.
I try
Loved the review on Vans speakers er sneakers ~now available for baby boomers !😅
Oh yeah nice review on TT as well. Great job as usual Randy
YO RANDY….. Filter released their new album The Algorithm today.
Godspeed brother
That belt looks like a nightmare
So the belt still falls off when you stop the table?
Interesting options. I tend to gravitate to Fluance in this price range, but these look nice too.
Boy howdy, how far we've come.
I got into the HIFI world in 1976. Yeah, the widest part of the vintage HIFI rabbit hole. Because I spent so much of my career in Europe, I took full advantage of the ridiculous cheap prices of high end components in the various PX stores. On my third and last tour, I sold my mostly Pioneer system and invested in Phase Linear gear. I mean the whole shebang. Amp, Preamp, tuner....all for a third of what we would have paid in the US. I had three components not Phase Linear. My Teac A-150 tape deck, my DBX noise reduction unit (six hundred frickin dollars in 1978 money), and my Pioneer P3A fully auto turntable. Man I coveted that turntable....it was a work of art.
So in the mid 90s, someone offered me an obscene amount of money for my system and I took it. I don't regret it. It was to the point where caps were gonna need replaced and I didn't want it turning into a money pit.
But my point is, the U Turn product is simply good enough and I hope they do well. That's the lesson I've learned over the years. HIFI isn't about bragging rights to what you own or how much you paid for it. It's about how much enjoyment you can get without a second mortgage on the house. Mo money doesen't always mean mo better. And even if it does, the laws of diminished returns sets in to the point where it shouldn't even be a point.
Had the Pioneer SX Series equipment in 76, so I'm vintage too.
I had to comment, I forgot all about DBX! Brought back memories.
@@pnichols6500 I absolutely despised tape hiss. It drove me crazy and I scrimped and saved for that DBX unit. It almost completely made it go away. Thank you for even knowing what that DBX was. Most people have never even heard of it. Of course today, tape decks are pretty much dinosaurs, but I loved my Teac.
U turn vs flusnce ft85?
I'm new to this game and I'm trying to get into vinyl, I have a 5.1 system at home running a Marantz N1607 receiver and some Triangle Speakers (the Boria line) plus a small sub from Martin Logan. I'm told my receiver doesn't have the capability to run vinyl unless I use some type of pre Amp or phono something or the other) so I'm wondering if anyone here can recommend one of these vinyl players and tell me what it is that I need to be able to listen to it on my system. Thanks in advance.
if your receiver doesn't have a phono preamp in it then you can get a turntable with an included preamp.
If your receiver has an analog input, purchase a external phono preamp like the budget IFI zen or Schii phono and connect that to the Analog input. Then connect the turntable to the phono preamp.
If the turntable has a built-in phono preamp, just connect that straight to your analog input on your receiver.
@felicianogodoy2627 thanks so much for your response. I used to live in MA so I wanna support this U-turn company. I wanna give one of these a try.
@@Paul-tw3yi Clean and handle your records properly ( lots of TH-cam videos) and enjoy the music!
Gen X...getting old and broken now. I remember when we were the new hotness! 😀 Love the vinyl coverage and the Fluance RL 85 that I bought recently to get back into analog audio.
Ive got a 40+ year old Harman Kardon T40 turntable and the belt NEVER slips off - because its UNDER the platter WHERE IT BELONGS, and the electronic speed control is a knob on the front of turntable WHERE IT BELONGS - for $549+ you'd think U-turn could manage this -- MUCH CHEAPER TURNTABLES DO. My Harman Kardon also has a removable headshell LIKE THE Uturn SHOULD HAVE AS WELL in its price range - cheaper turntables do, it also has its own preamp that sounds pretty good considering its age though I do run a DJPreII preamp.
appreciate your feedback. lot of tables from pro-ject and rega don't have removable head shells because of the straight tone arm. I'm glad that you have a table you love. I think it's a performance consideration to go with a straight tonearm. either way there are options out there and I'm glad that we have them
FYI.....you can put an OM 20 stylus on that cartridge or LP GEAR equivalent
Hi Randy , great video I like the groove on the platter is cool why did pro-ject not do this to there low end decks like primary e , looks great sound great with om5 . Regards mark
We need a uk supplier
I wish there was a trade option. Mine skips on all records. New, old, doesn’t matter. Since day 1.
I don't get the resurgence of vinyl.
I like the varied intros.
Wish they hadn't switched the Kelly green to aqua. looks tight though.
I agree. I like this green but the other green had more of a vintage look.
Ive heard you mention vinyl at walmart a few times. Just wondering do they still censor the recordings they sell. I understand you have young children at home and i get why you would prefer a cleaned up version, but being a full grown 71 yr old do i need to shop elsewhere to get the non P.G. rated materials? I just got my fluance recently so u-turns not in my future but thanks for the review.
The uturn website says it has a AT cartridge not Ortofon?
I hate the S*** I bought over the Orbit for various reasons (external belt concerned me and I didn't want to order and BB had the S*** on the shelf). So i'm back jonesing for an Orbit if there isn't a way to polish the S*** turd. Just turned 65 and want to play my old vinyl (with great audio) in my retirement (maybe next year!). Wonder if the Van's come in size 15?
You don't need to Boost it twice..! that's not how it works with a phono stage, a phono stage will give you line level out voltage it doesn't need to be boosted again. And no it wouldn't be grounded through the positive it's grounded through the negative of the positive
I’m indecisive of this or the project debut carbon evo. Help!!
Orbit Plus. I've owned both. You don't pay a retailer when you buy a U-Turn.
And here I am now searching through orthopedic Vans!! 😂😂
sad we cant get them in europe
Just get a Pro-Ject or a Rega and you will be fine ^^
So are these turntables manual or automatic?
Manual.
This is Proreck, how can we have a cooperation?
Is the Head shell swappable?
No
All good, but another one thats usa only...
No eu power option tho
I would like to try vinyl, but is there away to add only the songs that you like to a vinyl?
They're called "records", not "vinyls", and no, you cannot make a mix record. You must listen to what's already on one.
I have a UTurn turntable … they are fantastic
2 Turntables and a Microphone!!! 😂
Does ScrewTube show where I'm watching you?😉
Vinyl old hat, not good sound, Snap, Crackle and Pop
Clean your records.
wish they i mean all brands would just use a bit better cart on their entry turntables ,sorry to disagree ..
Orthopedics are snake oil
Sorry, I know you made a life reviewing modern equipment, but I have to say it: modern turntables are a scam, pure and simple. $250 for a barebones turntable without speed adjustment and fixed headshell? $549 for one WITH speed adjustment? And no autoreturn ever? All this turntables would've been bottom of the barrel 30 years ago and are vastly overpriced now.
Inflation explains the current pricing. If you adjusted those 80's prices to 2023, they'd compare.
Speed adjustment and auto return are features found on budget, direct-drive turntables. And 30 years ago, those turntables were mostly garbage.
Stop being cute! It's not funny!
Awesome video, Randy!
